Deceitful buyer damaged an item and Mercari is siding with them.

I had a high priced set of rare books in my Mercari store.

A buyer purchased the set and I had already packaged and dropped it off before they suddenly requested a refund. I messaged them and told them I had already dropped the package off and I wasn’t able to stop the shipment.

The buyer then goes “well if I don’t like it can I return it?” And I said I don’t accept returns as I’m moving right now.

I then got concerned and contacted Mercari saying I was concerned the buyer was going to be deceitful to force a return and maybe damage my book.

Mercari assured they’d protect me. But they didn’t and the buyer is claiming a cut is on the book and wanting a return which Mercari approved without giving me an opportunity to show proof this wasn’t the case. I took pictures of the books the day I shipped (I always do for this reason) and the cut isn’t there. This is clearly from a box cutter. But Mercari will not even review the images and keep telling me that my listing was misleading because my listing pictures didn’t have the cut. And I’m like yeah because it wasn’t there.

And I can’t even get them to LOOK at the pictures I’ve posted to the help chat multiple times.

Is there a chance I’ll get a resolution to this or am I receiving a permanently damaged book set back and no money in sight to make up for it?

I’m devastated because before this the books were worth $300 and now I probably can’t sell them them for more then $50 because of the damage the buyer cost that Mercari is insisting I did even though the damage isn’t there in any of my pictures previous to shipping.

If you used to work for life.church or volunteered and have a story to share there’s still a local reporter collecting stories.
