Hi guys, I’ve been working on my copywriting and editing career for a few years now and have finally been offered a position with a good salary.

However, it’s basically a proofreading position for internal and external documents at a defense contractor company.

I’m very conflicted about this role. I’m not developing or building military tech, but I would be supporting a company that does, and I don’t know how I feel about that on moral or ethical grounds.

Has anyone been in a similar position? Am I being dramatic about my consent or participation in this industry or should I just play it safe and avoid this kind of work altogether?

What’s writing for defense contractors like?

My father was estranged from most of our family since 2018, due to his rapid descent into the MAGA culture. He was not himself the last decade, saying stuff to us and others that we simply could not allow in the household, especially with children around. It was not a pleasant situation.

We hadn’t really seen or heard much from him until a little over a year ago. He left his church and began exploring Catholicism. He bought me and my sister dinner one day and got a lot off of his chest.

He’s no longer a supporter of MAGA politics and I think he’s been feeling really guilty about being part of it for so long. I’m not really even sure I can call him a conservative now, though he still holds some rural small town sentiments about city people and the economy. My dad has a good heart, we believed him when he said he’s trying to become a better person, and as the weeks passed, he demonstrated it in his words and behaviors.

After some time, we’ve accepted him back into the family. He doesn’t like to talk about politics anymore, but when he does he’s very receptive of other people’s opinions and has agreed with more progressive things than he ever would have 10 years ago.

Sometimes when I hear him scrolling memes on Instagram he’ll stop and I’ll hear Pope Leo talking. He listens to that guy a lot, and it’s been very heartwarming to see him shift towards compassion.

I know politics are still messy, but this has been one of the most potent feelings of positivity and hope my family has had in a while.

TL;DR My father left the MAGAsphere and made peace with my family.

I recently bought a tarot reading from a wise woman that frequents my home bar.

Having told her a slightly embarrassing story to give context for my reading, she replied “That’s nothing compared to what some people have confessed to me.”

I didn’t feel it was my place to prod, but I’m curious what it could have been.
