Soaking UHR

Got the 555 UHRs home yesterday and first job was proper pre-soak measurements:

Waist — 22.4”
Front rise — 12.8”
Inseam — 35”

They’d already been hemmed from 37” to 35”. I’ve only got really short legs anyway and wanted enough length left for the big Japanese cuffs I’ve always fancied but never had the balls to try.

Bath time! Hot water, fully submerged, no agitation, with a few jugs and bowls holding everything under the water. I did briefly forget to turn them inside out because excitement apparently overrides instructions but caught it quickly.

An hour later: drained, hung outside in the shade and left to air dry. Once fully dry, and genuinely the CRISPIEST fabric I’ve ever handled , I measured again:

Waist — 21.8”
Front rise — 12.5”
Inseam — 34.2”

So roughly:

0.6” off the flat waist
0.3” off the rise
0.8” off the inseam

All in all not huge numbers, but you can definitely feel it.

I then set the cuffs: 6” folded up, giving me an approx 3.5” finished Japanese cuff. They look a little big but I’ll wear em a while until they loosen up and settle before I decide whether to have more off in length.

Obviously this is only what happened with my pair, so your mileage may vary, but if you’re sizing, hemming or preparing to soak some UHRs yourself, hopefully it helps.

First time pre soaking denim

Over the last couple of years my weight and body shape has changed a fair bit and as a result it would appear my jean cut has too. Been a firm fan of the low cut IH 777’s as they went under my belly and wore at the hips. Now I don’t have as much belly I’ve been trying higher rises and honestly the comfort level is night and day. Went a tried on a few things today and the 555 cut seems to be the best for rise for my shape. I’m aware that the ultra heavy raw is looking like it might not be restocked so decided to take a punt on it. I left the inseam way longer than it needs to be (I’m a measly 27.5” inseam) as these could shrink up to 2” in the soak. Had em hemmed at 35” and will see where we are when they dry and if I need a bit more off I’ll do that.
Have measured to compare post soak so am interested to see what happens here.

Happy with the pick up, kinda sad to be saying goodbye to two pairs of 777 but it’s for the best!

Finally got some cargos

Finally got some cargo’s! Had all but given up on my search for cargos / fatigues as they just don’t seem to make em for the bigger boys. Found this pair of IH whipcords the other day in the Reloved section so got them a nice little bit off retail. Best part, they’re like they were made for me 42” waist 27.5 inseam. Will continue my search for fatigues another time, these will do nicely for now!

Links help

Hi all, I’m in the uk and bought a secondhand aviator a couple weeks ago. I popped it on a leather strap and all was well. Decided I really wanted to try it on the bracelet but didn’t have to tools to swap it over. Took it to a local Timmons as I know the guy there and he’s a watch nut. He swapped the bracelet out on 2 seconds flat but then when we were resizing we ran into a weird problem. There were two spare links in the box but when he went to fit one it became apparent they the spare links were a different size than what we needed. See pic 3 for the mismatched link. The spare links can only be fitted in the first few links from the clasp so it’s not like we’ve got it in the wrong place. They just seem to be 20mm (same as the ones by the watch head) and not the 18mm down by the taper! Anyone heard of anything like this before? What’s the best way to get a 18mm link for this bracelet please. If anyone has a part number or a recommend on where I can get one in the uk that would be great! Thank you

Marine nationale

Bought this FKM last week, it came on a bracelet but I’m always kinda in between sizes with bracelets and can never get it how I want it to fit. Similar story with NATO’s as I’m in between holes. Marine nationale sounds like it could be the ticket! All good so far!

Chambray & Linen

We seem to be flying straight into another little heat wave here over in the UK. Heavy denim won’t cut it so adjustments must be made!

Yesterdays fit was -

Chambray shirt, my first ever, has proved exactly what chambray fans have been telling me all along. It’s light, bright and airy, and I like it a lot!

Linen shorts, I could do with finding some that fit a bit better as these feel a little big if I’m honest! If anyone has any recommendations for shorts I’d be super appreciative, I don’t wear em often and as a direct result feel like they’re a weak spot for me!

