Alternative for Yandex.Browser and Vivaldi?

I love and hate Yandex.Browser, and I need an alternative to it.

Why hate:

  • Because a lot of telemetry and data are sent to Yandex and the Russian government

Why love:

  • Workspaces - best realisation I saw
  • Side panel that could open websites, not only extensions and tools.

What I try to find:

  • Chrome based preffered
  • Browser with Workspaces and Side panel

What I already tried:

  • Chrome - Tabs do not replace workspaces - clutter, Side panel only for Extensions
  • Opera - too motley
  • Vivaldi - for geeks, looks ugly (CSS hacks can't help and too hard to use). It looked like what I needed before I tried to adjust it for myself. Side panel is unuseful, themes are ugly. Like I returned to Linux and now it's 2016.
  • Brave - A lot of ads, all the problems of Chrome
  • Zen - Hate vertical tabs
  • Dia - yet another GPT instead of a browser
  • Safari - unusable if you want to use Extensions (I need them)

Extensions for vanilla Chrome can't make what i need, I need native support.

What else should I try?

One more of mine overcame milestone 500 users

It's just yet another QR code scanner

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/kod-—-qr-scan/hiimmlknfpjhehchmgphddapoddiphmg

But with the magic of keyword optimisation, it found its place under Sun.

Of course, I think that it's better and more useful than others:

  • It could read multiple QR codes on the page
  • It follows your surfing automatically (without clicking on every page)
  • It highlights the hovered QR right on the page
  • Works with different types of QR and encoded information

My Strategy:

  • I found some ideas that already exist in CWS, popular, and not so hard to make
  • I found some keywords with Google Trends and Semrush with value but not so competitive in CWS
  • I made SEO (keyword optimisation) pages in all available languages
  • By using the huge trust of CWS it gets position on the first screen of SERP for some of these keywords
  • profit

I hoped to celebrate 100 users, but...

I hate Google CWS Analytics. Not enough that I have to wait 3 days to see my numbers, but twice a month it shows 0 users. And it's the TOP-3 company in the world.

I know you'll ask - it's Loop YouTube Video

Learn English Words and Growth your vocabulary in Chrome Sidebar.

Learn English Words and Growth your vocabulary in Chrome Sidebar

I've ported my mobile app, onemoreword, to a browser extension.

It’s an app focused only on learning English vocabulary: 10,000+ words with pictures, examples, and audio.

You can recall words in different ways — multiple choice, typing, listening. Sounds familiar, but I hope that it will be good for some audience.

If you want ot learn English and your native language is Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, German, French, Polish, Turkish, or Italian, this Extension is for you.

Add to Chrome here - https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/onemoreword-english-vocab/kjaeopaaggaiphbibfecaggephpnlfcb

There are too few users? Stop polish your product! Quick Self-Diagnosis!

Open CWS developer dashboard and look at next metrics:

  • Impressions
  • Page Views
  • Installs
  • Uninstalls

What do you see?

Low Impressions

  • Problem: Google doesn’t show your extension to visitors
  • Why: Google doesn’t understand what it is and why it fits visitors' search requests
  • How to Improve:
    • Add keywords to Title, Short Description, Long Description
    • Translate Title, Short Description, Long Description to the top 30 languages to fit not only English requests

Low CTR (Impressions → Page Views)

Low Install Rate (Page Views → Installs)

High Uninstall Rate

  • Problem: The product doesn’t meet user expectations
  • Why: I don't know individually
  • How to Improve:
    • Ask users
      • Add a feedback form inside the extension
      • Add a feedback form on Uninstall trigger
    • Polish the product (Only if you have no feedback or you are 100% sure of some problems)

Polishing is the last thing you should do to grow users count and the first thing most developers do.

Always fix the earliest bottleneck first.

Made a free tool to create cleaner YouTube screenshots — looking for feedback

I've launched YouTube Screenshot — Frame Capture

I needed a few screenshots from YouTube, but with specific frames.

There are a few extensions for capturing frames from YouTube, but I needed not a frame, but a screenshot with YouTube context (player, title, logo) and I like the polished style of tools like CaptureX (round corners, shadows and background create an magic aesthetic).

Instead of using 3 tools in a row, I built for myself a small extension, but was enthusiastic and kept adding features until it became a proper Chrome extension.

Right now it's a full studio for creating beautiful screenshots, especially for YouTube videos.

