I've been thinking about something I keep seeing more and more often... And I really want to know. This is no rage bait or anything like this... People will sometimes refuse to read a story the moment they see an "AI-generated" or "AI-assisted" tag.

And I'm genuinely curious why.

Let's assume the person came up with the actual story. The worldbuilding is theirs. The characters are theirs. The relationships, themes, conflicts, lore and plot are theirs. They know what happens, why it happens, and what they want the story to feel like.

But they use AI to help turn those ideas into prose. At what point does that make the story itself less valuable?

I'm not arguing that prose doesn't matter. Of course it does. Bad writing can ruin a great idea, and beautiful writing can elevate a simple one. But I sometimes wonder whether we put too much emphasis on who physically produced the sentences and too little emphasis on where the creative vision came from.

In other art forms, we're often completely comfortable separating vision from execution.

A composer doesn't have to personally play every instrument for us to consider the composition theirs.

A film director doesn't personally act every role, build every set, operate every camera or edit every frame. A large part of their creative work is deciding what the final piece should be, guiding other people toward that result, rejecting what doesn't fit and shaping everything into a coherent whole.

Obviously AI is not the same thing as working with human performers or crew. That's an important difference.

But the underlying question still interests me:

Why do we accept the separation between creative direction and execution in so many other art forms, but often reject it completely when AI is involved in writing?

Take something like Harry Potter.

When people say they love Harry Potter, what exactly do they love? Is it primarily JKRs prose? Or is it Hogwarts, the houses, the characters, the magic, the friendships, the mysteries, the atmosphere and the feeling of being inside that universe?

I actually have a fanfiction sitting on my computer that I've been hesitant to upload for exactly this reason. The concept, plot, characters, characterization, scene direction and continuity decisions are all mine. But... I used AI to help turn parts of it into prose. Then I rewrote parts myself, regenerated other sections, corrected logic errors, fixed continuity problems, adjusted characterization and kept iterating until the scenes matched what I had in mind. That's still a lot of work... and no slop...

And to be clear: I don't even call myself an author and I'm not trying to claim that writing the prose myself and directing an AI-assisted process are the same thing. And of course I would tag it as AI-assisted.

All I want is to share my world, characters and a story I care about... Especially as it's a niche... There are not many fanfics around. ^^ But I still hesitate to post it, because in many fanfiction communities the AI label alone seems to be enough for people to dismiss a story without reading a single paragraph.

Why is AI so much hated around the fanfic world?

Wenn ein Kind eine Behinderung hat, die man ihm sofort ansieht, reagieren viele Menschen verständnisvoll. Wenn es laut ist, sich ungewöhnlich verhält oder die Eltern Schwierigkeiten haben, das Kind durch eine Situation zu bringen, heißt es eher: „Ach, das arme Kind“ oder „Die Eltern haben es bestimmt nicht leicht.“

Bei Autismus oder ADHS sieht es plötzlich ganz anders aus.

Dann sind es auf einmal „Modediagnosen“, „Ausreden für schlechte Erziehung“ oder Eltern, die angeblich einfach nicht konsequent genug sind.

Mein Sohn ist drei und autistisch. Wenn er überfordert oder völlig aufgedreht ist, kann er sehr laut werden. Manchmal schreit er im Supermarkt, hört in diesem Moment kaum noch auf mich oder verhält sich so, dass Außenstehende sofort denken: „Die hat ihr Kind nicht im Griff.“

Ich kenne die Blicke. Ich kenne auch Aussagen wie: „Dann lass das Kind halt zu Hause, wenn es sich nicht benehmen kann.“

Was soll ich denn machen? Ihn vom öffentlichen Leben ausschließen?

Das Absurde ist: Wenn er nicht überfordert ist, hört er ziemlich gut. Aber genau diese normalen Situationen sieht niemand. Gesehen werden die fünf Minuten, in denen es eskaliert – und daraus wird dann die komplette Erziehung beurteilt.

Natürlich ist nicht jedes laute oder trotzige Kind autistisch oder hat ADHS. Und natürlich gibt es auch schlechte Erziehung.

Aber vielleicht sollten wir aufhören, bei einem Kind, dessen Behinderung wir nicht sehen können, automatisch davon auszugehen, dass keine existiert.

Nicht jede Behinderung sitzt im Rollstuhl. Und nicht jedes Verhalten eines Kindes lässt sich mit „Die Eltern müssen sich halt mal durchsetzen“ lösen.

Mal eine Meinung, die leider oft bei Frauen auf massive Gegenwehr stößt und daher wirklich als "unbeliebte Meinung" durchgeht... Kurz vorweg. Ich bin selbst eine Frau und Vollzeitmutter (3 Kinder, einer mit Einschränkungen) aus Leidenschaft und ich bin es satt mir ständig anhören zu müssen, dass ich faul bin und doch arbeiten gehen soll.

