My zebra babies love the Repashy “Morning Wood” jerky, but could I add some protein to it?

I’ve been feeding my zebra isopod colony Repashy “Morning Wood” as a supplemental food regularly, first in powder form then later in jerky form to last longer since the powder would disappear within a day once the first group of babies were born. Recently I did a little more research and found out it isn’t a great source of protein so I ordered some freeze dried brine shrimp for them. I was wondering if I should just offer it separately or if I could grind it up and mix it into the powder when I make the jerky. It would be a lot more convenient to be able to offer all the nutritional supplements in one piece but I want to do whatever is best for my babies.

Planting staghorn ferns in a hanging basket

I got several staghorn ferns (P. Bifurcatum) at a local nursery and am planning on planting them in a hanging basket. I saw some videos where they planted them facing up in the basket and others where they cut slits on the sides of the coir lining and poked the ferns through. Is one method better than the other? None of them have any shield fronds that I can see so what’s a good way of securing them if I plant them through the sides? Another thing I couldn’t find much information on is how thick the lining of sphagnum moss should be and what substrate mix I should use to fill the rest of the basket with. I’m in Houston, TX if that matters. Any info is greatly appreciated, I’ve never done a project like this before but I’m excited to learn!

Gorgeous crested Pachypodium

I had never heard of a crested pachypodium before! This plant took my breath away when I first saw it at a local nursery! I was trying to think of how I could bring it home but I got a reality check when I read the price tag. (I’m not calling the price unreasonable, but I still haven’t wrapped my head around the concept of a plant being valued at a higher price than my car lol)

What’s the best way to seal the gaps on my terrarium doors?

I bought this tank and set it up to house my zebra isopods but I noticed these gaps are definitely wide enough for the smaller ones to escape, especially the babies. The gaps are also probably part of why the terrarium drying out a little faster than I’d like. Is there a good way to seal these gaps while still keeping the doors functional or should I just get a different tank without doors like this? Any advice is greatly appreciated, this is my first real terrarium (a few years ago my family kept some monarch caterpillars in a tank with a bunch of milkweed for a few days to protect them from the incoming freeze but idk if that counts as a terrarium). Thanks in advance!

I was given a bucket of Aloe Vera pups. Should I do anything before planting?

I got a bucket of Aloe Vera pups from my grandma this morning. They all have a bunch of dead leaves on them but not a lot of roots. Should I be removing all the dead leaves by pruning or peeling or should I just plant them with the dead leaves underground? I peeled some of the dead leaves off the pup in the second photo and the center fell apart like a rotten branch. I want them to do well but I have no idea what I’m doing. Thanks for any help!

My zebra isopods made babies!

Camera is a little shaky because I was super excited. I wasn’t expecting babies this soon, I only got them in late April and I’ve heard it can take 3-4 months to start seeing babies. Guess I got lucky! They are all over the enclosure, although I did mistake a couple springtails for babies lol. Some are above ground but there was this whole group of them in this pocket!

Zebra isopod plants

I’ve got a 10 gallon tank that I’m turning into a terrarium for my colony of zebra isopods once they have multiplied a bit. I had a bromeliad on the moist side but it started flowering after only a week and I don’t want to deal with a dying plant once the isopods are moved in. It was a little too bulky for that area anyway. I’d like something a little smaller and more leafy but I’ve heard zebra isopods love to eat live plants. Can anyone recommend some plants that have been able to survive with their zebra isopods? I’d love to be able to include some live moss but that doesn’t seem like something that would last long.

Got this on clearance from Lowe’s. What should I put in it?

I found this jar on the clearance rack at Lowe’s. Originally, it had a long-dead Sarracenia purpurea inside that was bone dry. Since it’s only around 800 ml (4”W x 7” H), I’m not gonna put any creatures inside except for maybe springtails. I’ve never made a terrarium that was purely about the plants so I’m excited! The holes on the sides are nifty because I can use them to control the humidity a bit. Because the jar is pretty narrow, there’s only enough room for one plant and some moss, so I really want that plant to look good. I was thinking of adding a piece of driftwood for support and picking a climbing plant. Another idea I had was something leggy with wide leaves, like a Syngonium, to create a canopy look. If anyone has any plant or moss recommendations, or general advice, I’d really appreciate it!

Is petflytrap.com a good place to buy from?

For the most part they seem to have good prices and they are located close to me so there is less time in transit than most locations. My main concern is whether or not they are potted appropriately. I hope they are since some stuff on the site is cheaper than other sites that sell plants bare root. I’m fine with repotting them if necessary, I just want them to be healthy. Are there certain plants that are better/worse quality from them? E.g., “the venus flytraps are potted in a good mix but their nepenthes need to be repotted”. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

I’ve been searching for my dream plant (ungrafted Euphorbia Lactea Cristata) for almost two years and today I randomly found a bunch of them at a local plant store!

I can’t believe my luck! I hadn’t seen a single one at any stores near me other than a single grafted one that was rotting in a corner. I couldn’t find any good listings online either so I had almost given up hope until I stumbled upon these beautiful specimens at an old plant nursery I had never heard of before even though it’s less than 10 minutes from where I live! I bought the pale one but I’m seriously considering going back to get one of the more fan shaped ones as well. I don’t really have space for any more plants but I’m not sure I can resist the FOMO.
