I’m Kristi Burke, running for Congress in TN-01. My current rep, Diana Harshbarger, had police remove me from a town hall for asking a question, then canceled future town halls. Now I am running to take her seat. AMA!

Hey, y’all! I’m Kristi Burke, Democratic nominee for Congress in Tennessee's 1st Congressional District.

On February 28, 2025, I attended a public town hall hosted by my representative, Republican Diana Harshbarger.

I went as a concerned neighbor without health insurance to ask why she happily voted for legislation that threatened rural hospitals (WJHL news article) and stripped Medicaid coverage from millions of people (blog post analysis).

She refused to answer, lied to other attendees, made promises she did not keep about preserving benefits, and had police officers remove me from the building when I wouldn’t sit down and let her keep lying to us.

You can watch the video of that moment on YouTube.

Immediately after that incident, Rep. Harshbarger stopped holding public town halls and shut down her mobile office hours. When elected officials hide from the people they serve, democracy breaks down.

That's why I decided to run for Congress and take her seat.

East Tennessee has been kept under a 145-year Republican chokehold, but people across our 12 counties are tired of being ignored.

My opponent failed to disclose millions in stock trades (Business Insider article) and used her political leverage to secure a presidential pardon for her husband (Associated Press article) after he pled guilty to pharmaceutical fraud (DOJ news release).

While she protects corrupt insiders, our neighbors face closed hospitals, skyrocketing costs, and predatory healthcare monopolies like Ballad Health (Virginia Mercury news article).

I am a muralist and grassroots activist running a campaign funded entirely by regular working people. I take zero corporate PAC money and staunchly oppose AIPAC and adjacent organizations that prop up Israel amidst its ongoing genocide of Palestinians.

In our primary election, we mobilized the second-highest number of Democratic voters in our district's history, coming within 1,300 ballots of an all-time surge set back in 2006.

I am running to deliver universal healthcare, fully funded public education, and a fair tax system that holds billionaires and corporations accountable.

Following our primary victory, I publicly challenged Diana Harshbarger to stand on a stage and debate me. You can watch my primary victory speech on YouTube.

Who in his right mind would think this is appropriate?

Technically, that’s not a campaign sign, but really it’s a campaign sign. Effler’s name is in roughly 30” high letters! You can read the sign from 1/4 mile away!

Why would somebody do this? Mammoth ego? Micro peen? Terribly bad judgment? All of the above?

Effler attended the University of Memphis law school, graduating in 1999. The school was unranked that year, officially lumped with other schools in a category called Tier 3. Since 1999 the Tier 3 designation has been dropped for an actual ranking, and the school is currently ranked 140th out of 196 schools. Clearly he didn’t walk away from the school with an understanding of how to spend taxpayer’s money wisely.

Frustrated by the lack of accountability

Recently, Marsha Blackburn posted that she wants, "Tennessee to be the number one Christian conservative state in the nation." This is a core message of her campaign. However, no mainstream media or any other figures that can impose accountability on Blackburn have bothered to point out that this mission of her campaign is directly in violation of the Tennessee Constitution, which provides:

Section 3. That all men have a natural and indefeasible right to worship Almighty God according to the dictates of their own conscience; that no man can of right be compelled to attend, erect, or support any place of worship, or to maintain any minister against his consent; that no human authority can, in any case whatever, control or interfere with the rights of conscience; and that no preference shall ever be given, by law, to any religious establishment or mode of worship.

Blackburn's promise to make the state a Christian state directly violates the clauses that no person can be compelled to maintain any minister against their consent (if the state becomes a religious institution, then it would be forcing our tax dollars to support that ministry), and that no preference shall be given to any religious establishment.

It is so frustrating that laws do not apply to extremist Christians. There are millions of people in this state that are not Christians, or are Christians that actually follow the teachings of Jesus (rather than Blackburn's brand of apostate Christianity), who do not want this, but are silenced because there are no mechanisms for accountability when we have mob rule by extremists.

Compounding the unconstitutional nature of Blackburn's policies, enacting them will embroil the state in costly lawsuits, and distract from policies that could be designed to help the public.

People's Hearing on Corporate Greed · Tennessee For All

Want to join me for this Tennessee For All event?

TN4All presents the People’s Hearing on Corporate Greed: Revealing how corporations get out of paying their taxes. Multiple studies and reports have shown that more than 60% of corporations filing in TN are paying ZERO in the state's corporate income tax, while working people struggle to get by. In spite of that, the TN legislature has passed back to back multi-billion tax giveaways to big corporations, but refused to eliminate the tax on groceries.

