Baldinucci Pizza Romana’s new location opened today 🍕🇮🇹

Grabbed a slice of chicken parmesan pizza and some gelato on opening day at Baldinucci’s new Domain Northside location. It’s on Rock Rose where Salvation Pizza used to be. This is an immediate upgrade to the last place. Their Roman style recipes are my favorite pizza around and now I don’t have go across town to get it in Westlake. That location is currently closed for expansion and I saw all the same faces working in the new shop. Which is good because they are wonderful!

Right now the menu is identical to the original store but they will soon roll out new pasta entrees and deserts. I’ll be back!

Tortilla Fried Queso Catfish at A Little Shady and chatter of a Shady Grove reopening 😳

I slid down to A Little Shady in Kyle on Saturday night hoping to relive my most memorable Shady Grove meal from 20+ years ago.

Good news is the tortilla fried queso catfish is on the menu and I’m told the recipes are still the same from the Shady Grove kitchen. I remember the filet being bigger and more queso-drenched but that could just be nostalgia on the brain. Regardless, it’s a comforting, tasty plate. That crust still has a knockout crunch and the Mexican corn/twice baked potato sides are worthy sidekicks. Too full for desert, maybe next time.

Speaking of the Shady Grove, staff I talked to said the goal is to use profit from the new restaurant to restore and reopen the original. So hopefully that works out for them. Was told it’s at least a couple years from happening. Maybe we can get back together on Barton Springs Road by 2030.

Lake Austin HEB’s $6 panuozzo - the pizza sandwich 🍕🥪🇮🇹

Saw a sign outside HEB’s South Flo pizza shop in the Lake Austin store for a $6 panuozzo and gave it a try.

Never seen panuozzo on a menu and had to Google if it’s a legit Italian item or something marketing came up with. So this was a little food education if nothing else. Wiki said it was invented in 1983 near Naples, so not old world Italian but it’s got history.

Liking arugula would be a good reason to try this and I love arugula so that was a good start. I got all veggies in mine + mozzarella w/ balsamic glaze - you can pick from any of the toppings including the meats to fill it out.

I enjoyed it. Crust had a firm toast so it held together well eating it taco style. Nice cheese pull on every bite. Six bucks doesn’t buy more than a slice most places so I will give HEB a fist bump for a good option. 👊

Tried the HEB Panuozzo - for when you want pizza, taco, sandwich all at the same time 🍕🌮🥪

Saw a sign advertising a $6 Panuzzo at the South Flo pizza shop in the Lake Austin HEB.

It’s a fold over, build your own fillings from all the topping options. I went with several veggies and the balsamic glaze.

Pretty good, had a nice melted cheese pull. I ate it like a taco. I suppose you could slice it to share or eat in smaller pieces but it held together well on its own.

My Whole Foods is pumping out Frozen Grocery Bags like crazy - and they’re good ❄️🛒

Whole Foods in East Austin has has been dropping a lot of $6.99 Frozen Grocery Bags lately. I saw an additional 5+ bags drop Thursday morning and have seen quite a few more than usual available this week.

I thought maybe it would be a bunch of the same items getting phased out of inventory but everything in my bag tonight is different - seven items.

I had to do a deep dive clean of my freezer to fit everything in and dug out a package of frozen rice with a Best Before date of 2017. 🤦‍♂️

I’ll try to do better this time. 🍚

Hopes and predictions for Spurs opening night and Christmas Day games 🎁❓

We’ll get firm schedule dates later this month. Until then what do y’all want to see and predict?

I’ll go with opening night at home vs. Minnesota and Christmas Day at home vs. Denver.

The Spurs opened the last three seasons against Dallas. Man it was fun seeing Wemby stick it to them from the jump last season.

That said I can’t see the Spurs playing Dallas for the fourth straight year on opening night. There’s no precedent for that is there? Hosting the new-look T’Wolves sounds like a fire start to the season.

We’ve also played on the road the last two Christmas Days so it feels like the Spurs turn to be home. I could also see us playing Dallas or Houston on Christmas. Cuts down on travel time for everyone involved. But the Denver matchup vs. Joker is nice star vs. star game for those big holiday ratings.

FIFA World Cup merch on clearance 75% off

Saw several stacks of World Cup caps on the clearance racks at my favorite HEB location, Lake Austin Blvd. Caps are $5 and $7.50. Also saw a $30 tumbler for $7.50. Guessing other stores are clearing them out, too. Anyone seen other items?

Texas French Bread lunch special 🤠🇫🇷🥖

I was about pull into Cabo Bob’s by UT when I remembered Texas French Bread is back open and across the street. So I detoured in to check it out.

It’s a beautifully restored space with lots of natural light and a nice variety of seating options. The person at the counter said they just started serving lunch on Monday.

Got the $16 TBF lunch special: half sandwich, soup or salad, chips and salsa & a cookie. At 2pm they were out of cookies so I was given a choice of muffins. Went with banana chocolate chip. Fantastic. Felt like a free upgrade.

I picked the Nicoise sandwich and tomato soup. Wonderful. I had to eat about half the tuna salad filling with a spoon cause it overflowed the focaccia upon handling but there are worse things than too much tuna.

It was a lovely lunch, I’m glad they’re back.

Bao’d Up, $4.99 “Ugly” Bao Mystery Pack (Austin, TX)

Nice selection of 6 “ugly” buns from Bao’d Up. They usually sell for $2.75+ each so for $4.99 the Mystery Pack deal is pretty good.

I liked trying an ube taro bun for the first time. Other flavors include spicy brisket and chicken teriyaki. 😋

The last Austin area Hooters is out of business 🦉🪦

Drove through Round Rock tonight and noticed the Hooters on I-35 was dark and empty.

Sign on the door said they closed “as part of our current efforts to focus, revitalize and strengthen the Original Hooters brand…”

They lasted many years with Twin Peaks across the highway but I’m sure the recent opening of Rowdy Cowboy nearby didn’t help what business they still had. Not to mention the Pluckers up the road for wings.

Hooters is kind of a relic of the road side in Texas. I also drove by empty locations in Waco and San Marcos all this week.

Suggestions on what to use Red Beet & Cabbage Kraut with? From Whole Foods Refrigerated Grocery Bag 🫜🥬

From tonight’s Whole Foods Refrigerated Grocery Bag (Austin, TX - Domain).

I’m guessing this fermented kraut is too strong to eat on its own. Can’t say I have much experience with an item like this. Will try my best to keep it from wasting.

Ratings for new places no longer require at least 10 reviews

For as long as I can remember new places on TGTG didn’t show a star rating until at least 10 reviews were submitted. I’ve seen two new places this week that already have average ratings listed with a few as 6 reviews. I wonder what the threshold is now; maybe five reviews?

Thought this $45 value bag from Radius Butcher & Grocery in Austin might be skimpy until I checked to see that Amazon sells these Vandy Classic Potato Chip 5oz bags two for $29.99. So it’s at least a $15 product retail. Wowzers.

Glad I got to try it as I love pretty much all chips. I’m only disappointed that it doesn’t taste much different or better than what I usually eat. It’s beef tallow-fried, ancient crunch, Herbs de Provence, all that jazz. Best by date was 4/18/26 so it must not be a hot seller. Someone called this place our neighborhood’s Erewhon. 😆

Add in the $15 Smoked Fish Dip and Bacon Jam, looks like it hit $45 on the mark. 🎯

This was a really good meal for $4.99: steak, sautéed greens and a shredded potato cake topped with an egg. Chef’s kiss! 🥩 👨‍🍳 💋
