3 day power outage???

We lost power on Friday evening due to the storm and PSEG is saying that they don’t expect service to be restored until Monday evening. Do we have any recourse? Compensation? It has been sweltering here so imagine everything in the fridge and freezers will have to be thrown out. We will also have to eat out over the next 2 days.

Cape Cod family trying to fall in love with the Jersey Shore—where should we look?

Looking for some advice from people who really know the Jersey Shore.

I grew up spending every summer on Cape Cod, and some of my best childhood memories are from those trips. Now my husband and I live in South Orange, NJ with our 2- and 4-year-old daughters, and we’d love to buy a vacation home where they can build those same kinds of memories.

The problem is that Cape Cod just feels too far for frequent weekend trips. We’re thinking the Jersey Shore makes a lot more sense, but I’m struggling to figure out where to even start.

A few questions:
Which shore towns are the most charming and family-friendly? We’re not looking for nightlife—we’d rather have walkable downtowns, ice cream, playgrounds, good beaches, and a true “summer town” feel.

Looking on Zillow, it seems like even $1M only buys a pretty underwhelming 2-bedroom condo in many places. Is that just the reality now, or are there towns where your money goes a little further?

Are there any towns that feel greener? A lot of what I’ve seen looks very built-up, with little green space besides the beach itself.

How concerned should I be about flooding and long-term climate risk after Sandy? Is that something buyers just accept, or is it a legitimate reason to think twice before investing?

We’re hoping to buy within the next year or two so we can start making summer traditions while the kids are still little. I’m also definitely an ocean person, so lakes don’t really scratch the same itch for me.

If you were in our shoes—living about an hour from the Shore with a budget around $1M—where would you be looking, and why?

Power outage

We are in South Orange and just lost half our power to something that exploded in the backyards. Of course both our refrigerators and our ac and minisplit are on that line, so we're screwed. And to top it all off, our main AC broke a couple of days ago and was only fixed hours prior to this. Our infrastructure is like a third world country - it has become routine for our power to go out. Our biggest mistake was not getting a generator a few months (or years) ago. We have a dog and a cat - I dont even know what to do. Advice? Anyone else dealing with this?

World Cup Final Block/Watch Party on...

There is a discussion item on the agenda for the Monday night (7/7) Township Committee meeting: "World Cup Final Match - July 19th @ 3pm - Block/Watch Party on Newark Way"

This means it's a proposal, not necessarily a real thing.

World Cup match last night

Shoutout to the town organizers who put everything together. That was an incredible experience! So many people showed up to watch a game that started at 10pm on a weeknight. It was a great time and felt like the whole town showed up.

Elitist Coffee Closed?

We live nearby and noticed Elitist has “Available for rent” signs on their windows. Such a bummer to lose a local shop, but understandable knowing that the Able Baker is opening down the street and the new Orange House Cafe is getting a ton of buzz…

Sidewalk safety conditions and overgrowth

I need to be a grouch for 2 minutes. I’ve been living in Maplewood for 3.5 years. While I’ve appreciated living here, the one thing that I’ve developed a lower tolerance for is how poorly the sidewalks and overgrowth of trees, grass, and bushes are maintained all throughout the town. I know the sidewalks next to private property are supposed to be maintained by the owner, but even public spaces are in awful condition.

The sidewalks leading up to the train station are broken and uneven. The sidewalks where it narrows towards the bridge on Baker are completely unusable for strollers. You basically have to walk on the street for any part of these areas to be comfortable. The pavement in Memorial park is all jacked up. It’s borderline dangerous.

There are trees along Baker near the library that are so low you have to duck under

There are homeowners who haven’t touched their damaged sidewalks in years, which the town is supposed to proactively address.

We go through hell to pay property taxes, but our town neglects these basic safety and maintenance issues.

I hate to be “that person” but these sidewalks and the general maintenance of the town need to be fixed. If i report these areas, will anything actually get done?

Thanks for reading my rant if you’ve made it this far
