Do people ever try to immediately pay their ticket with you?
Like when you give someone a ticket, do they ever pull out a credit card or cash and try to hand it to you and ask how much?

I was reading an article in the NY times
Two Syrian men who worked in Assad's regime were found guilty in Austria for brutalizing pro-democracy Syrian protesters and given 8 year sentences each. Their crimes included torture and sexual violence. Coming from the US context, 8 years to me seems fairly short for what they were found guilty of. You can get 8 years here for multiple DUIs in some states for example, or possession of various types of drugs. DUI I think should be taken more seriously here but it's not on the level of participating in the crackdown and torture and rape of detainees in an authoritarian regime, particularly one as brutal as Syria under Assad. I remember a month or two ago seeing a video clip of an 18 year old in Texas getting a 25 year sentence for robbing a convenience store.
I feel like had they been tried here, both would have faced many decades in prison if not life sentences flat out. Do you think US prison sentences in general are too long? Or should other countries, like Austria, increase prison terms to more so match the US?
Like someone getting aggressive on a flight, or a bar fight etc.?
The NY DMV has this on their website:
Your New York State driver license will be suspended if you fail to answer a ticket for a moving violation in any state except Alaska, California, Michigan, Montana, Oregon, or Wisconsin. Your license will remain suspended until you answer the ticket.
Drivers from any state, except those from the six states listed above, will have their driver licenses suspended in their own state for failure to answer a moving violation in New York State.
The New York State DMV does not record out-of-state convictions of moving traffic violations of New York State non-commercial licensed drivers, except for traffic offenses committed in Canada
I'm curious what this policy looks like in practice and if anyone here can provide data points. It would appear that if you get a ticket in another state so long as it's nothing crazy like DUI, if you just pay it, the NY DMV ignores it.
I'm wondering, has anyone here gotten a ticket in another state that they just paid or did not plea down all the way to a non moving violation, did anything show up on your driving record? Also, even if nothing showed up, did your car insurance find out about it and raise your rates? I know sometimes car insurance companies have their own systems. It would be good to know definitively if you get a ticket out of state that you don't need to spend money getting a lawyer or wasting time negotiating out something.
Jake Lang - who is a convicted but pardoned January 6th terrorist, has been going around the country to various protests and town hall meetings and spewing actual anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant bile. Even going so far as to vandalize property and assault people, leading to him being arrested several times in various states including Texas where he was arrested on separate occasions for trespassing and making threats. As part of his bond conditions, the judge in Texas ordered him banished from Texas except to attend court. It's fairly common to have geographical restrictions on defendants as a part of bond, such as not returning to certain locations or not leaving an area. However, I haven't heard of anyone being flat out banned from a whole city or state before. I guess it does make since if someone is coming in your community and being an absolute menace to society to kick them out. I'd rather they just hold Lang without bond.
What's your thoughts though? Should criminals be legally banished from certain cities or states for crimes?
Ukraine, 4 years into this invasion now has a thriving domestic weapons industry largely focused on drones which Russia has not been able to keep up with. In fact, it's now so successful that Ukraine is not dependent on Western weapons donations anymore. The main thing they ask for now is money to invest further into their weapons industry. The one exception is patriot missiles. Ukraine has developed these interceptor drones that work for taking out Shaheds and Russian FPV drones and aircraft. However, Ukraine is still largely vulnerable to ballistic and hypersonic missiles which are much harder to take out. Patriots are able to intercept these. The problem is due to Trump's Iran war, there is a huge shortage of patriot missiles in the world, and the US is unable to build them at a rate which keeps up with demand. The US needs more for the Middle East and possibly Taiwan, while Ukraine needs them to defend Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv and other cities.
