Is Cartis influence on the current underground overrated or do the “oldheads” have a point

Seen this tweet on my timeline and I actually agreed so I was surprised to see the pushback in the replies but what do yall think?

Obviously not EVERY underground rapper is influenced by carti but a lot of the top up and comers definitely are

u/AntelopeOdd596 — 8 days ago

Genuinely why didn’t this make the album?

We know cartis a dickhead but normally i’m able to see why he would or wouldn’t do certain things (musically) but why did this not make the album??? I genuinely can’t think of a reason

Ken gets no credit for being a pioneer

there’s 3 things prominent in the current rising scene Edm/electronic, hyperpop, and rage music and ken incorporated all 3 into his music years before it became what it is today yet gets no credit. Like realistically slayr is a extension of ken’s project x sound but no one seems to credit ken for these things. even in the distorted rage scene (osama che bleood 2slimey etc) ken is the one who took the distorted rage music to new heights with agc.

Why is that?

Am i the only one that thinks he’s been a lil corny recently

Ik it’s his sub so yall gon be biased but between the fake accent being a opium groupie (u can chalk that to him making connections if u want) and him “pulling up to nines house with draco’s” (prolly didn’t) does anyone else think he’s been moving a little different this era in a bad way?

Even with the carti stuff it’s like ok damn near everyone in the scene is influenced by carti in some sort osama was influenced by his earlier aesthetic but now he’s even rapping like him with the baby voice and now he’s got the “atl accent” i’m just confused cus his fans like him for being himself but idk maybe i’m just trippin

Kinda surprised to see that Dani smokes

So he’s a leech that steals from black creators and also is now influencing his girl to smoke cigs. I wanna say she needs to leave him but he’s prob holding her down while she’s going through this hate train.

does carti have a sports agency???

Came across this guys page apparently he’s plays for Vanderbilt and carti follows him and he had a opiumsports hashtag in a old post

Is Carti the new Rich Paul and building his sports agency?

yeat is more experimental than che

I feel like people’s definition of “experimental” nowadays is how loud or abrasive the music sounds when in reality it’s doing something fresh and new as a artist

2093 vs rest in bass in perfect proof of this. 2093 was hated because it wasn’t what we wanted or expected out of yeat yet now it’s probably one of his most commercially successful.

Rest in Bass sounds like a updated version of whole lotta red which is a good thing of course but making rage music in 2025 is not boundary pushing at all. Even the new music he’s making using the mr krabs voice (which yeat did before him) on rage beats isn’t pushing boundaries as well

what do yall think?

I lowkey think even Carti is lost on what he wants to do next

It seems like he’s done with the mysterious gimmick but between the fashion and the new snippets/features it seems like he’s kinda trying things out and seeing what he’ll stick with

Ken doesn’t get enough credit for how innovative and influential he’s been this decade

I’m listening to ken’s older music and im realizing ken doesn’t really get enough credit for how influential he’s been this decade

Everyone talks about how influential agc was for the current underground scene with the distorted rage (rightfully so) but you could argue he did it even earlier on X with songs like freestyle 2 new and gems

Even with the songs shoot or songs like suicidal ken was using a deep voice on modern beats which has become the norm now.

I know since then people have taken what ken pioneered and taken it to new heights but I feel like when it comes to the current scene he’s damn near as influential as carti

is that too far or yall get what im sayin

With Xperiment and Broken Hearts 3 being ken and lones lowest first week sales since 2022 what do yall think the future holds for opium?

Just now seeing xperiment sold 42k first week and it has me thinking what the future for opium holds its looking like lone and ken have reached their commercial peak

most likely the same with carti unless he goes on another insane feature run and baby boi outsells MUSIC ( highly doubt that happens)

What do yall think the future looks like for opium? i think carti should sign newer guys to help boost his label because i wouldn’t say their on life support but the high they were riding on for a couple years is definitely starting to fade away

As someone who enjoys ken and lones music more than yeats, yeat might really be our last hope

I say the first part to say this is coming from an unbiased standpoint but it just kinda now dawned on me that hip hop is really breeding no new stars and there isn’t a definite one under 30 outside of youngboy who blew up almost a decade ago.

Ken and lone also blew up with yeat but it seems like they’ve hit their commercial peak already and anything they’ve done after 2023 hasn’t really seemed to take off with the exception of agc deluxe in 2024.

Even though the same could be said about yeat id argue that isn’t the case because even ADL that was massively hated seems to have 2(?) hits (back home and i think griddle??). his ep last year had come n go which performed very well also

side note i wish ken wasn’t so lame when it comes to yeat because if they collabed more who knows how up they coulda went.

Does anyone else also feel this way or do yall think more will start to emerge as time goes on?

Carti needs to lock in bro this is the worst video ive ever seen

to think he’s overrated is fair i mean it took him only 3 albums and 1 mixtape to sell 300k lol people are bound to feel that way

but to say he isn’t legendary then post rappers that are extensions of him??? doesnt that make it objectively false?? a big part of legendary status to me is impact and carti is one of the most impactful ever.

this is like saying kanye isn’t legendary because he became the worst person possible after 2021. Like yes it’s bad but it doesn’t erase what he did for 15+ years

What do yall think?

u/AntelopeOdd596 — 1 month ago

why doesn’t carti rap on these ethereal typa beats anymore??

I feel like deep voice carti would be more appreciated if he rapped on more interesting beats because maybe this is a hot take but some of his best rapping ever is with the deep voice

u/AntelopeOdd596 — 1 month ago

Is it a hot take to say che is not the trendsetter people make him out to be??

i think he’s more so one that sees what’s hot and adds his own little twist to it whether it be the tiji shit or the electronic inspired trap music or the new stuff he’s doing with rage

all of those things were trendy when he did it he just adds his own twist to stand out.

am i tripping?

Listening to the new pluto and man.. I unironically prefer MUSIC to most mainstream rap albums since it came out

it seems like the mainstream isn’t interested in putting out fresh sounds and only dropping stuff they’ve already made before. Between drake kendrick future ye uzi yb yeat ken and thugs most recent works (all the big dogs in mainstream rap) MUSIC is unironically the most interesting sounding one even though it’s considered uninteresting for carti and his worst work (2 takes i agree with)

Anyone else share this same sentiment?
