Studio Arrangment

Hello all!

I’m curious. Do a lot of you guys have a mixer off to the side of your desk? I know it’s more so standard to center the mixer with the monitors for better sound comprehension. Am I really do myself a disservice by have mine to the left of my desk? I was thinking of putting it directly where I sit so I can just spin around and work the mixer as I’m centered with my monitors. I find I don’t hear much out of my other side when I’m actually there using the mixer. The reason I’m asking is because I’ll have a couple of inches between my chair and this table that the mixer is sitting on.

I was also thinking of moving my side rack here directly behind the chair up against the closet door if I don’t get my mixer there for better access/sound communication between my monitors and ears. My room is about 12-14ft wide by about 14 feet long. It’s not a big space at all but I want to utilize what I got. The left closet door can get blocked as seen in the photo here but I would prefer to keep the right door accessible for storage/other studio stuff. I have about 7” of table that extends behind the mixer, so I could look for another table that is strong enough to hold this mixer, but then I’m looking for that.

Please don’t hate on how messy it is. I’m literally in the middle of cleaning it all up, plus I just got new gear, etc.

Thoughts and opinions please!

Console Help

Hello all. UA’s AI screwed up my entire routing in the Console. I need someone who is down for a video call with me on messenger or what’s app or something. AI runs me in circles and opens I’m given for email support isn’t concluding my issues.

Expanding x6 To Additional Channels.

Hello all! So I'm wanting to expand my outputs on my interface to 16 additional channels. I'm currently running an Apollo x6 and Logic Pro.

I recently got two Arturia Audiofuse X8 Out interface expanders. I have connected both ADAT outputs to the expanders and I have all 16 channels connected directly into my mixer via snake cables. I'm unsure of where to go from here as I'm confused on how to work the console a bit and I'm not seemingly finding videos to help me out on this. Is there anybody who could help me on this? So theoretically, I am looking to have the 16 channels go to my mixer and then bring it all back through my input on the interface. Hoping to run multiple channels out into my mixer and bring it back as one. Drums, would be a prime example of sending out 6 channels and bring it back as one recording track?

Maybe I'm not understanding this fully. The Console seems to be a little confusing at this point of adding so many additional channels. Doesn’t anybody have experience with the interface, console and Logic that could help me?

MPC Sample

I see a lot of videos of producers with their Samples.

My question is, did you just hop on board because it’s a new MPC or is there something valuable in the Sample that you don’t get with your Live or your X/XL?

I’m curious. The machine looks very like a mini version of the Live or X. What is the point of buying a Sample if you own any other device? I’m curious on your opinions of the matter.

Been Looking For New Artists To Work With.

Hey all! I go by FreshSmoke.

I’m a music producer, beat maker and audio engineer. I’ve been on the hunt for a few new artists to work with, whether it be collabs or other work. Can be an exchange of services like a verse/hook for a beat, mixing or mastering.

I have over 12 years experience in the music game. I’ve worked with lots of local artists and am needing to expand my networking. If this is something you’re interested in, don’t be shy to comment below or send me a dm.

Much love and respect to you all. 🙏

New To The Sub!!!

Hey all! I go by the name of FreshSmoke. I’m a music producer, audio engineer and a beat maker. I’m getting back into the game and wanting to extend my network to new artists!

I’ve been making music for over 12 years now and continue expanding my studio and skills passed what I’ve attained thus far. I just started up my BeatStars page that I just got up and running again. Will be starting to work towards uploading fresh, new material again. I’m waiting on a couple pieces of gear to pick up next week to connect my new 24 channel mixing console!

I don’t want to drop links on my first post and feel like I spamming y’all to my music. If you’re interested, I can definitely link you some stuff depending on your source for music.

Where To Go For Music?

The title is pretty vague so I will elaborate here.

I am music producer, audio engineer and beat maker. I currently reside in Mackenzie but am looking for new opportunities to network and build with local artists. I have over 12 years experience in this music game. I moved from down south in Abbotsford about 4.5 years ago now. Where would I go to network and build with others? I know there is a decent music scene in the city and I’m just looking to work and build. I’m a very easy person to get along with. I just love building whether it be collaborations, contracted work or even just paid gigs from song to song basis. Is there a sub or even an outlet that promotes this sort of thing?