Join us on September 16th to hear from a corporate tax avoidance expert on how we close corporate tax loopholes and provide real relief for working families by ending the grocery tax. Rep. Aftyn Behn and Sen. Charlane Oliver will lead a conversation with experts on the tactics corporations use to skip out on their responsibility to fund the services they rely on for their profits and that all of our communities need.

Tennesseans from around the state will talk about how the regressive sales and grocery taxes make life harder for families while big corporations get a free ride.

Join us to learn how we can make Tennessee a place that works for everyone, not just a wealthy few.

All of us...Basic Rights

Dear Elected Official:

I am writing to express my strong opposition to any action that unnecessarily reduces polling locations or otherwise makes it more difficult for eligible citizens to exercise their right to vote.

The right to vote is fundamental to our representative government. Government officials should work to ensure that voting is free, fair, accessible, and reasonably convenient for every eligible citizen, regardless of political affiliation.

Any decision to close or reduce polling locations should be based on legitimate administrative needs and should not have the purpose or effect of discouraging lawful participation. Decisions about access to the ballot must never be driven by fear of an election result or by an attempt to gain a political advantage.

If you vote for measures that unnecessarily restrict access to voting or reduce polling locations, please understand that citizens have the same right to organize peacefully and lawfully in response. I, along with others who share these concerns, am prepared to:

Contribute our own hard-earned money to support lawful civic and electoral efforts.

Walk our neighborhoods and speak directly with fellow citizens.

Attend public meetings and make our concerns part of the public record.

Organize peaceful marches and demonstrations.

Create signs and distribute information.

Host community meetings to educate voters about the actions of their elected officials.

Encourage citizens to register, vote, and hold their representatives accountable at the ballot box.

This is not a partisan issue. Whether an official is Republican, Democrat, or belongs to any other party, the principle is the same.

We, the people, will vigorously defend our right to vote. We will oppose efforts that improperly restrict that right, and we will use the lawful democratic process to hold elected officials accountable for their decisions.

I respectfully ask you to protect voting access, preserve adequate polling locations, and ensure that every eligible citizen has a fair and practical opportunity to cast a ballot.

Respectfully,

Mark Clark

Citizen of Texas for 76 years

Resident of Tarrant County Precinct 1

Is Kane from WWE going to become your next US Senator?

I don't really know much about politics, but someone I know told me that Kane from WWE is going to be appointed to become your next US Senator. Is this true? That would be insane.

Mass ID checks and pat-downs at Club Legend last night (6232 Knight Arnold Rd)

Last night, Aug 8th, the Memphis Safe Task Force locked down Club Legend. They trapped everyone inside, checked every person's ID, and conducted widespread searches/stop-and-frisks on a crowd of Black patrons just trying to have fun.

RFK Jr.'s anti-vaccine agenda shouldn't force states to weaken protections that keep kids health.

With today’s executive order, Washington is pushing an anti-vaccine agenda that could weaken protections for children and communities. Tennessee doesn’t have to follow that lead.

Contact your lawmakers today and tell them to stand firm: protect strong childhood vaccine policies, preserve access to lifesaving vaccines, and keep preventable diseases out of Tennessee's schools and communities.

Anti-Marsha Vote

So I have a legit thought. More republicans voted for Rose or Fritts than voted for Marsha Blackburn. If all those republicans who oppose her voted for Jerri Green instead then we could block her from the governors mansion.

And before Republicans say “I’d never vote blue” hear me out- TN is deep red, no matter what. So I’m not asking you to not vote red, what I’m saying is with a Republican supermajority in the state house and senate, a one time blue vote for a democratic governor isn’t all that bad. She wouldn’t be able to get much if anything accomplished and passed, but it would give us a chance to show the rest of the nation that we no longer want Marsha Blackburn representing us.

So I’m encouraging all republicans who voted rose or Fritts to please check out Green, even if you have to hold your nose and cross your toes please consider voting for her so we don’t have to endure 4-8 years of Blackburn rule.

Could we not find better Republicans in this state?

Of all the Republicans in this state, how were the three it came down to for governor: a historically HATED senator who will probably start sending our tax money to Israel, a pedophile, and a guy who wants to ban birth control and religions he doesn't like? Could we not find one mother fucker who was at least normal? Was there not a mayor, state senator, or hell even just a guy who owns an HVAC company?
