Reasons for using a faceplate?

I've been turning for a few years now and I think I've only used a faceplate once (to turn a stool top). I usually use the screw which came with the Nova chuck to start turning and then add a tenon/foot to grip in the chuck.

Are there situations where a faceplate is better or offers flexibility which a screw chuck doesn't? I mostly turn small pieces so haven't been concerned about the work-holding.

EDIT: Thanks for all the replies!

Source for quality peppermill & salt shaker hardware?

I've never turned a peppermill but I now find myself in need of one, along with a salt shaker. Can anyone recommend a source for quality hardware? I know about Penn State; are their kits worthwhile? Are there better places?

Boston paid $11 million settlement to man freed after nearly 40 years in prison

This is why the death penalty is *always* wrong (in case you needed more reasons).

And this bullshit:

>The settlement also says that the decision to pay the $11 million is “not to be construed as an admission of liability” by the city or the officers and detectives named.

is just bullshit. What a disgrace.

>Joseph Jabir Pope was incarcerated for 37 years for first-degree felony murder before a judge threw out his conviction in 2022 because prosecutors withheld important evidence in his case. He filed a federal lawsuit against the city in 2024, alleging misconduct by several police officers and detectives, including that they did not share evidence that could have helped Pope’s defense.

>The city and Pope, 73, reached a settlement last August, according to court records. The Globe learned of the agreement after acquiring a list of city settlements spanning several months in 2025 through a public records request.

>The records showed the city made a $11 million payout for what was described as a “civil rights discrimination” matter involving Boston police. But they did not identify who had received the settlement. [...]

>According to the settlement, the city did not admit to any wrongdoing. The settlement also says that the decision to pay the $11 million is “not to be construed as an admission of liability” by the city or the officers and detectives named.

>The city made the payment “solely” to avoid the cost of further litigation and it denies “any wrongdoing, alleged unlawful conduct, and/or liability for any injury or damage,” according to the settlement.

What Kevin McHale thought when watching the Celtics this season: ‘Some days the 3-point shooting gets a little much for me’

". . . there comes a time when the ball has got to touch the paint." YES! I used to be an NBA fan but the combination of endless 3 point shots and constant foul calls just made the whole thing too boring to bother with. Of course I grew up watching Kevin and Larry, Robert Parish, Dennis and Danny . . . and later in Chicago with Michael and Scottie.

>Kevin McHale was a seven-time All-Star who won three NBA championships during his Hall of Fame career with the Celtics. But when the big man is at home watching his former team play, his general view tends to align with a vocal segment of the fan base.

>“Some days the 3-point shooting contest gets a little bit much for me and I do some head shaking,” McHale said by telephone this week. “Basketball has changed in a lot of ways. So, the Celtics — I like them and I think [coach] Joe Mazzulla has done a good job. But I just think there comes a time when the ball has got to touch the paint. You’ve got to attack, you’ve got to put people on their heels, and you’ve got to collapse a defense.”

How the end of ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ could impact WBZ-TV and other local stations

This is true for me: the only reason I have ever seen any of WBZ's 11 o'clock news program was because I was waiting for Colbert to start.

In general local news seems aimless and repetitive - weather reports which go on forever and could just be replaced with a chart, little to no national news, not much local reporting. And endless commercials . . . for the local news - which I presume is because they could not sell the ad time.

>The end of the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which will air its final episode on Thursday, is expected to bring in a large audience for CBS to cap off his recent run as the most watched late night program.

But the loss of the long-running show — which is being replaced by media executive Byron Allen’s comedy program “Comics Unleashed” — could also put a dent in the audience and revenue of WBZ-TV (Channel 4) and the network’s other owned local news stations and affiliates, that have relied on “The Late Show” to support viewership for their nightly newscasts.

Community college student from Michigan to be 1st woman to represent US at world welding competition

"world welding competition"?

Never heard of such a thing. Kind of cool. And "WorldSkills"? I wonder if it is televised? . . . ABC's Wide World of Skills® . . . the thrill of good penetration and the agony of inclusions . . . 😃

>Described as the Olympics of the skilled trades, WorldSkills determines the globe’s best in technical disciplines that include construction, information technology, manufacturing and robotics.

>And, of course, welding.

>Sposito is the sixth Washtenaw Community College student to qualify in WorldSkills history. WCC has produced more WorldSkills welding alums than any other school in the United States, the Ann Arbor college said

When did "roommates" become a landlord organized thing?

