No AC at hospital - Baylor Scott & White Round Rock

I have a friend in the Round Rock Baylor Scott & White Round Rock hospital. She's telling me they are turning the air conditioner OFF at nights so they can proceed with construction.

This just seems .... wrong. Where can it be reported?

Commute inquiry

Is 35 really as bad as 183? I’m still learning my way around Austin as I am still new to the area. Currently live in Leander and considering moving to Round Rock, haven’t decided on a complex yet but my top picks are past the round rock outlets like on Westinghouse. GPS tells me the drive will be 10 minutes closer, to my job which is in North Austin any suggestions on apartments or input on the commute? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Edit to add :) I work in the Domain and work typical 8-5 schedule so I leave at like 7 am daily

Restaurant review: Frank and Margie’s hit target with new Round Rock spot by Michelin starred chef

You’ve gotta give it up to the chef duo of Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee. When it comes to empire building, they can’t be beat. Their flagship Sushi By Scratch has a Michelin star and the man has been on Top Chef among other cooking shows. He and his wife are rockstars of the restaurant industry without a doubt. If you’ve not had the decadence of...

What is a historical story or fact that you think is interesting about Round Rock?

I have lived here all my life and I somewhat recently learned about the Immortal Ten Bridge’s story. It makes me wonder what else I don’t know about this town I call home. Here’s a link to the Wiki if you don’t know the history either!

Little brother considering joining Austin PD — any advice I can give him! (Specifically from officers in Austin, Tx)

My brother is considering trying out for Austin PD and I wanted to see if anyone here has advice, things he should know going in, or things you wish you knew before joining.

Would love honest feedback on the hiring process, academy, culture, work/life balance, pros/cons, and whether you’d recommend it. Any tips for preparing physically or mentally would be appreciated too.

Thanks in advance!

Got hail, east of 35 by Sunrise/University Blvd

I'm not going out there to look, my door faces the direction of the storm :) Can definitely hear the tell-tale ice plinking on the windows.

New in town

Hi,

My name is Chad. I'm moving into Hutto tomorrow, 5/20. I'm coming all the way from Coeur d alene Idaho, and have never been to Texas before; I'm here due to circumstance so other than my friend I'm moving in with and my Dog- I have no one in the area and the closest family is over 2200miles away.

Hoping to make some friends and build a new life here-

I'm 33M, love books, gaming (board/video), festivals, live music, trivia and a bunch of other random shit and open to new experiences. Im an open book, a nice guy alone on hard times, and desperate for a sense of community.

Hit me up if you're interested, or feel free to shoot a comment if you have any suggestions for groups in the area/places to go with the intention of meeting new people.

Thank you-

Texans say AI boom sounds like a 'washing machine' that never turns off

Texans are talking about how ridiculously loud these AI data centers are.

Story below (also in link and not under any paywall)

****

By Macy Meinhardt

As Texas races to become the largest data center market in the world, another side effect of the boom is beginning to draw scrutiny: relentless noise pollution.

In Brazoria County, residents living near a Giga Energy computing site around the Sloping Acres neighborhood say a constant industrial hum has disrupted daily life for months. Several neighbors have compared the sound to an enormous "washing machine" that never turns off.

One nearby resident recently wrote on social media that her family had "spent years to be where we are today," only for "an AI data center to come in and ruin our peace."

"We can't even sit on the back porch without the constant noise," resident Kimberly Fortenberry wrote, criticizing what she described as an ineffective "sound wall" installed near the site.

At just six acres, the Brazoria facility is relatively small compared to the massive AI campuses planned elsewhere in Texas, but it foreshadows the growing quality of life concerns data centers will face as they expand close to residential areas.

"The data center that was put near our home in Brazoria on 6 acres has been mentally and physically exhausting. The noise rattles you to the core 24/7," wrote Melissa Burnett.

Why data centers are so loud

Unlike normal office buildings, data centers operate around the clock and require extensive cooling mechanisms to keep thousands of servers from overheating. Those systems generate a constant mechanical hum that can travel hundreds of feet beyond facility boundaries.

