Wicked Tuna is educational

I like reality TV shows that are educational. And as I progress through the seasons of Wicked Tuna, one common theme is apparent. Most of the teams struggle to make ends meet. For most, their overhead costs kill them. The boats are too expensive, the maintenance is costly, and gasoline matters. This is an industry that contributes to food production. It isn't as profitable as it used to be. It is something that should concern Americans into the future.

I kind of wonder about the Green Line, and whether that actually goes against (is a loophole to) the current tuna fishing restrictions. After all, they have several hooks on essentially the same line. And in recent years tuna has been restricted to one fish pet day.

Give the Oregon State Public Relations team a raise

Regardless of how the new season roll outs. The one thing I've noticed is how proactive Oregon State has been with respect to any media releases of information.

I have every confidence that this upcoming 2026 CFB season will meet or exceed the expectations of most accordingly.

In the most terrifying location yet...

I hate it when the narrator comes on and says this at the beginning of each episode, every season. It's rarely truthful these days. Just adding drama to the mix. Drum roll please.

As I am watching the seasons again, often out of order, I realize this.

Which location do you think was the most challenging to contestants?

Season 11 was better than expected.

I was pleasantly surprised after finishing streaming Season 11. Yes, I know it's old, but I am catching up and trying to watch episodes in order.

There were three very worthy contestants (no spoiler), all of whom were worthy of winning. I really felt for them, particularly with dealing with all the looting of their food caches by predators. They were very tolerant of the pine martens, a protected species they couldn't hunt/kill.

That alone would have driven me nuts!

I'm Not Tapping Out - I'd Rather Die

I've heard this quote so many times at the beginning, from contestant after contestant, but then reality sets in. I'm only up to Season 11 so far, but feels like there have about a dozen contestants that said this same phrase at the beginning - and most were amongst the first half to tap out in their season.

The commitment just wasn't there - just thoughts of the prize money and how they were going to use it. In fact, an argument might be made that the eventual winners were amongst those who had less specific ways they would use the prize money. More long term on how they would spend it.

Season 10 realization about Lee

Figured out what I somewhat suspected. Lee DeWilde a contestant from Alone TV Season 10, a bush pilot of Athabaskan heritage, is an older brother of a longtime cast member from Life Below Zero - Ricko DeWilde.

The fact that both are from Huslia, came from a large family of 13 or 14 siblings, it was all too much to be a coincidence. We didn't learn much about Lee's family life on the show, save that he was a Alaskan pilot from Huslia, a town with only one pilot, and he owned a small plane. Ricko, on the other hand, shared he had 13 siblings and was the third youngest. You also get to meet his children if you watch Life Below Zero. He teaches them sustenance living, how to hunt and fish from an early age.

Open-mindedness about Holidays - Juneteenth

I decided to write this post after searching for Juneteenth on Reddit and finding several negative posts. Yes, JUNETEENTH is upon us, and it is one of the newer holidays. But I think it's a day worth noting...particularly since I teach at Austin Community College, an institution that recognized it by closing. Also, we're in Texas, and history of the day dates back to June 19, 1865 in Galveston (TX).

First, let me say we have more holidays than ever; and designated national days for just about everything. June happens to be both National Carribbean American Heritage Month AND National Pride Month. Does this conflict mean we should not celebrate one over the other?

I think there's room for both. Just like there's room to celebrate Juneteenth as a holiday. I don't think it's racist to celebrate a holiday that is not racially or ethnically inclusive. I'm half Japanese myself and although I'm not thrilled about, I understand why there is a Pearl Harbor day. Should I be upset about St. Patrick's Day because I'm not Irish, or because I get pinched for forgetting to wear green?

I think not. I also miss the good old days when people would go out trick or treating on Halloween. Or a time when 9/11 was just another day.

But life changes and we need to appreciate what we have (once in a while). What do you think?

Happy Juneteenth!

HEB Hot Deli and Sushiya leftover policy

I am wondering why HEB and Sushiya doesn't have policy to mark down their fresh food items rather than see them eventually thrown away?

At most other places I used to shop at, they would always mark down the leftovers and items that had been out a while - usually around 7 pm. And usually a half off discount. Be a single adult male, I loved seeing that and always took advantage of seeing something at discount not go to waste.

Edit: Haven't heard a single reply on Sushiya yet. My impression is they just finish stocking the shelves early and leave by 5pm.

How Good is True Texas BBQ?

I ask because the two HEB stores closest to me don't have one, but I like BBQ. I also know that HEB makes good brisket, based on what they share with the public during the Thanksgiving Feast. Is that catered by True Texas BBQ?

What I really can't understand is why HEB would sell scented candles marketed under True Texas BBQ? But somehow not surprised, as I had never seen bacon flavored ice cream until I came to the South.

Searching in Austin - Best BBQ?

Anybody have any good suggestions for BBQ in Austin? I like it spicy, have relocated to Austin, and looking some good ribs or brisket.

Was somewhat surprised the other day that Jet's Pizza BBQ Chicken was a lot better than I expected. I thought I'd like the meatlovers squarepan more for sure, but wasn't the case.

Eagerly Awaiting new PAC-12 football

Waiting in anticipation of the new PAC-12 football season. Still empathize for Washington State and Oregon State, who were abandoned by the others who migrated elsewhere. They didn't react quick enough. But the new alignment took a big chunk out of the Mountain West, and Boise State looks well positioned to win the conference this year. They aren't up to the caliber of the Power Four schools, but they are strong enough to give the Group of Five a run for their money. Let's hope they'll be able to add a couple of more competitive football schools in the near future. Perhaps an ACC school?

HEB is the best - Love the deli, sushi

I moved to Texas in 2023, and HEB has grown on me. Was a Walmart shoppers before.

I love buying from the hot deli - just wish they would cook more BBQ wings. And I like to hit Sushiya on Wednesdays and Saturdays for their 7 dollar specials. Especially Saturday, love the white rice entree dishes. I also love that they have fresh baked bolillos for such an affordable price!
