Balancing load with deload

As a general rule, how do you balance your load and deload weeks when you train for a race? 3:1 ie 3 load weeks followed by 1 deload week?

I am creating a training plan for a 100 miler. It's topped at 65 miles per week (right before my taper phase) but I wonder if I am giving myself too many deload days.

What do you do in your training regarding deload?

Just ranting

I was brought up to keep my chin up and not whine/complain no matter what.

Yes I have been blessed with good health most of my life but 60 is now kicking my ass with a vengeance. I went from never seeing the inside of a doctor's waiting room to seeing a doctor once or every other week. It is so fucking demoralizing. My right ear is messed up, my left foot hurts when I walk/run/bike, I can't sleep and my memory that used to be absolutely stellar is now complete dog shit.

Getting old sucks.

Got this really cheap plus toy. Now Barney won't let go of it. Never mind the other expensive toys we got him.

FTP went from 175 to 212 in a year.

I'm a 60 yo rider at 86 kg. It's been a tough year with long stretches without riding but I have learned a few things in the process.

  • Skip the FTP ramp test Lite for the plain Ramp Test: it starts at 50 watts and increases by 10 watts every minute, whereas the plain Ramp Test starts at 100 watts and increases by 20 watts per minute.
  • My pedaling "technique"(?) was crap. I learned to make big circles (or ellipses?). This drove my cadence and my power output up.
  • During the test itself, I focused on the RPM of the interval itself instead of the power output.

I still have A LOT to learn but I'm happy where I'm at. I assumed it was all downhill from here. Happily proven wrong.

Happy riding.

Topo Athletic: gear question

Recently I noticed something that got me scratching my head.

I have a pair of Traverse (grey), a pair of Mountain Racer (blue) and a pair of gaiters.

On the Traverse, the hooks for the gaiters have a place to go in the front and the back. On the Mountain Racer, no hooks in the back. Only in the front…which won’t work.

What am I missing here? Is it a design decision on Topos part? That’s a bit weird…

Runners & Cyclists: be careful out there

I was on Paramount near Cover this morning on my run.

As I was on the Walmart side, a woman came out of a driveway doing maybe 40 mph, nearly hitting me. She screamed something at her car window and peeled off.

I got scared and yelled "fuck you" (that was wrong - I admit that). She stopped her car and yelled back "what did you say to me?". I saw her reaching for something in her car and yelled again "say that to me again, motherfucker" . I took off running thinking she had a gun. I heard her car drive in the opposite direction.

No, I didn't get her license plate. All I know is that she was a black female driving a white Mercedes SUV.

Just be careful running or biking.

Pacific Crest Trail

Weather forecasts overcast and cold in the valleys and 80 degrees in the high country. Went exploring another section of the Pacific Crest Trail near the Mojave desert (Mount Gleason, for the locals). I wasn’t disappointed 😌. Overall very runnable. 12 miles.

Pacific Crest Trail

Just finished 6 miles exploring the trail that goes from Mexico to Canada. The views are incredible 😀

Quick jaunt up Mount Waterman

I escaped to the high country this morning and followed upper west ridge from the 6000 ft trail head. More info here.

Really steep sections (poles recommended) but not difficult. UV was strong so long sleeves and hoodie.

Otherwise good day 😃

Nothing like spending the day in the mountains.

In case you’re wondering, this is the approach to Mount Waterman (near Mount Wilson) in Southern California.

Salt Flat Endurance Runs. Any info?

After a long hiatus, I signed up for the 100 miles of Salt Flat Endurance Runs, in Utah. The race is scheduled for April 30, 2027.

I am not finding a lot of current info such as race reports or even YT videos. My guess is that that race is a bit of a "sleeper" compared to more well-known races like Wasatch Front, Zion, Moab etc.

Has anyone here in this sub run the 100 miler? I would welcome any info you can share. Thanks!

Colonoscopy

I just had the procedure done.

The stuff I have to drink to clean my plumbing up for the prep was amazing. I just found the set of car keys I lost in 1972.

Seriously though, it sucks, it’s awkward, uncomfortable and that drug is disgusting but men, get it done.

It’s better to know.

Spent a day in the High country above Los Angeles

That was neat but the bushwhacking tired me out 😮‍💨. Roughly 12 miles total, starting at 7200 ft then summiting at 8500 ft before going back down.

Shots were taken with Meta Glasses. I want to apologize if they’re potato quality.

High Country / Waterman

I went on an adventure today.

First leg was Three Points to Waterman. Started at 7am. Tons of downed trees after mile 3 need walking around. And many, many washouts.

Second leg was from Waterman down Upper West Ridge. Then hop on Hwy 2 back to Three Points. Trail conditions were certainly better but the trail was some pretty steep spots.

Roughly 12 miles total. Got back to my car a little after 12pm. There was a “trail magic” crew set up at Three Points for PCT thru-hikers. They asked if I wanted to eat and drink but I told them I wasn’t a thru-hiker. Next thing I know I am sitting down while eating a sandwich and drinking soda 😂

Today kicked my behind 😮‍💨 but the views were amazing. And so peaceful. Tough but worth it.

Check out the “mandatory” (kidding) pictures I took with a pair of these newfangled Meta Glasses.
