Group from Moldova squatting in Brussels since 2022

Hi All!

There is a group of Moldovan Roma who are squatting in several different buildings in and around Brussels since 2022.

I attach some photos that were taken in public areas near their former occupied buildings.

From what I have seen and what I have read in the media and local facebook groups, this is not a poor refugee group.

This seems as a well organised criminal gang of Eastern European Roma. They have UK, French license plates luxury cars (Audi A8, BMW SUVs, Mercedes E-Class and all that) and some of them wear relatively expensive clothes.

Wherever they went, similar comments were present by the original residents of each area:

-       Stealing from local shops, break-ins in the area

-       Verbal and phyical harrassment of nearby residents, starting fights or simply mocking people verbally

-       Stealing metal cables

-       Causing fires (in Evere and in Oudergem)

-       Trashing in and around the building

-       Using building floor and nearby public area as a toilet

-       Usiing water, electricity and heating in an excessive manner and causing serious costs for the owner of the building, or the Belgian taxpayers.

While most media outlets won’t disclose the fact that these are basically criminals with Mercedes and leather jackets, I have seen them. I know that leather jacket and Mercedes are not a crime, but the question arises: why are Belgian taxpayers responsible for hosting people with French and UK license plates Mercedes, Audi and BMW cars?

As Moldova is not part of the EU and not part of the Schengen area, they should not be present in Belgium in more than 90 days. I also highly doubt that they are working or studying.

Also, minister Van Bossuyt went to Moldova in 2025 to discourage asylum applications from Moldova.

The best way to behave - in a balanced way

Hi!

I'm from Eastern Europe, male, 39. This September is going to be my second time in the Caribbean. Before I only did the ABC islands.

I am visiting Barbados in September. I read some coments all over Reddit and Tripadvisor around some rude behaviors, some directness, etc.

I would be very happy to know how to best approach the locals, what to expect, what to do and what not to do.

Please note that I'm happy to adjust and being from Eastern Europe I'm not expecting smiles 0-24, but also not looking forward to any kind of open hostility.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Weather chances in mid-end September

Hi All!

I have my time off booked, so my travel window is pretty much fixed, somewhere between September 12-30. I know that statistically this is peak season for hurricanes in the East/North Caribbean, however, there could be differences around which island will be hit (or not) and how severe.

What is the weather most probably like in this time period in St Lucia?

Is it stormy or rainy to the point that I should reconsider going to St Lucia at a different time than September?

Thank you in advance!

Lásd a kérdést a címben.

A lakásban nincs klíma, 28-31 fokos.

Lásd a címet.

A sivatagban például rendkívül alacsony a páratartalom.

All-males refugee center near Auderghem-Watermael border started to operate

Hi All!

A refugee center for 350 males for approximately 3 years has opened at Avenue Beaulieu recently.

While there were posts about the preparations, this post will be about the experiences of the operation so far.

First of all: it is very nice and supportable to help people from all around the world, however, the way this center was not announced/consulted beforehand by BelRefugees, the communication around it, the experiences of the same organisation in Anderlecht before, and the operations so far, are reasons for concern. The commune of Auderghem did everything they could in terms of preparations, but the center was rather imposed on us.

Context:

https://www.bruxellestoday.be/quartiers/un-centre-pour-demandeurs-d-asile-annonce-avenue-beaulieu-a-auderghem.html

https://openpermits.brussels/fr/_02/PFD/2022093

The former office building is owned by AG Real Estate and Atenor. Later they are planning to turn the building into a residential one, but until then, they let BelRefugees to operate in it which means a big tax advantage for the owners.

The problem of the local residents and the mayority of both local governments are the following.

- Both Auderghem and Watermel-Boitsfort are relatively quiet, residential areas with small population

- Imposing such a scale of operations without proper communication beforehand is definitely problematic. 300 single men, maximum 3 month stay per person will most probably mean that the temporary residents won't be interested in investing in or engaging in integrating to local society. The logistics and constant movement, noise around such a scale of operations is also something that possibly doesn't belong to an area a few meters from a quiet residential zone.

- There seem to be very few rules (if at all) for the residents. During the phase when there were some questions from the commune to Belrefugees, they informed about a daily time when residents will have to be back in the building, This was promised around 22:00. On various days, well after 23:00 (!!) there were people hanging around the nearby streets in gangs, some of them checking if bycicles are locked properly or not.

- A number of female local residents already informally reported that when they walk by (they need to walk by as they are living in the area), te residents of the refugee center are staring at them in bigger groups, which feels definitely uncomfortable.

- The area (private area) around the main entrance of the center is pitch black at night, there seems to be no lights, no security, no one enforcing rules, just people hanging around in smaller groups and going in and out. Seems a bit unregulated for such a scale.

