Has anyone actually gone to Mexico for orthognathic (jaw) surgery instead of doing it locally?

This sub is mostly people going through it locally with a surgeon + orthodontist team they see for months before and after, which makes sense given how involved the recovery is. But I've seen jaw surgery listed at a fraction of the US price at a few clinics in Mexico and can't tell if that's a legitimate option or just not realistic given how much follow-up this procedure needs.

For something this invasive — wired/banded jaw, months of recovery, coordination with your orthodontist the whole way — how would trusting a surgeon abroad even work? If anyone has actually done it: how did you handle the ongoing care piece specifically, not just picking the surgeon for the operation itself? And if you looked into it and decided it wasn't worth the risk, what was the dealbreaker?

Anyone go to Mexico for their hair transplant instead of staying local?

Most of what I see is about Turkey, has anyone actually compared that to Mexico?

Seeing a lot of before/afters from clinics in Mexico at a fraction of US/Canada pricing and trying to figure out how much of that is real vs. risky. For those who've actually gone through with it: what made you trust the specific clinic/surgeon you picked? Reviews, certifications, a consult call, seeing other patients' results in person?

Also curious about recovery — did you stay locally to recover before flying home, or was that not necessary for what you had done?

Would you get a medical procedure done in another country to save thousands of dollars?

Not asking hypothetically — genuinely trying to figure out if this is something normal people actually do or if it's riskier than it sounds. I keep hearing about people going to Mexico for dental work, surgery, even weight-loss procedures for a fraction of the US price.

If you've done this (anywhere, not just Mexico): what made you actually trust it enough to go through with it? And if you looked into it and decided against it, what changed your mind?

Canadians who've gone to Mexico for medical care — how did you decide where to go?

Saw that piece about medical tourism to Mexico growing among BC residents and it made me realize I don't actually know anyone who's talked through the decision process, just the "wait times here are brutal" part.

If you've actually done it: what made you trust the place you picked? Did you go through an agency/platform, a personal recommendation, or find it yourself? Anything that almost made you back out?

Anyone traveled to Mexico specifically for a medical or dental procedure?

Thinking about combining a trip with some dental work / cosmetic surgery since it's apparently common along the border and way cheaper. A bit nervous about doing it solo though — vetting a clinic from another country feels different than picking a hotel.

If you've done this: how did you actually decide the place was legit before you got there? Did you go alone, and did that change how you approached it? What would you tell someone who's on the fence?