Zelensky has used the opportunity to lobby Trump to grant him a license to produce patriot missiles in Ukraine. The main issue of course would be espionage. The patriot system is arguably the best air defense system in the world, capable of taking out even hypersonic missiles which Ukraine has done several times. The US has a reason to keep such technology restricted. However, I think Ukraine more than understands the importance on keeping such technology classified. Ukraine's intelligence service has more than proven itself with numerous assassinations of senior Russian military personal, and counterintelligence. Also I'm sure Ukraine would be able to mass produce them fairly quickly. I think it's a good idea, what do you think?
President Zelensky in 2024 created the "Unmanned Systems Forces" as a distinct branch of the Ukrainian military, focused specifically on drone warfare. Since then, Ukraine's drone campaign against Russia has by and large been a success, and Ukraine is now easily the world's leader in militarized drone warfare.
The Iran war clearly exposed the US military needs to invest more in drone warfare to stay competitive. Ukraine is managing to destroy Russian logistics and make up for the manpower difference with drones. Iran managed to hold out against the US with drones as well which cost a fraction of the munitions the US use, and can have the same result.
You didn't have enough evidence and they refused to consent to a search, or said they were going to remain silent.
The amount of hypocrisy on the "Christian Right" is insane. You have people like Ken Paxton who basically break everything Jesus taught, and has scandal after scandal, yet he and all the other Texas politicians want to put the Ten Commandments in classrooms which I think is absolutely disgusting. I wish Democrats would fight back more against Christian Nationalism so I say let's hold them to the Bible. If Ken Paxton or any of these other "Christian" politicians commits adultery or lie, they can then be arrested or sued.
So I moved here a couple weeks ago. My current license is about to expire so I want to swap it for a Pennsylvania one. Only problem is I'm going back home for a couple of weeks and I noticed on the website it says you'll get a 15 day interim license and get the regular one in the mail if you've never had a PA license before. Is it at all possible to get a regular PA license same day if you're new? I don't care if it's Real ID or not either, I can always get a Real ID later on. I just don't want to be without a license for my trip.
I know it's basically O'hare Airport, but what are the shifts like and overtime opportunities? Also overall work life balance there?
To me that seems like a great point to hammer in about Trump. He always projects himself as this strong man who is all about "action." Trump is so weak he literally lost a war to Iran, now we're dealing with sky high gas prices and inflation again because of it.
MLB introduced a system called the "Automatic Ball Strike" system which is a series of cameras and a computer program that automatically photographs and analyzes pitches in relation to the strike zone. It used to be that balls and strikes were 100% the umpire's domain, and players would be thrown out of games for trying to dispute calls. Now MLB with this new system has changed the rules. Batters, pitchers and catchers can now dispute balls and strikes and each team gets two challenges a game. If a player wins the challenge isn't deducted. It's proven very popular and I've even seen umpires challenging their own calls in baseball games now. It does reduce the need for umpires though, and I could see a few decades in the future umpires might not be needed in place of AI. What do you think?
So I recently moved to Pittsburgh from out of state and went to the DMV to swap my license. I thought they printed them on the spot but they gave me a 15 day license for a security check, and said they'd mail one to me once they're done. No problem, however, I'm going out of town for a couple weeks which means I won't be able to get my new ID when it arrives. I usually have the post office hold my mail and pick it up when I get back so my mailbox doesn't get filled up, but I'm wondering if that's going to cause issues with the DMV? I know they can't forward licenses, but is it okay to put a hold on your mail if a license is coming? Will I be able to pick it up or are they going to send it back to the DMV? Just trying to avoid a headache.
So Trump has been on a rampage trying to put his portrait on anything he can. First it was national park passes, then he announced the State Department would be issuing a commemorative passport with his portrait on the inside cover. Now it looks like he wants to get the treasury to introduce a $250 bill with his face on it. The whole thing is so absurd. Putin doesn't even put his face on Russian money. Would you support some type of legislation banning it?
I've seen it on many people's lists lately, what kind of port is it? I can't imagine there's too many international flights.