- A very similar center caused several problems in Anderlecht, including noise, trash, aggression and human waste nearby. Even the mayor of Anderlecht was not comfortable with it. https://www.bruzz.be/actua/politiek/opvangcentrum-belrefugees-anderlecht-blijft-nieuw-alcoholverbod-op-openbare-weg-2026-03-27

By this, I am not stating that in Auderghem it will be the same, because this time everything may turn to be super smoothly integrating, I just think that as locals, we are entitled to have questions or worries.

Speaking about questions or worries: in the biggest facebook groups of Watermael-Boitsfort and Auderghem, the debate, until it was allowed, seemed to be very unhealthy. Some people were suggesting that the all-male refugee center is basically a Trojan horse, while others called each other "racist" by simply asking a question.

There was an example where someone literally asked "how long the center will operate and are there any advice for students attending the nearby Japanese school in terms of safety?" and the answer was: "you are islamophobic and I will report you".

What is next?

The leadership of Watermael-Boitsfort and Auderghem both formally expressed that they do not support the center in its current form. The Brussels Capital Region will make a decision on whether they allow the 3 years stay or it will be shorter.

Thirteen people residing illegally in Belgium squat in an empty building in Grimbergen

"Local residents reported to us that they saw several people arriving at a vacant building on the Westvaartdijk," says Alderman Philip Roosen (N-VA). "The police went to the scene and found 13 Moldovans there. They said that about 200 more people were on their way to the squat."

The police cannot enter the building for the time being. "We must follow a procedure here, whereby the owner must first file a complaint. According to our latest information, he will do so today, after which further steps for an eviction can be taken."

What moldovan authorities or news sites could I contact (in English)? This is a group that has been squatting since 2022 in Brussels and they make a huge fuss and pile of trash everywhere. They broke into at least 7-10 properties.

From what I have seen and what I have read in the media and local facebook groups, this is not a poor refugee group.

Auderghem Shopping, Chaussée de Wavre at night

Hi Fellows,

I live in Auderghem since 2022 and there is something that slowly grew on me and very gradually deteriorated.

Disclaimer: what I describe below is something I have seen gradually, and I did not watch it actively. I just couldn't ignore how the area changes. My purpose is to understand, if someone has any idea what could be behind this phenomenon.

This is generally a nice and safe commune with lots of green, the main concern always was the relatively heavy traffic passing through the two main axises (Boulevard Souverain and Hermmann-Debroux).

But, I realized, for reasons completely beyond me, that Auderghem Shopping, which is the crossing of Chaussée de Wavre and Boulevard du Souverain, has become a location for evening/night gang activity.

There are several dodgy looking guys, giving territorial and intimidating looks to other people, hanging out and not talking to each other, like they were guarding (or selling?) something. Just standing there for hours, and giving that nasty look to everyone who passes by.

The type of guys you would imagine seeing around Midi or Anderlecht late at night. The absolutely not-to-mess-with type.

And I don't understand this. Why would Auderghem be a location for them for hanging out, "business activity", or why would that be an important place so that they don't live there but literally hang out in 8-15 member gangs each and every night?

I know they don't live here because several times I saw that they take the bus 34 from the downtown area and commute all the way to Auderghem Shopping, for whatever reason.

This is an unpleasant crossing of two main roads. There is nothing. Why would it be the newest gang spot?!

Note that other streets, inner streets of Auderghem remain good and safe.

Ősfa irtás a mátyásföldi villanegyedben (Budapest, XVI. kerület)

A fák vágása engedélyköteles magánterületen is.

https://www.bp16.hu/e-ugyintezes/kornyezetvedelem-zold-felulet-kozterulet/fas-szaru-novenyek-vedelmevel-kivagasaval-0

Brussels housing question - your indoors temperature these days

Hi All!

During this heatwave, I'm curious of your indoor apartment temperatures and the situation of the apartment. I think this could be interesting to compare.

I live in Auderghem, close to a green area but also close to a main road... and the apartment is facing north-east. So I receive some morning sun. But even with the internal shaders, the temperature is what you see on the picture... Lovely! I don't have AC for the moment.

Homeless people at Guillemins - background story?

Hi All!

I live and work in Belgium since 2022. I do a lot of day trips on weekends, so I wandered in the country quite a lot already.

I've been to Liége at least 10-12 times, and I found this striking.

There are a lot, visibly native Belgian (Walloon) homeless people in and around the station. I feel quite sorry for them, sometimes I give a few euros or a beer when I pass by, knowing that one day I might be one of them (not a Walloon unfortunately, but a homeless, if I'm super unlucky).

Does anyone know what is the background story? How do native Belgians end up on the street in relatively big numbers especially at a young age? Because, on the other hand, I see there are a lot of accomodation and CPAS and help organisations, mostly for foreign refugees though.

But who are these poor guys? Aren't there places in homeless shelters, or CPAS? Or they apply but got rejected? In any way, I found this striking, even if I know that Liége has to deal some poverty in recent decades.

Thank you for any informative answers in advance!
