Moving to Qatar from Canada

My fellow Canadians who have moved from Canada to Qatar, do you have any recommendations for a checklist of things that should be done before leaving Canada? When did you declare yourself a non-resident, and how did you manage to keep your Canadian phone number to receive messages and OTPs? Lastly, do you have any recommendations for mail forwarding services?

On the other side, how are you finding life in Qatar? I’m moving there with my family of four, including a toddler and an infant.

Keep Canadian number

I’m travelling abroad and would like to keep my Canadian number mainly to receive OTPs and important text messages. Is there any reasonably priced or very cheap plan that would work for this?

A few people recommended Fongo, but I’m not sure if it reliably receives OTPs from banks and other services. From what I understand, they provide a Canadian number and also allow you to transfer your existing number for a one-time fee, which I believe is around $5.

Has anyone used Fongo for this purpose, especially while living abroad? Would you recommend it, or is there a better low-cost option?

Telecommunication recommendation

My apology in advance if this question has been asked before. I’m soon moving to Qatar and I need recommendation for the best company mobile and home Internet.

For the mobile, preferably, unlimited data and unlimited minutes

For home Internet I need at least one gigabyte speed

Between Vodafone and oredo which one has more stable connection and which one has better offers for families and customer service

Where shall i rent?

Moving from United States with family of 4 ( 9 months and 5 yrs ) , looking for 2 or 3 bedroom apartment. I’ve never lived in Qatar before so pearl and Lusail are very appealing, but I’m not sure if there are any different locations to consider.

Ideally, looking for an area that is serviced close to good ranking schools.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.
