Forestry degree worth doing (UK)?

Hi all. I apologise in advance for even asking this question. I’m sure it’s asked here a lot, but most of the posts I’ve read are from Americans and I’d like to hear what people have to say about the field in the UK (specifically Scotland) at the moment.

I’m 19, working a dead end job, and want to move into an actual career. I’d like to hear from people in the industry whether or not it’s worth pursuing in the current year, what the job market is like for forestry, etc. I know the job market is pretty terrible for most industries at the moment, which is part of why I’ve been hesitant to pursue any field.

I don’t mind hard work, and I like the idea of being outside, plus I’m not overly concerned with making loads of money. I’d rather work a job I like than be rich (it would be an improvement on my current situation: miserable and broke, lol).

Quitting after 1 month?

Hey all, not sure if this is really the right place to post, but I can’t think of a more relevant subreddit. Apologies in advance for bad formatting, I’m on mobile.

I’m 19, and looking for a new job. Reason being that I hate my current job in fast food. I’ve only been there for 1 month(ish) but I already want out. I’m thinking of applying for a role in catering for the NHS, where I suspect the hours will be more consistent and more in line with my availability.

On one hand, the work experience in fast food seems relevant, which would hopefully give me a bit of an advantage if I land an interview. On the other hand, it doesn’t exactly look good that I’m quitting after a little over a month. Unfortunately, it’s my only work experience as I struggled to find a job for a long while, and I don’t want to lie about my start date because if they call my manager for a reference I’ll probably get caught.

Should I include my experience? Or leave it off the application and say I have no work experience?

Jobs for people who are genuinely stupid?

I’m 19 and in the UK, currently employed at a fast food place after a long period of unemployment. I hate my job. I don’t get along with anyone at work, the customers are assholes, and I work bad hours for minimum wage. The problem is that I’m scared this is the best I can do. I didn’t do well in school, even when I really put in the effort and studied I still barely scraped by. I didn’t pursue a higher education.

My job is easy, a lot of my co-workers are younger than me and they don’t struggle at all. I’ve been there a whole month and still fuck up regularly. I’m really trying my hardest and yet I keep fucking up. How am I supposed to work a real job if I can’t even work fast food?

Is it possible to turn my life around at this point? I feel bad for my mother, because she obviously knows that she’s raised a loser. I feel like I’m getting too old to change, and I’m scared that one day I’ll wake up at 40 and be doing the same shit. Are there any jobs that someone like me would even be able to do? I’m legitimately scared I might get fired from my current one.

Worth going for this apprenticeship?

Hey all. I’m 19 and living in Scotland, currently on minimum wage working in fast food and living with parents. My mother has been encouraging me to get an apprenticeship. I’m on board with the idea, but the ones advertised near me don’t particularly interest me. Got a couple interviews before, but ended up being rejected so I focussed on getting a minimum wage job as I was unemployed back then. Now I’m looking again and I’ve seen one that interests me, but I feel it may be a bad idea going for it.

Firstly, is it a bad idea to move out for an apprenticeship? Obviously apprentice wages are pretty bad, but the pay goes up after a year, and I like to think I’m already pretty frugal. I’d stay in a house share and maybe try to get a weekend job. Plus I have some savings.

Secondly, I would be commuting 2 hours. Not ideal, but once I’m qualified I would be able to move closer. The thought of a 4 hour round commute every day seems mental though, and I’m worried I’ll be too tired to study.

Of course, I know that applying does not mean I’ll even get the job, but I don’t want to waste my time doing a cover letter and tailoring my CV if everyone says it’s a terrible idea. I feel like I’m pretty stuck in life, and if I don’t take some sort of leap then I feel like I’ll be stuck working minimum wage forever.

19 with no direction

I’m 19 years old, still living at home with my mother and earning minimum wage. I hate my job. I’m still relatively new there, but I’m already miserable. I was unemployed for roughly a year, and I thought that when I started earning some money I would feel better but that didn’t happen. I have no real skills, no real interests, barely graduated school, I can’t even drive.

I would’ve gone to university but I know I’m not smart enough for that. My mother told me an apprenticeship would be good, but I think we both underestimated just how difficult it would be to obtain one (I had a couple of apprenticeship interviews, but didn’t get any of them). I feel like I’m at a dead end, and I’m scared I’ll end up working at McDonald’s forever.

I truly hate myself

Almost 20 years old. No friends, no qualifications, no driving license, living at home with a parent who I don’t get along with at all. At least I managed to get a job, which i’m grateful for, but it’s a shitty minimum wage fast food job. I’ve lost almost all interest in my hobbies, I barely even watch TV nowadays. Most of my time (when I’m not working ofc) is spent in bed, either sleeping or bed rotting.

I can’t look on the mirror without being filled with self loathing. I’m unattractive, short, kinda chubby. I have a terrible personality, my social skills are virtually non-existent. I kept telling myself that things would get better and yet they never do. I’m at a point where I can’t even imagine myself ever being happy.

