House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) is visiting New Jersey today amid renewed scrutiny toward Delaney Hall, the immigrant detention facility in Newark.

Jeffries will hold a roundtable discussion with “former Delaney Hall detainees and family members of individuals killed while in ICE custody,” according to a joint release from his office and Mejia’s. It will be followed by what they described as a “press availability on inhumane ICE detention at Delaney Hall.”

Democrats have been calling for the closure of the facility, which is run by the private prison company GEO Group, since it reopened last year. Last week, New Jersey announced a civil rights investigation into Delaney Hall after a Salvadoran man being detained there died while experiencing a medical emergency.

Jeffries has been an outspoken critic of Delaney Hall. If Democrats regain control in either chamber of Congress next session, they plan to investigate and pursue repercussions for the Trump administration and private companies running the facility, Gothamist reported Monday.

The Department of Homeland Security has repeatedly pushed back against Democrats’ assertions that the facility is not providing adequate living conditions to detainees.

Republican Congressmember Max Miller of Ohio is facing allegations of domestic abuse as he runs for reelection. Miller's ex-wife Emily Moreno, daughter of Ohio Republican Senator Bernie Moreno, claims that Miller burned her by throwing hot water at her, held a gun to her head and fractured their 2-year-old daughter's collarbone. Miller is also accused of abuse by former Trump White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham, who was in a relationship with Miller prior to his marriage to Moreno.

Just saw this on my Facebook and wanted to give a quick note from my side as a Gate Agent.

So ICE has been making arrests at check-in counters and arrival gates in a growing number of airports (reports say at least 15). They’re targeting foreign nationals who have overstayed visas, including some people married to U.S. citizens and others with pending applications, it’s not just people with final removal orders anymore.

TSA’s Secure Flight data (the name/DOB/gender/photo info airlines send when a ticket is booked) is being used to help identify them. Both agencies are under DHS, so unfortunately data-sharing is legal.

Just so you know, the Airline and gate agents are not the ones doing these stops. This is federal immigration enforcement. We still handle boarding, bags, and passenger care the same way we always have.

Caution for Travelers ‼️
If someone has an expired visa, pending status, or is in any kind of immigration process, domestic flying is higher risk right now than it was even a few months ago. The current DHS message is basically “the only reason you should be flying is to leave the country.”

Practical Aviation Amiga Advice: Double-check every document before you get to the airport, and if there’s any uncertainty about immigration status, talk to an immigration attorney before travel day. Once you’re at the gate or airside, options get very limited very fast.
