Halal Boglehead Portfolio

Also posted in r/Bogleheads

Hello! Before I learned more about my faith (Islam/muslim) I was investing in 70/30 between FZROX and FZILX (no bonds yet since I’m 25). I am having a hard time picking a halal (halal means aligning with Islamic principals) U.S. fund. I have dialed in the international with SPWO. The options are:

  1. SPUS (s&P 500 fund)
  2. HLAL (large and mid cap)
  3. MNZL (newer, Russel 1000)
  4. MNZL + SPUS

The reason it’s difficult is because MNZL gives us more of the market but has some additional ethical screening that I don’t agree with (halal screening which I want but then another ethical screening on top) thus leaves out holdings such as nvidia, google, etc.

I was thinking going with 60% MNZL, 30% SPWO, 10% SPUS to reintroduce some holdings that are not in MNZL but it does give overlap would start straying away from Boglehead philosophy. I would appreciate any insight thank you!

**To clarify:** SPWO is already locked in at 30%, so I’m only trying to decide how to build the 70% U.S. allocation. I’m not trying to chase recent performance or sector returns, my goal is a simple, broadly diversified, long-term Boglehead-style portfolio. MNZL appeals to me because of its broader Russell 1000-based universe, but I dislike the additional non-Sharia ethical screen. The 60% MNZL + 10% SPUS idea would still leave me at 70% U.S. / 30% international; SPUS would only be there to partially reintroduce some Sharia-compliant companies excluded by MNZL’s additional screen.

How hard is it to find a 4th gen GS350?

Hello all! I’m currently 25 and looking to get my “first car.” I have been driving since I was 16, but always drove my dad’s cars. Now I feel like I kind of want my own car. I work remote, so I don’t “need” a car and can get by with using my dad’s car, but it is annoying when I need it and he has it and various other reasons.

I’ve new in my used car search and have been researching. Initially, I really wanted CarPlay and a “modern” car, but the 2013+ Lexus GS350 has all the good features except car play, which I can easily install with the help of a mechanic friend. Plus the car looks so clean, and has everything im looking for in a new car: luxury, reliable, and fast lol.

I’ve narrowed it down, and am looking for 2013+ Lexus GS350 F Sport with AWD (live in northern Virginia, we get all types of weather here).

It feels like these are so scarce, and hard to come by. Any tips on what to look for, mileage, preferable years, how much I should be paying etc. I would prefer to be >20k all in.

Appreciate the advice, thank you!

Does purchasing a home make sense in this area in today’s market?

Currently 25M (single no kids, but looking to move with family which includes parents and sister to give them better housing opportunity). I’ve been saving for a home for a couple of years now (about 200k cash) and my TC is currently 180k (base, RSU, Bonus, with RSU being around 30k).

We currently live in subsidized housing (bad area of Alexandria, tiny apartment), due to my dad’s disability and I would really love to get everyone in a home together. I feel like with my solo income buying just doesn’t make sense, and renting comes out a little better. My income might pose an issue for our next lease renewal due to the subsidized housing, hence the reason of moving everyone out together. So either I can move out solo to not jeopardize their benefits, or put us all in a better opportunity together.

Looking for advice on what you would do in this situation and if others lean towards buying or renting in this area? Thank you!

EDIT:

Originally was just maxing out HSA / Roth IRA and only getting match for 401k. My thought process was to buy a house, but no longer interested in that as of now. I was very cash heavy due to this goal, and threw it all in taxable. Will be maxing out 401k, HSA, and Roth IRA this year and also starting MBDR to get some extra tax advantaged retirement savings
