Is it actually worth owning your own home?

My partner and I are in our late 30s and bought a house in 2023. We are financially comfortable and love having our own place, but lately we're wondering if it’s all worth it.

We took on a large mortgage, and our disposable income for fun or travel has vanished. If it's not the monthly payment, it’s a bill for an unexpected repair. Saturdays and Sundays are entirely eaten up by an endless list of jobs around the house and garden. We have no time or money for date nights, and all we ever seem to talk about anymore is the house, the bills, and the next job that needs doing.

My parents pushed really hard for us to get on the property ladder, because that's how they managed to retire early and build financial security. But doing all this in the 80s was different.

We’re doing okay right now, but the stress of work declining or job loss hangs over us. We’d be eating into savings immediately. The margin for error feels incredibly slim. We are stuck in a cycle of working to pay for a house we only have time to maintain, with no room left to enjoy life.

We've had some serious conversations about selling up and going travelling for a year. We're both just feeling so.... bored.

Has anyone else experienced this burnout? Can anyone convince me that this is actually a good thing?

EDIT: I'm not complaining about cleaning the bathroom - more like fixing fences, replacing guttering, sanding, painting, installing flooring, etc.

ANOTHER EDIT: Monthly house costs (mortgage & bills) account for roughly 35% of our income, which I understood was quite normal.

Suggestions for make-up brands/consultations?

I want to do my own make up for my wedding - hate the idea of not looking like myself, as I never wear foundation, etc.

But I'd like to have a consultation with an expert so we can build a look together, I can buy the products, and I can do it myself on the day (with a few practice runs).

Attached a couple of inspo photos - any recommendations for brands where I can book an appointment like this? I'm close to London so can easily get to the bigger department/flagship stores. I just don't really know what I'm looking for!

Did you have good sex on your wedding night?

Drunk, tired, emotional and overwhelmed. Never the best combo for good sex in my experience.... but the pressure on the wedding night is real. Tell me your stories.

A new nightmare has descended upon the veg patch...

First a plague of ants, now the garden is riddled with these beasts. And I've even found them in the house!

Should we just spend the money on house renovations?

Moved into our house in Dec 2023 as first time buyers. It's a Victorian cottage that needed a lot of work, especially in the forest garden surrounding the property. We've done a lot of the work ourselves, but we've now got the kitchen and bathroom left to do - they're not just ugly, rather they're gradually falling apart as they haven't been touched in 30+ years. We want to get professionals in as it's beyond our skillset (and we want a nice job).... but we just can't pull the trigger. It'll likely be £20k to do both - we have the money, but we both struggle to commit to big expenditures, so we've been suffering for 2.5 years with rooms we can't stand instead. Husband runs his own business and I work in marketing - household income is c. £120k per year. We both have ISAs that are steadily growing and I have an emergency fund in case of redundancy. Help me rationalise spending the money vs. stockpiling for the future?

Frugal tips for organic living

Husband and I are naturally adverse to spending money, so we've always lived pretty frugally. But we're actively trying to eat more organic, avoid unnecessary ingredients, and choose more natural household products - and the prices are eye watering! We've set up a vegetable patch, but so far it's only yielded about 10 strawberries. Any tips for making this work? Are those organic veg boxes good value for money? Keep getting served ads for Purdy & Fig and have resisted temptation so far!

Bills have been going up and up, so I want to understand what the actual reading it, but this isn't want I expected to see! It's directly outside our property on the pavement. Neighbours also have one outside thier house.

Is bongo's bingo any good?

Has anyone done bongo's bingo for a hen? I'm trying to find something that would be fun for everyone.... mum, MIL, aunties, friends, etc. It seems like it could be a good night for around 12 of us! But keen to know if anyone else has tried it.

Doctor didn't know - is this eczema?

Have been suffering with this on my hands and feet for years - doctor didn't know what it was. It flares up in the heat and when I'm stressed - blisters, itches, then peels in large sectios. I've done some googling... could it be dyshidrotic eczema? Any advice much appreciated!