  • Capture in one click
  • Select the best frame of the moment
  • Add player, browser mockup, video information without struggling
  • Add beautiful background, text, QR with link - pictures are ready to publish

https://preview.redd.it/rj9qkg95e4hh1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=2e7ff6b25859e0e542d9a259b1dd6e7957b3e46c

Let's try! It’s completely free at the moment.

Open to your feedback and improvement ideas.

Stop publishing beta extensions!

This small mistake could cost you a lot of installs.

On the one hand nobody wants to be a beta tester of your app.
On the other hand you tell your visitors "I'm not sure about my app, I think it sucks, works bad, raw and buggy".

If you published it - it is your FIRST production version. Use number 1.

Same time I see extensions published months ago or even more than year ago with versions like 0.2.13.

Maybe this small detail affect only 1-2% of users, but it's free and quick to not loose them, and with time even 1% could be thousand of additional users for free.

For you it's just number. For users it's a red flag, that it's raw. There are a lot of competitors, users prefer something that it least in head of developer stable.

Not done!!! But enough to share it public.

But what if it has some bugs? Or if you have a backlog with thousand of tasks? It's OK! No problem in it! MacOS has version 26 and a lot of bugs and long backlog. Because it lives. Maybe Windows 11 is perfect? Or Android 17?

Version under 1 shows only your hesitation and uncertainty. Enough!

Bump version of your extension right now!

Some oft mistakes you do when you create "Screenshots" images for CWS listing of your Extension

Screenshots section is the biggest, brightest, noticeable part of the extensions listing. Same time people are mostly recognize world visually.

Users choose products in seconds, and text have no change to be read. You must SHOW how your product works.

For me it's the main thing that affects conversion rate from "Page views" to "Installs"

But a lot of developers spend months for polishing product and make Screenshots carelessly for seconds. And surprises when have no installs of their "the best product on the Earth"

1. Screenshots are just screenshots. A lot of exts has pictures of whole UI without explanation what it is, what problem it solves, why I should install it.

Interesting, but people don't like to read texts, but do it if text is on the image. Use it. Explain shortly what it does or what main problem it could solve for me, or at least hook which convince me to spend additional 10-15 seconds for exploring the page

https://preview.redd.it/osxcwr4m5yfh1.png?width=6838&format=png&auto=webp&s=03fa2b45c8d253949468ffc9073d375e4c44aa93

2. Hoping on second screenshots. Most of users see by default only 1st screenshot in series. Others are only as a previews in carousel. And only 10% of visitors click on second.

Typical look of listing

If you want to tell a lot of ideas with series of screenshots, you must hook with first one. The first one should tell the main advantage, main problem it solves, or main hook.

Imagine, that you have no only one Screenshot slot, and make first screenshot like it's the only.

If you really need to move users on the next screenshot - explain it

Call to action - Swipe left!

3. Believe, that your Screenshots are 1280x800.

Yeah, you must upload Screenshots in 1280x800 size, but users see it 4 times smaller

Real resolution

https://preview.redd.it/cwd63n0ahyfh1.png?width=6838&format=png&auto=webp&s=24e8e59b212aa172cd95acf660903ddaa163d3cc

All texts are printed with standard 12-14px size aren't readable on your listing page. A lot of elements looks noisy. Use sizes cearfully, verify readability in real size.

  1. Use only 50% of square. It's consequence of previous one.

Your image is not so big as you think. Use whole area of it

Empty space - lost opportunities

5. Show UI, not feature

Visual part of Screenshot frequently used for showing whole UI of your ext.

It's noisy, and make hard to understand what it does

https://preview.redd.it/m5p4y7x6eyfh1.png?width=6838&format=png&auto=webp&s=eeb0807b626efc9e55350df25605a367ae5d1140

6. Show website not your extension

It's classic. You show me frame of browser, someone else's website, trash and visual noise, but only 5% of screenshot is YOURS

https://preview.redd.it/75cxr8bxfyfh1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5fb0e6d44a4dc9be2fa0d932c95badb01cb8d7f

Making Small Promo with AI Image generators. Prompt inside.

In previous post I told why Small Promo is so important.

Here I want to share my base rules for creating Small Promo, which I use as PROMPT for generative models (for me ChatGPT make Small Promos much better than NanoBanana).