Nun zum Thema. Unsere Gesellschaft trägt durch ihre einseitige Bewertung von „Erfolg“ maßgeblich dazu bei, dass die Geburtenrate in Deutschland so dramatisch niedrig ist.

Kinder werden in den Medien und vielen Diskussionen fast nur noch als Ballast, Kostenfaktor und Karrierebremse dargestellt. Gleichzeitig wird Vollzeit-Muttersein oft als etwas Rückständiges oder Minderwertiges behandelt. Oft leider meistens von den Frauen selbst.. Sagt eine Frau „Ich bin zu Hause bei meinen Kindern“, kommt reflexartig: „Arbeitest du nicht?“ Sagt sie hingegen „Ich mache Karriere“, wird sie als stark und erfolgreich gefeiert. Kindererziehung wird oft als "lästige Care Arbeit" abgewertet und dass es die Frau von heute nicht mehr erfüllt... Die Frau von heute hält sich für etwas Besseres. Sie verbindet Muttersein mit den 50er Jahre und mit Unterdrückung durch den Mann.

Dabei übersehen wir etwas Wichtiges: Frauen und Männer sind biologisch und in ihren Aufgaben nicht identisch. Das ist keine Abwertung, sondern eine Tatsache. Viele Frauen hätten vielleicht eine starke innere Motivation, ihre eigenen Kinder intensiv zu begleiten, zu binden und großzuziehen und würden genau darin tiefe Erfüllung finden. Das ist keine „Care-Arbeit nebenbei“, sondern eine der verantwortungsvollsten und wertvollsten Aufgaben, die es gibt. Sie legt den Grundstein für die nächste Generation. :)

Stattdessen wird Frauen heute vermittelt, sie müssten „wie Männer“ funktionieren: möglichst früh wieder Vollzeit arbeiten, Karriere machen, finanziell unabhängig sein... am besten alles gleichzeitig. Die natürliche weibliche Rolle als Mutter wird dabei systematisch abgewertet. Das führt dazu, dass viele Frauen sich zwischen Kindern und dem gesellschaftlich anerkannten „erfolgreichen Leben“ entscheiden müssen. Viele entscheiden sich dann (verständlicherweise) gegen weitere Kinder oder gegen Kinder überhaupt.

Ich sage nicht, dass alle Frauen Mütter werden müssen oder dass Karriere schlecht ist. Viele Frauen sind in Berufen glücklich und das ist gut so. Aber wir brauchen dringend einen gesellschaftlichen Wandel in der Wertschätzung!

Solange wir weiter so tun, als wäre das „Muttersein“ etwas, das man möglichst effizient outsourcen sollte, werden die Geburtenraten weiter sinken... Kinder sind keine Bürde, sie sind unsere Zukunft. Und die Frauen, die sich bewusst für diese Aufgabe entscheiden, leisten damit etwas enorm Wichtiges für uns alle.

Over the past year I've written a massive fanfic set in the Star Citizen universe, already around 4,000–5,000 pages. So quite... a bit. ^^ The concept, characters, and story are all mine but the writing itself was done with AI (DeepSeek/Claude). Oh, and it's originally written in German... so publishing it in English would mean running it through an AI translation layer on top of everything else. English has a much wider reach, especially for a niche universe like Star Citizen. 😉

What started as a simple test (how does writing with AI actually work...), took on a life of its own. At some point it stopped being an experiment and became a real passion project. I'm autistic and this project has been a huge part of how I regulate... it became a genuine hyperfocus passion project. Means I wrote it for myself... But part of me wonders if I should keep it private. But another part wants to share it, getting feedback from actual humans instead of an AI. 😄

A few things I'm nervous about:

The AI slop thing... I know the creative community can be harsh about AI-assisted work. I want to be upfront about it, but I'm not sure how to present it without people dismissing it before even reading a word.

Aaand... the "Elara problem". In chapter one, back when this was still "just a test", I let the AI pick my main character's name. It landed on Elara of course. I've since learned that's basically the default AI protagonist name ever. 😅 But here's the thing: after a year with her, she's not just a name to me anymore. She's Elara. I don't want to rename her in 5,000 pages just because it sounds like a cliché.

So my questions:

• How do you disclose AI involvement (including translation) without leading with something that makes people freaking out?
• Where would you even publish something like this? AO3? Somewhere more AI-friendly?
• Any tips for keeping the "AI slop" comments manageable while still being honest?

Critics are ok... But for the story itself... Not the way it's written... (AI or not)
