3 day power outage???

We lost power on Friday evening due to the storm and PSEG is saying that they don’t expect service to be restored until Monday evening. Do we have any recourse? Compensation? It has been sweltering here so imagine everything in the fridge and freezers will have to be thrown out. We will also have to eat out over the next 2 days.

I really don’t need another bag, and yet … (please help me think through this dilemma)

My family is heading to Italy for 17 days this summer. We will be staying in 5 different hotels and traveling mostly by car (though we do have 1 internal flight booked as well). I’m planning on bringing a large rolling suitcase and my trusty Tom Bihn Synik 22 for the plane. However, I’m struggling with what to do for a day bag. Normally I’d just unpack the Synik and carry that, but with 4 “transfers” it would be nice to not have to do that, especially because I’ll probably need a day back for the transfer day.

I thought about picking up another Osprey Daylite Plus (my other one lives at Disney World year-round) and throwing it in my suitcase for the transatlantic flights. I could also just grab a lightweight gym bag that we already have at home and use that as the “catch all,” but we’re already somewhat space constrained in the car and on the plane. I’d probably want to leave behind my laptop and cord bag at the hotel, along with whatever random detritus gets picked up along the way.

My "day bag" will have a water bottle, our passports, wallet, phone, glasses, sunglasses, shawl for going into churches on occasion, sunscreen, and whatever random stuff I end up having to carry (the joys of being “Mom”). I probably don’t *need* all the space in the Synik but I’m used to carrying it and it’s pretty comfortable for me. The Daylite Plus would also work just fine for a day bag. I don’t want to use an ultralight backpack, as I think a bit of structure makes for a more pleasant “carry” experience, especially for so many days.

Clearly I’m overthinking this.

I think my watch has gone crazy

I have a Venu 4. It was fantastic for a few months, but one time I accidentally recorded a treadmill run as an outdoor run, so the stats were completely off. Ever since then my treadmill stats have been a disaster. e.g. today I ran 4.5 miles, yet my watch logged more than 8. Now I’d love to pretend that I’m a 5:30 miler, but I don’t think I can even sprint that fast.

I have run/calibrated maybe a dozen 4-6 mile treadmill runs since then yet nothing is changing. My outdoor runs are nowhere near that pace. Finally today I reset my treadmill statistics to factory default, but even that didn’t seem to help. What else can I do?

First Time in Quebec - Help Us Stay Busy!

We have a bit of an itinerary sketched out but it feels….lacking….

Knowing myself I like to keep moving. I’m not a “sit around and contemplate life” kind of person. I also will think nothing of putting in 30k steps in a day on vacation. Actually I’d think something is wrong if I didn’t.

With all that in mind, what are we missing from our itinerary:

Monday: Flight lands at lunchtime, staying at the Chateau Frontenac

Wander around Dufferin Terrace, Quartier Petit-Champlain, Place Royale, Old Port. Walk Promenade des Gouverneurs and the ramparts.

Tuesday: rent a car to do the falls and Île d’Orléans. If bored continue driving along the river.

Wednesday (Canada Day): Citadel, Joan of Arc Garden, Plains of Abraham, Promenade Samuel-De Champlain, Parc du Bois-de-Coulonge.

Thursday: Morrin Centre, Rue Saint-Jean & Épicerie J.A. Moisan, fly home. [this day in particular feels way too short]

Thank you redditors for helping to make our trip even better!

October Weekend Trips from Munich - Looking for Places I Haven’t Considered Yet

I'll be in Munich for work for several weeks in October and am looking for weekend destinations that might not be on my radar.

Constraints:

  • Depart Munich Friday afternoon/evening
  • Return Sunday evening
  • Prefer nonstop flights
  • I don't drive in Europe, so destinations need to be accessible by public transit
  • Budget isn't a constraint; maximizing a short weekend is more important
  • Traveling solo

What I'm looking for:

  • Nature, coastline, lakes, mountains, national parks, scenic towns, etc.
  • A mix of outdoor time and good food/culture is ideal
  • Less interested in spending an entire weekend in another major city, as I've already done a lot of city-focused travel

Places I've already visited on these weekends:

  • England (extensively), Edinburgh
  • Paris
  • Amsterdam
  • Porto, Lisbon
  • Madrid, Seville, Barcelona
  • Much of southern Germany
  • Zurich, Basel, Interlaken
  • Rome, Florence, Venice, Lake Garda, Lake Como, Sardinia, Sicily, Naples
  • Dubrovnik and islands, Zagreb and the lakes
  • Ljubljana, Lake Bled

Suggestions I've received most often are Prague and Malta. Prague is certainly possible, but at the moment I'm leaning toward somewhere with more access to nature and green space. Malta also comes up frequently, but I'm not convinced it's the right fit.

A few places I've considered:

  • Nice or the French Riviera
  • Marseille and the Calanques
  • Dresden combined with Saxon Switzerland
  • Somewhere in Greece (although my husband is lobbying to save Greece for a future family trip)
  • Istanbul - I’m definitely interested but flights are tricky
  • Split - but with 2 recent Croatia trips I thought I should try somewhere new.

Given the October timing, what destinations would you suggest that fit these constraints and aren't among the most obvious Munich weekend trips? I have spent a lot of time looking already (including on Google Flights) without a lot of success, but perhaps there is somewhere I haven’t considered/isn’t on my radar yet.

How do you get through this process?

My son is interested in the military. He has a lot going for him but the process is uber-competitive and his grades/scores definitely aren’t perfect. Worse, when I hear some of his friends talk about their grades/scores I wonder if he’ll get in anywhere! We’re struggling enough to get him to even consider military-adjacent options, and two of the top kids in his school are going to apply to the only fully civilian school he’s interested in (even though they aren’t even interested) “just because they can." It’s going to be a long 10 months!

How to make the zippers quieter

I had attached paracord to my Techonaut 30, but on my most recent trip I had to take my husband’s 45 instead. I had forgotten just how ridiculously loud TB backpacks can be. I don’t want to remove the metal pulls, but is there anything else that can be done to make the zippers not so loud? The solution I have on my bag using the official pull cords just doesn’t work that well, so I’m hoping for better options.