So, of course it's not perfect, sloppy, sometimes you need to generate 3-4 versions, and big companies with professional designers make better (and choose one only after AB-tests etc). But as I see, 99% of new Extensions have Small Promo Tile 100 times worse (30% don't have at all)

---

PROMPT (and my rules, copy all to end)

<prompt>

Create a Small Promo Tile image for Extension for the Chrome Web Store

Extension description: Here should be a description of YOUR extension (not so long). You could also add some screenshots of UI

Technical specifications

Result image canvas size must be 440×280

Stick to it strictly, it's requirement of Google Web Store

What is a Small Promo Tile?

The Small Promo Tile is the main storefront card for our Chrome extension in the Chrome Web Store. It appears on the Web Store homepage, category pages, and search results when users are looking for similar tools.

Primary goal

Convince users to click the card and visit the extension’s page. We want a high click-through rate (CTR).

Core Principles

The 3-Second Rule (One Clear Message)

The banner is very small. Don’t try to communicate every feature. Within 3 seconds, users should immediately understand the single most important problem the extension solves.

Clear and Concise Text

Use no more than 3–5 words. The text should be large, bold, and easy to read.

Instead of the product name, communicate the value proposition (UVP).

Example:

❌ AdBlocker v2

✅ Blocks All Ads

Emotional Visuals Instead of UI Screenshots

A screenshot of the extension’s interface will become an unreadable blur at this size.

Instead, use:

large isometric illustrations,

bold 3D elements,

eye-catching graphics associated with the benefit (for example: a rocket = speed, a shield = security).

Strong Color Contrast

The Chrome Web Store background is white, so the banner must stand out.

Use vibrant, high-contrast colors while staying consistent with our brand palette.

Avoid washed-out pastel colors.

Communicate Simplicity

The design should instantly convey:

“This extension is simple, lightweight, and solves your problem in one click.”

Use fewer small details and more whitespace.

No Fake UI Elements (Google Policy)

Do not include fake Download, Install, or Chrome-like buttons, arrows, or interface elements.

Google may reject the asset during review.

The design itself—not deceptive UI—should drive conversions.

</prompt>

Small Promo Image is your main trump card in CWS search listing

Which extension get more of your attention in screenshot 1?
Titles are similar, descriptions are similar and users don't read them.
If you want to be more more visible, Small Promo Image is your main lever.

Of course you should be in search results first of all, and in Top-10 (noboby click "load more") or better in Top-5 (first screen without scrolling)

---

Same time it's a SMALL image, and usually it's a mistake to write a lot of small text, to make accent on your logo, not to show idea visually (not with detailed screenshot).

Open second screenshot for 2 seconds. If you search "AI Chat in sidebar" (exactly chat, exactly in sidebar) which one could be a solution for your request?

The main problem of most new extensions!

I've ran this thread to help new extensions to find their place under the Sun.

And most of developers sent me extensions with same problems. Most of them is on the extension page in CWS and users just never find it and never install it. It's not necessary to see how cool is product if I understand that it get about ZERO installs because of problems which exists BEFORE install.

And one of them I find disaster!

This problem is naming! Title of extension.

Typical naming of new extension looks like this (sorry bro, who made this)

https://preview.redd.it/0zkzn7hg97ch1.png?width=1682&format=png&auto=webp&s=8dd64d581f50052de5e5376f1a8be44f27052aeb

https://preview.redd.it/3tkyyv4xb7ch1.png?width=838&format=png&auto=webp&s=2dd1d94528ae26ec0b763e69ee998a710fed3e2f

Developers spend a lot of time to find unique title for extension which MEAN NOTHING.

It's absolutely unuseful to give a name like brand, because you are not a brand.
If there are no at least 100 searches per day in google with name of your app - it's not a brand.

Why it ruins all?

Because users search not brand names (or brand already has 100000+ users, like duolingo or onetab or adobe). They search feature name or problem name, like "PDF convert to Images", "Download video from youtube", "Hide shorts video" etc

If your TITLE has no something similar to request of real users, maybe not the same but something that say google 'hey, my app fit to this request' - you HAVE NO CHANCE TO BE FOUND.

The only way to this extensions is to advertise is for time or money, but it get ZERO organic users, just because users never search "ConvoCarry".

A lot of popular extensions has no cool "brand" name at all, only 2-3 keywords

https://preview.redd.it/jlj81efhb7ch1.png?width=1684&format=png&auto=webp&s=73c73aa00088f6edc12292e3389b9d4d0eed4b81

They sent no money and no time to promote it get huge amount of free traffic from users who are looking for it himself.