"When operating, data centers emit sounds from the humming of cooling systems and air chillers, the rumbling of diesel generators, and the whirring of fans. Together, these sounds can be heard for hundreds of feet around the facilities," according to a recent report on data center noise from the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.

Beyond simple annoyance, the report also states that surrounding residents have reported headaches, vertigo, nausea, sleep disturbances, ear pain, and hypertension from prolonged exposure to the constant noise.

The Virginia warning Texans are watching

The phenomenon is not exclusive to Texas. In the past few weeks, noise from data centers gained national attention after a video capturing the eerie "hum" noise outside a data facility in Virginia went viral.

Currently, Virginia is home to the world's largest concentration of data centers, with cities such as Ashburn being dubbed "data center alley." However, by 2030, experts estimate that Texas will overtake Virginia as the world's largest data center market due to its lower land costs and energy access.

Texas is building even bigger AI campuses

One of the companies helping drive that expansion, Vantage Data Centers, is already constructing what it describes as its largest campus yet outside of Abilene.

The project, known as "Frontier," will span roughly 1,200 acres and will eventually host 10 data center facilities equipped to produce up to 1.4 gigawatts of electricity.

By comparison, the Frontier campus in Texas will be more than 23 times the size of the facility caught on camera in Virginia and will emit nearly seven times more electricity.

And if smaller facilities are already generating complaints loud enough to go viral, some Texans are beginning to wonder what happens when the world’s largest AI campuses fully power on.

TAG program

This might be the wrong sub or a weird topic or whatever. But is there anybody here that grew up in RR and was apart of the TAG program for gifted kids?? What are your memories from elementary school and the program?

Looking for rentals in Paloma lake for July move in

Hi all, we are from out of state and relocating to round rock hopefully Paloma lake. My wife will be teaching at Herrington and I’ll be WFH and dreams of a walking commute to school for her and our daughter.
Currently the Zillow inventory is bone dry and we were wondering if anyone knows where else we can find some leads that may help us land a property in time for the start of the school year
Thanks

Dentist/Eye Doctor Recs?

Hi all! I moved here not too long ago and am needing to start setting up with new doctors, mainly a dentist and an eye doctor. I prefer not to drive into Austin when I don’t have to so would love to be able to keep these in the RR area. Any recs? I use a fairly common insurance company so not too worried about having to find someone based on that.

Track Round Rock’s biggest projects, from new homes to an Amazon delivery station

Long considered a bedroom community for Austin, Round Rock — like much of Central Texas — has recently seen dramatic growth. With a population of around 142,530, it is ranked 30th among the state's most populous cities, similar to the size of Waco and Abilene.

With officials saying Round Rock is only halfway built out, there is plenty of room for the city to grow even more. Here are some of the biggest projects underway to give residents new places to live, work and play.

Looking for Part time work

Hello everyone, hopefully looking for suggestions on finding some part time work during the week.

I already have two jobs working for UT Austin 40 hours M-F (7:00am - 3:00pm). And another job working Saturday & Sunday total of 24 hours. (Overnight Job) 6:00pm - 6:00am

Its becoming super rough working 7 days a week. Im finding it super difficult to spend time with family and complete regular errands.

Ive been looking for local businesses that are hiring but it’s been a challenge. Google has not really been to much help. I’m looking for something flexible for M-F anytime after 4:00pm - 10:00pm.

So I could hopefully free up my weekends for family.

if anyone has any recommendations please message me or post below.

Thank You!

Michelin-starred chefs bring pizza and pasta restaurant to Round Rock

Chefs Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee are no strangers to Italian food. The married couple operates the Michelin-starred Pasta | Bar in the Los Angeles area, and ran a location of the tasting menu restaurant in Austin for about four years.

After closing the Austin location of Pasta | Bar earlier this year, the chefs have pivoted to a more casual expression of Italian food for their forthcoming Frank and Margie’s in Round Rock.