I see some posts here and elsewhere about "landlords renting out rooms" etc. When did that become a 'thing'?

Back in the day, I had roommates but it was a situation where we would ask people we knew or advertise and then interview people, selecting the ones we felt most compatible with. The idea of some landlord determining who I share my living space with kind of creeps me out.

It's sort of 'boarding house' circa 1930s or something. Has this become the norm?

Handheld spot welder? (trying again)

I posted about this earlier but I guess the example vid & pix I posted were too extreme.

This YouTube video of Arthur Ganson (great sculptor) spot welding wire shows exactly the type of tool I am looking for. The ease of that process compared to what I do now makes me cry. He starts @ the 01:27 point.

It's probably a shop-made tool but does anyone know where I can buy something like that?

My sad tomato seedlings

These are cherry tomato seedlings from 'Burpee' brand seeds. I planted them March 25th (!) and have had them under grow lights since then. I've used these grow lights the past couple of years and had decent results. I've also been careful to not over-water, etc. The soil is just fresh potting soil (I forget the brand).

I don't understand why these seedlings are so anemic. I guess I will stick with them a while longer but what a disappointment. Does anyone think they can recover??

Lightweight, handheld spot welder for steel?

I make wire sculpture using @ 16 gauge steel wire (like rebar wire). I've been brazing the joints but that can be a bit slow, awkward and I'd rather not have the bronze color, as I let the sculptures rust.

I've tried spot welding using a tabletop spot welder but that is very difficult to position the work in and it is way too heavy to lift. I've seen the spot welders being sold to make battery packs for electric devices(?). Those seem intended to be used on titanium (?) and many of them are very cheap (and likely junk?). Would these have enough power to spot weld mild steel?

Then I saw this YouTube video where the person made their own handheld spot welder. It's a horror show from a 'health and safety' perspective and I am certainly not going to attempt it – but it is *exactly* the sort of tool I am looking for.

Do such tools exist commercially? I am thinking along the lines of a very lightweight, corded handpiece with either a trigger or a foot pedal to activate the pulse. My searches have turned up nothing relevant.

Any container gardeners here? Have you planted your seedlings outdoors yet?

I have a bunch of seedlings I have been trying to harden before planting them outdoors but the weather has been so cold and erratic that I have held back on shoving them out of the nest. Has anyone (everyone??) done this already? Maybe I am projecting my quite negative feelings about this cold and dreary Spring onto my little seedlings?

I'm no great gardener but I enjoy growing stuff from seed and this Spring just seems odd.

(and I really do not understand all this 'flair' BS. WTF is the point? And why can't I make my own?)

Boston Globe: Is the GOP nomination for governor already sewn up? History says, not so fast.

>To judge from Mike Minogue’s campaign, the GOP nomination for governor is all settled.

Or to speak the language of this very successful businessman, a completed transaction.

After a resounding victory at the state convention in April, Minogue is pushing for his lone remaining opponent, former MBTA head Brian Shortsleeve, to get out of the race.

And to judge from Mike Minogue’s campaign ads . . . he apparently does not know any Black people at all. Nary a one in the ads I've seen on OTA TV. I guess that is 'on brand' for Republicans in general but not sure that will play well in Massachusetts.

I mostly walk and bike along the Charles in the section near the Herter Center in Allston. A few years ago I noticed that all the trash cans had disappeared. They have not returned.

Does anyone know if this is some 'policy' and not just a fork up? There used to at least be trash cans adjacent to the parking areas along Soldiers Field Road.

I have a Fold 1 Plus, new in late Oct. One of the brakes started squeaking (when pressed) pretty soon after I got it but I have not gotten around to taking it in for service. I've never had a bike with disc brakes so don't know where to start in DIY-ing it. Is this a simple adjustment?

Also (unrelated): my chain came off yesterday and when I was putting it back on I was pretty surprised to discover how thin the metal of the front sprocket is – I can flex it just by hand. Coming from riding a Trek steel mountain bike for many years, I wasn't expecting that.

The Boston Globe is running an arrogant AF opinion piece from a dog owner whining about the people who do not want to have dogs urinating and defecating on their property.

At first I thought it was some sort of parody but I think this guy, Stephen O’Connor, actually means it. So yeah, dogs don't read lawn signs – and arrogant dog owners just ignore them.

I wonder how he would feel if a "pee flash mob" showed up to urinate in his front yard?