Thank you all in advance. Much love y’all!

Multiple Patchbays

Hello all!

I’m putting this out there to see if any of you have a setup where you have 5-6 patchbays. Everytime I see these patchbays, they’re always half full if that. Their studio never seems to have enough rack gear to coincide with the amount of patchbays seen.

Is this producers/engineers using one patchbay for mics, one for mixing, one for mastering, etc? I use mine for everything and just make sure my patch cables are in the correct jack.

Optical Audio Cables

Hey all!

I’m about to order a pair of Optical Audio cables to extend my outputs from my interface to the mixer. I am thinking that all of that signal will just come back through the main outputs of my mixer and through my patchbay and back into my interface. It’s how I have it currently hooked up. I’m waiting on my two expander units and snake cables to come in. I’m wondering what cables are better or worse from Amazon. I have hardware gear but no $100k studio.

Will it make that big of a difference if I order a cable for $13.99 on Amazon vs. buying from some more expensive reputable brand? Just curious to see what’s up. The cables I am thinking of buying have an average 4-5 star review from customers.

New Gear Not Available

Anybody else been seeing certain gear not being available through the manufacturer/distributor for months to come?Theres been a few pieces of gear and even cables that I cannot get in for a minimum of 3-4 months. Anybody else experiencing this right now and does anybody know what could be the cause of several manufacturers being low on much of their stock?

1/8” Jack Stuck Inside HP1 Port.

I just went to take these jacks out as there was cat hair all in between the knobs and it was easier to do this that try to work around the headphone jacks too.

It’s an Apollo x6 interface and I clearly want to do this the best way possible. I’m sure some of y’all have been lucky to have this happen, what was your go to with damaging or sending in for repair? I get the jack is done for but I’d like to keep the port alive and well.

XLR vs. TRS

Hey all! Just a question for everyone.

I’m about to expand my ins and outs big time and I’m wondering if it’s better to do all XLR to TRS then to have half of my cables as TRS to TRS. It’s a little cheaper and saving $80 on cables.

So has anybody experienced a difference between your signal going through a mic input (XLR) or through a Line input.

Pairing an Apollo X6 with another brand.

If I was to pair my X6 with let’s say, Behringer or Focusrite, would this be a significant difference in quality of sounds if all I’m using the second interface for was more ins and outs?

Drums on the MPC X.

Am I just retarded or can I bounce out my drums as stems instead of a whole track? I seem to only bounce out my stems as an entirety instead of what I normally did with bouncing it all out separately when going to mix. That was not using the MPC and using drums within my DAW.

Apollo X6

So, I just picked up an Allen & Heath mixing console. In order to route my drums as kick, kick, snare, clap, hi hats, crash, etc., then have channels for synths, bass, etc., is my only option to get a secondary interface to bridge them together or buy an interface with more ins and outs?

I’m getting back into music after a bit out of it and I’m really hoping I don’t need to buy another interface, haha.

It’s a 24 channel mixer. I’m looking for 16 of the channels to be solely for mixing, and others for the mic, effects, etc.

I see I can get the gen 2 X16 for only $200-$300 more than the X16 heritage edition. I mainly have all of the plugins I want for mixing or mastering anyway, so having more plugins from UA than I already have doesn’t really entice me.

Just got my first mixing console!

I found an Allen & Heath GL2200 for $150!!!

It was used in a church since 2003. It will be used for my home studio now. I know it’s not the most ideal setup for a home studio, but it’ll do great!

I currently have an Apollo X6 interface and so with that, I will have about 7-8 channels that’ll be free from anything. I’m about to learn how to connect everything to this console and see if I can make it all flow smoothly. I feel I should get a secondary X8 to bridge with on my current one or just buy a X16 or something. I also feel that is entirely overkill on my setup as is. I do have nine pieces of outboard processors/interface. I have a patch bay and four power supplies to power it all.

Any suggestions on what I could do with these other channels? I also feel it would be hard to pass up for $150. All works as it should from what the guy told me. I also bought it on the other side of the country and hauled it home with us on our way back. 😅🤷‍♂️
