Hi, I’m an incoming freshman and I was wondering what materials i should bring to be prepared for classes. high school was really just:
is there anything else i’m not thinking about? or anything on my list that I may not need? any advice from personal experience is appreciated. thx
Rule 3 says no crusading. Is this referring to the actual crusades or is it some slang im not aware of?
I used to be blanket against AI but i know that’s not how we should see things so i’m just sharing my thoughts on AI and how it should be used. I’m still trying to figure out how I feel about AI so any feedback/criticism is greatly appreciated.
One person I know suggested that AI can be useful in the middle of the creative process, where the original idea is yours but AI helps you execute it, and then you refine it at the end so it’s not entirely an AI construction. I think Hank had a related point about how AI increases efficiency in things like coding which leads to use-cases that we never could have imagined or created without a lower barrier to entry in that field (I believe this was in the Jevons Paradox video). I think this is a solid way to use AI without feeling like “AI slop” because there is people involved in the process, and AI just makes it easier to get done.
One thing I feel strongly about is that AI shouldn’t be used to make art. I think a lot of people see art as just a product, so they don’t care whether it was made by a human or by AI. But i like to do a kind of literary analysis where I spend some time with a piece of art, whether it be a painting or music or literature, and find the small details in it that a person chose to include. I like to think about the people behind the art and imagine that every little design choice was intentional, which I think goes away with AI generated media.
In regards to designs for companies and such where it is treated as more of just a product than stand-alone media, it seems like it makes a little more sense to use AI, but I know that this is where a lot of the artistic jobs are and that people closer to those fields would be more against it as a job security thing. There is a creator I’ve been following recently, James Barnard, who made the logo for the Humans podcast. Watching his videos about why he includes certain details in a logo and how he goes about the creative process for his job has made me a lot more aware of what designers do and has made me more anti-AI in this area.
As for Hank’s recent AHA video, I largely don’t think the backlash is reasonable. We know that Hank, as a science communicator, is not just going to pull his script straight from AI and that he does actually do research; and his videos have not felt “more AI” to me because he’s still the one talking to us in the same way that he always does. I don’t know how many of you saw the tweet that was shared earlier on this sub where Hank explains how the phrase that was flagged got in the video but he makes it clear that that was not a product of AI, it was just him. If you didn’t see that, I can understand how you might feel like he was just reading off an AI script; but if you did, that phrase being in there is a perfect example that the videos are still Hank’s videos, and they still have his quirks in them.
Sorry if this is confusing or feels like I’m rambling. I just saw all the hate for Hank using AI and I wanted to share my thoughts. If anyone has any other insights, I’d love to hear them. As I wrote at the beginning, I’m still working on building my opinions about when and how AI should be used so I’d love to hear from people who work with AI, feel threatened by AI, or just have another perspective. lmk what y’all think
In the most recent episode of Humans (with Andy Weir), Hank talks about how it would be nice to have a news channel that only shares the good things going on rather than all the bad things. I think a lot of you would appreciate such a thing so I’d like to share the yt channel Good News (yeah that’s what its called) where they literally just tell us all the good things that happened at least once a month
here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/@Good__News
I think in a world where all the information is at your fingertips, you’ve gotta make a deliberate choice to find the kind of information that’ll keep you healthy
Please read before downvoting. I’m not saying that I’m entirely opposed to a sequel, just really cautious about it. I think the movie left off at a good point that doesn’t really give me an idea of where they might go with the sequel and I’m worried it will suck. And also recently I’ve just felt like sequels to some movies that I’ve really enjoyed just don’t give me the same feeling as the original and I would be sad if this ends up the same way. That’s not to say I’m opposed to them creating a sequel (i will absolutely watch it because I love this movie) It’s just something I am more worried than excited for.
But I /am/ all for the idea of prequels. I think there are a lot of areas they could build on with that (like the Sunlight Sisters, Jinu, Huntr/x before they met, etc.) and I’d love to see more of the characters that we didn’t get a lot of time to focus on in the original.
What are y’all’s thoughts?
TL;DR: I’m cautiously optimistic
I'm neurotypical and I started watching the show Atypical on Netflix and I'm just wondering if it's not a good representation of how autistic people think or act (idrk how to word this so pls don't downvote me for that). I watched the Good Doctor a while ago and I enjoyed watching it but I've learned that it doesn't really portray people with autism very accurately, so I wanted to know if this is going to be similar. I just don't want to get misinformed ideas in my head.

(I didn't know which content flair to put so hopefully this works)
In the episode, Hank and John talked about creating an annual prize and canceling it after they give themselves the first one. If they seriously did make an annual prize,
What would you call it?
What would be the criteria to win?
Who would you nominate?
I'm partially just curious about this idea but I also wouldn't be surprised if Hank made this an actual thing
I have an Indian name which isn’t written out well in latin characters, so english speakers struggle to pronounce it properly without me saying it out loud first. There’s an event I’m attending where they’ve asked me to write out my name phonetically so that someone else (who I probably won’t know ahead of time) can read it out.
My name in the IPA is i think /aːd̪i/. I’m not super familiar with IPA transcriptions so this might be off but my name written in Tamil is ஆதி. can someone help me with a phonetic transcription of this for American English speakers?