I think I might be incapable of relating to normies

i suppose, technically, i am a normie now. given that i have a full time job at a shitty fast food place. i actually don’t mind the work, its almost fun at times (though i’ll likely grow to hate it with time). if i could just stand in the back and make drinks/food and not talk to anyone all shift then i’d honestly be pretty happy. it’s almost like a video game, you can kind of switch your mind off and enter a flow state. plus getting paid is neat.

my issue stems entirely from socialising. the expectation to be friendly and make small talk and smile. i’m bad at that. i can just about tolerate serving people at the till, but socialising with co-workers is genuinely mind-numbing. i think i’m fundamentally different from them, and they can all tell. they side eye me and look at me like i’m crazy. maybe i am lol. it’s not like i’m there to make friends, but it sucks that i just have to stand there and smile awkwardly while they talk.

anyway, that’s all. a few people asked for an update when i started working. i put it off because it seemed irrelevant to the sub, and there seems to have been an influx of work related posts here, which sort of goes against the whole point of the sub. but i feel like this is kind of almost semi-relevant? maybe i’m wrong. hope everyone here is well.

i don’t have any ambitions anymore

all i do is lie in bed all day. i don’t want to watch tv, i don’t want to play video games, i don’t want to go outside. i hate socialising because i’m terrible at it. basic tasks like showering and brushing my teeth feel like so much effort. at this point i don’t even really enjoy eating. i want to go to sleep forever, it’s the only thing that doesn’t make me miserable. my mother acts like there’s something wrong with me, but i don’t understand how the rest of the world doesn’t feel like this. i think i’m destined to be sad for the rest of my life. i don’t see a future for me.

I feel like people just fake being happy

i cannot imagine ever being happy in life. i don’t want anything other than to disappear, i hate myself and what my life has become. no amount of money could make me happy, nor could any relationships. ever since i was a child i have felt this way, and it only ever gets worse and worse.

i truly do not understand when i see my peers on social media out having fun. obviously, i’m aware that what you see on online doesn’t tell the full story, but i still can’t wrap my head around it. i don’t even quite know how to put it into words, i just don’t understand how anyone can feel anything other than misery. i desperately want off this planet, the only thing preventing me from ending it is my own cowardice, and so i’m stuck here living. does everyone else just pretend that they don’t hate being alive? and i’m just too pathetic and weak to join in on the act? does everyone else feel this way and i’m the only loser who can’t handle real life?

Job interview at McDonald’s

i got an interview at mcdonald’s and i’m deadass so scared. i’ve been rejected from so many places, but if i get deemed incapable of flipping burgers then i genuinely might end it all. part of me doesn’t even want to go because the rejection will absolutely crush me. and even if i get the job, i won’t be able to tell anyone in my life because i know they’ll belittle me about it.

Being a NEET without a car sucks

i don’t drive, my parents won’t teach me. need a job to afford lessons, need a car to get to a job. i’ve been waiting 10 minutes for this fuckass bus to show up so that i can go to an interview for a job i don’t even particularly want. fuck my chungus life.

Ruined my own life, is it possible to fix it?

For context, I’m 18, almost 19. Only ever worked one job, which I walked out of after a few days. In my defence, the job sucked, but that’s not really an excuse. I leech off of my mother, living in her house and not paying rent, but we don’t get along so there’s a good chance she’ll kick me out.

I was encouraged to apply for an apprenticeship after graduating high school, but i’ve been rejected from every single one. I’ve given up on ever landing an apprenticeship as now I can’t even find a minimum wage job who’ll hire me. I would love to have gone to University, but I’m nowhere near smart enough. I have no real aspirations, and no skills. I can’t think of any job that I would enjoy, I don’t really know what I like, I can only think of jobs that I definitely wouldn’t want to do (but beggars can’t be choosers I suppose).

Is recovery possible at this stage?

anyone else feel overly sheltered by their parents?

a lot of people here talk about how their parents want them out of the house, but mine are completely the opposite. not trying to blame them for the way that i turned out but they literally get mad at me if i go out for a walk, despite us living in a very safe area. i don’t even cook for myself, i only ever eat ready-meals. obv i’m grateful that they buy me food, but it feels like they don’t want me to develop any independence.

Stuck in this lifestyle

I don’t really want to be a NEET. Obviously no one wants to work, but I want to be normal and contribute to society. I want a job. I only started NEETing because literally nowhere would hire me, and I’m too dumb for university. I gave up on applying for jobs after being constantly rejected, but recently started applying again. Got an interview for a minimum wage job at a pizza place and got rejected the next day. I have another interview tomorrow but I don’t even want to go because I know what will happen. Is there any point in even bothering at this point? Also why the fuck is it so hard to get even a minimum wage job.

Interview Clothes

Does anyone here know what to wear if you have obvious scars on your arms? Usually I would wear a long-sleeve button-up shirt, but I don’t want to be overly formal, and am told that for the positions I’m applying for (back of house) I should just wear a black t-shirt. I have scars on my inner arms and burn marks on my outer arms, so there’s no way I can wear just a t-shirt. I look stupid whenever I wear long-sleeve t-shirts. Would a sweater/jumper be too informal for interviews? I’m kind of panicking lol, I have an interview next week and I really need the job.
