Feeling lost about what direction to take as a designer. Looking for advice from people in the industry.

Hello everyone!

I recently graduated with a degree in Digital Production. Throughout high school and university I did a lot of graphic design, so I have experience with Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects (mostly for motion graphics and video).

The problem is that I'm not sure what direction to take anymore.

With AI changing the industry, it feels like many entry-level design jobs have become much harder to find. I still see plenty of design job listings, but most of them seem to be from digital marketing agencies, and it made me wonder if that's what the industry is now. It also made me question whether I even enjoy design itself, or if I just enjoyed creating things during university.

I'd love to hear from people who are actually working as designers.

- What kind of design job do you have?

- What does a typical day look like?

- Do you enjoy your work?

- If you were starting over today, what would you focus on?

- Is it better to specialize (branding, UI/UX, motion, packaging, etc.) or have a broader portfolio?

- What skills or software are companies looking for the most these days?

- What makes a junior designer stand out when applying for jobs?

At the moment, my strongest skills are Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects, but I'm willing to learn whatever would make me more employable.

I'd really appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thanks!

First 7 days!

Hello! I've been a smoker for about 4 years, the clock hits 23pm and there I am, w my friends(whom I live with) lighting it up. I've been trying to figure out for a long time, do I even like the weed itself or is it the interactions and things I do w my friends while we do it. Thing is at the beginning, I was functional while doing it, I could study, play the games, do my hobbies w great pleasure. But lately, my motivation has been totally off, I can't even bother getting to do anything while using it but binge tv shows, eat and js sleep. And It's been stopping me from growth in general I think. I've been away from my place and my friends for a week, and I think that's the root cause of why I'm even using it. I think to myself what else is there connecting me with my friends, and It's always been weed. So I decided to stop. I'll go back to my place soon and I'll tell them my decision. There were bunch of times where I'd say this but I'd go back to old habits. But last night I had a strong emotional dream, and It all points to the decision I made and growth. I need to believe in myself and stay accountable. That's why I came here to write this post, as a reminder not to fall back. :)

Does anyone else remember the locations from their dreams more than the dreams themselves?

I usually forget what actually happened in my dreams, but the places stay with me. Throughout the day, random dream locations just pop into my head, and I can remember exactly what they looked like and what they felt like.

It's almost like I have a map of places that don't exist, just stored somewhere in my brain. Some of them even feel oddly familiar, even though I've obviously never been there.

It's kind of creepy.

How do you people survive summer?

Seriously, what do you do when it's 36°C outside? Do you still go out during the day or just become nocturnal?

I pretty much avoid going outside from around 1 PM until 10 PM. If I need to do something, I either go early in the morning or late in the evening.

The problem is that staying inside all day gets boring fast, and it's one of the main reasons I dislike summer.

What's your strategy?

Is there a way to grow stomach muscles without traditional ab workouts?

Hi guys. I'm kinda having a hard time working my abs plus I'm never sure if they are engaged or I'm js using momentum(doing reverse crunch/leg raises etc). I do sit ups with 2kg, and can feel my core working but when i try anything else it just feels so weird. For example, when I try to do ins/outs I need some time to position myself on the floor plus most of the time I can feel my freaking tailbone and it hurts badly. So I was wondering is there any other way to do it without the floor? I don't go to the gym, but I train hard at home and this has been bothering me for a while..

Thankful for any advice!

How do you build video editing portfolio?

Hello! As the title says, I need advice on how to build my video editing portfolio.

When I was still in the middle school my passion for it kicked in and I was making bunch of disney AMVs on windows movie maker 🤣 then I learned Sony Vegas but since I wanted to do more advanced stuff I learned both After Effects and Premiere Pro. Now I have a solid understanding of motion graphics and animations.

I do have a degree in digital production.

My problem is the fact that the most videos I have edited are anime related/fan videos.

And I was wondering what type of videos should I make for my portfolio, and what do you guys use to show your work?

Like is it a website, google drive or something totally different?

So how do you actually get a job in this industry?

Hello everyone! I'm not sure if this is the right sub to ask this kind of question, but I'm a bit lost.

I graduated 6 months ago(graphic design), I made my portfolio in like 2 months and I'm still jobless. I keep applying to jobs over linkedin, twine,fb market etc, but either no one replies or someone does but it's either a rejection or I go into an interview and never hear from a person again..

On top of all this, I noticed, when I search graphic design jobs, most people also want you to edit their videos, have knoweledge of figma(?)and other ui/ux stuff, be into branding/marketing, and now I'm confused should I learn all of that to land a job since no one will hire me with js illustrator/ps/indesign experience??

Please any advice would be helpful!

I don't really have working experience apart from freelancing and internships I did.