Love em or hate em Bostons on the feet and that’s me done! Hope everyone’s having a great weekend

First Hamilton’s

So after a few weeks of looking for my first Hamilton (I was set on the FKM) but couldn’t find one at a decent price, I managed to find this aviator auto at a steal. Of course, as soon as I bought it, the exact FKM I’d been looking for magically appeared! And at an also very agreeable price. Long story short, they both arrived this morning. Both on bracelets that need adjusting, so have gone with nato / Velcro until I can mess around with the bracelets.

Super impressed with both, and for the money I paid, I’m going to be keeping both, at least for the foreseeable future.

Aviator was £325 on bracelet full set.
FKM was £400 on bracelet, full set with watch gecko nato thrown in.

It’s been a long time since I wore anything other than a Garmin so am looking forward to getting some wrist time with these. Thanks for the info and inspo in the weeks leading up to me buying these! Combo of Father’s Day & my birthday next month so the family helped out on the costs!

First time buyer

Looking to pick up my first Hamilton in the next few weeks. 8” wrist, usually wear a Garmin for work so would only be wearing the Hammy at the weekends, maybe some evenings. Quite fancy the 38mm FK on a nato, but thinking 42mm might be better due to wrist size.

Any suggestions welcome, thanks

Making the most of a bit of rain

Was taking advantage of a bit of rain to help shape the new denim. Enjoying a quite animated phone call and the bemused wife looking on laughing!

Just look at the colour of that jacket under natural light!

In other news, the pants are new to me (secondhand dubblewear moleskin carpenters) and they are far too long, was just giving them a run out. Am gonna bust the sewing machine out this weekend and have a pop at hemmed them myself. Any pointers welcome folks!

Mail Drop

Just got home from a 24hr shift, tired, cranky, fed up and just wanting my bed. Was just about to crawl into my pit when I got a notification of a parcel needing picked up! Needless to say I’m feeling a bit better about today now!

This thing is something else. My first SDA piece, it feels like chain mail right now and the slub is the heaviest I’ve seen on any denim yet. The colour is hard to capture especially in my kitchen where the light isn’t great, but it’s like a muted purple and looks amazing in the flesh.

I fancied this jacket but didn’t think I’d be able to bag one due to timings etc. a friend of mine managed to grab this and (fortunately for me) when it arrived it was too big for him. He randomly messaged me last week to ask if I was in or if he should send it back, I thought well it’d be rude not too eh!

I’m planning on giving it a cold soak as it’s stuff as a board right now so will do so on body wear pics a little later on.

Fleurs de bagne chore

Evening folks!

Had a few errands to run this afternoon and as the weathers took a turn here in the uk it was a cracking excuse to chuck this lovely blue moleskin chore on. Picked up direct from the Fleurs stall at the heritage post trade show last month in Dusseldorf, I can see this one becoming a from fave.

The colour, cloth and fit are all (imo) absolutely perfect and I can defo see me hunting down more form them in the future.

Rest of the fit is a stronghold tee, IH 777’s and the portage blue redwing Mocs. Simple, easy & comfortable, just how I like it!

I guess I’m a hat dude now

Hey all!

Back from the heritage post trade show in Dusseldorf, might have got carried away and got a hat (or a titfer as we call em here in the uk!)

Leaning into the amekaji look that I like so much here.

The clothes -

Jacket - IH Type 2 - been after one for ages but could never track one down, even being 5 mins from IH UK. Found in a delightful shop in Cologne called Kentaurus.

Tee - Hens teeth Italy x heritage post race show souvenir tee

Jeans - IH 777’s

Boots - My new Trumans, waxed Java, am slighted obsessed with these right now!

Hat from Diefenthal & Sohn in Cologne

Hope your all well folks

First pair of Truman’s

My first pair of Truman’s.

Being in the UK some of the big USA boots are hard to come by so I was literally over the moon when a friend gifted me these earlier in the week. He’s an absolute legend and I am truly in love with these.

Am absolutely buzzing, had to share
