The countries who operate them obviously expect them to do so, even in pretty hellish ASW environments like the Baltic and North Sea. However, I struggle to picture how an SSK would break off an engagement compared to an SSN.
While underwater endurance nowadays is impressively high, they can’t outpace surface ships like an SSN. Simply hiding and waiting seems like a poor option when you have every ASW aircraft in the region heading for your last known position.
Does this mostly come down to smart engagement selection and the longer range of modern torpedoes?