Surprised to see Arizona carried out an execution a few days ago, despite having a Democrat in office. I thought it was pretty standard for Democrats to oppose the death penalty in this day and age. Gavin Newsom in California has put a moratorium on the death penalty. Virginia under Dem. Gov Ralph Northam flat out abolished the death penalty. There are moratoriums in place in Pennsylvania and Oregon, and both have Democrats in power. Biden right before leaving office commuted everyone on federal death row's sentences except for 3 mass shooters and terrorists. Seems like Katie Hobbs is the real outlier. Every other state pursuing the death penalty regularly have Republicans in power.
This morning, Lithuania issued an air raid alert for Vilnius, forcing everyone to seek shelter as the Lithuanian military detected wayward drones heading for Lithuanian airspace. Estonia and Latvia recently issued air raid alerts and scrambled jets after a jammed Ukrainian drone flew into their air space, forcing a jet to blow it up over Southern Estonia.
The largest recent incident took place around a week ago when two jammed Ukrainian drones attacked oil storage containers in Latvia, forcing Latvia's defense minister to resign. Ukraine alleged that Russian jamming redirected it to attack those oil containers.
If Russia is actually using jamming technology to get drones to fly into or even attack the Baltic countries, that's quite an escalation considering these are all NATO countries. It's also a gray area considering the drones are from Ukraine, and not directly launched by Russia. Russia's UN ambassador at the same time is alleging Latvia is helping Ukraine's drone campaign, and even went so far as to suggest they're letting Ukraine launch drones from Latvia too.
So if you don't follow the Ukraine war too closely, a few days ago, Russia attacked a UN aid convoy consisting of white SUVs with massive "UN" letters on the side with drones. This convoy was delivering aid to civilians in Kherson when it came under attack.
The UN released a statement:
"The Secretary-General is alarmed that a United Nations vehicle was struck twice in Kherson city in Ukraine on 14 May.
The clearly-marked vehicle was part of an inter-agency humanitarian mission, led by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, that had been notified to the parties well in advance.
The United Nations is working to establish the full facts surrounding this incident.
The Secretary-General reiterates that international law, including international humanitarian law, must be respected at all times. Civilians and civilian objects, including humanitarian relief personnel and objects used for humanitarian relief operations, must be respected and protected at all times."
The problem is, it's not simply a mystery attack with drones of unknown origin, Russia literally took credit for it. A Russian military Telegram channel released a screen recording of the attack and accused the UN of transporting Ukrainian soldiers around Kherson which we all know is BS. In the video, you can clearly see "UN" written on the SUVs. I'm not going to link it here but you can easily find the video.
I have to wonder though, what is there to investigate? Russia is literally bragging about attacking the convoy and released a video, yet the UN can't even name who did it and is acting like they don't know anything. Even António Guterres, the UN Secretary General, tweeted out that he was "Alarmed that a clearly-marked UN vehicle was struck twice in Kherson city in Ukraine this week." Well who did it? If you're that alarmed why don't you call out who did it?
I used to have a lot of respect for the UN, but we've known for years the UN is incapable of preventing wars or bringing them to an end, but has the UN seriously reached the level where it's unwilling to do the bare minimum to respond to direct military aggression against itself? It honestly feels like the UN has become a totally powerless, irrelevant organization like the League of Nations at the start of WWII. I think it needs to be totally overhauled and rebuilt from the ground up.
So it looks like Bill Cassidy in Louisiana is going to not make it into the runoff and will get replaced by a more hardcore MAGA Republican. In Texas, it looks like Ken Paxton is going to win the runoff and defeat John Cornyn. In Indiana, several of the State senators who voted against gerrymandering were voted out in favor of more hardcore MAGA candidates. Not that I'm a John Cornyn or Bill Cassidy fan in the slightest, but if MAGA is as unpopular as people say it is, and if Democrats are projected to win big in November, why isn't that bleeding over to help more moderate Republican politicians? It seems the way you get elected in a Republican primary is to become as MAGA as humanly possible. You would think if Trump is pushing a lot of conservative voters to the Democrats, they'd vote for people like John Cornyn and Bill Cassidy but that's clearly not happening.
