I’ve been noticing something in the Darjeeling–Kalimpong hills, especially in the villages, and I’m curious what others think.
More and more locals seem to be leasing out their land to outsiders (mostly people from mainland areas) to set up homestays, lodges, or tourism businesses. On one hand, it’s understandable, tourism brings money, jobs, and opportunities that weren’t really there before.
But at the same time, I can’t help wondering what this means in the long run. These villages were always close-knit families, relatives, and people from the same community living together, sharing culture, language, and traditions. If this trend continues for years, do you think these places might slowly start losing that identity and begin to feel more like any other commercialized town?
Is this just natural development and something we should accept, or is there a risk of cultural dilution and loss of community control over land?
Would really like to hear perspectivesespecially from locals or people who’ve seen similar changes elsewhere.
