Was it ever explained how Strand physically works?

I know that by the nature of Paracausality, Strand defies physics.

But unlike the other elements, I haven’t seen an official source explaining how Strand actually works on a physical level.

Solar, Arc and Void are manipulations of the 4 fundamental forces, and Stasis is time dilation.

But with Strand, we are left with a vague statement that it’s a “Psychic power that manipulates the Weave which connects all things”.

Was there an actual explanation for the underlying phenomena regarding how Strand physically operates?

I know that as the Guardian, we were the ones to give it the shape of Strings, but how do these Strings actually form?

PS3 Controller Dead / Unresponsive

I was using my childhood DualShock 3 wired on my PC when it suddenly stopped working mid-game.

When I unplugged the cable, the LED indicator was still on (not blinking) so I pressed the reset button.

Now the controller won’t respond at all.
It does not flash red when plugged in (cable works with other controllers).
I have tried pressing the reset button when plugged into a PC/PS3 and tried pressing the home button to no avail.

Any ideas on what could have caused this? (Keep in mind it was working then it ‘froze’ mid-game).

Eclipse Energy causes retroactive implications

I do understand the narrative intent of Eclipse Energy was to introduce a new threat to Guardians/Players in such a way that it acts as a direct foil rather than a benchmark to overcome.

But the introduction of Eclipse Energy invokes a ‘Veil Situation’, in the sense that ‘this thing is important but has always existed’ and ends up causing more narrative issues than it resolves, with the crux lying in its availability.

From what is explained in-game and by lead writers, Eclipse Energy originates from causal forces (Dark Matter) and is ‘Antiparacausal’ and capable of killing Paracausal beings.

In addition, the Nine existed before the Traveller and can use Eclipse Energy as shown by the new Distortions event.

But if Eclipse Energy is this readily available and effective, why does Paracausality run so rampant, especially with whatever the Witness does?

Whilst the inner members of the Nine are opposed to usage of Eclipse Energy, surely the outer members should have used it protect themselves against the Witness taking it?
It feels like an ‘Idiot Ball’ situation where they simply forget they can do that.

Why haven’t the Cabal reclaimed Torobatl if Eclipse Energy is capable of countering Hive curses? Blast your planet with Eclipse Energy like a fumigator, as your planet should remain unaffected?

I understand the suspension of disbelief but Eclipse Energy will just end up causing more narrative problems than it should as a readily available blanket counter to any Paracausal problem.

Eclipse is 'Anti'-Paracausality Energy and the missing Darkness Element

Forewarning

Before you say "The developers explicitly stated Eclipse is Antiparacausal energy", claim I lack media literacy and dismiss this theory, consider the following:
The developers have intentionally created a Savuthun situation around Eclipse Energy, where we have intentionally been given paradoxes and half truths about the full extent of its nature.

There are too many loose threads left open for 'Eclipse energy' to simply be a separate 'Antiparacausal' force in nature.
Furthermore, following the final content update for Destiny 2, there were leaks from developers that we were supposed to get a new subclass around the time of Shattered Cycle / The Alchemist.

Established Darkness Element and Eclipse Information

We know little about the 3rd Darkness Element and only the 'core' details of Eclipse.

The information we have regarding 'Eclipse not being a Darkness element' is either from speculation (Micah-10 stating that Nightmare energy originates from an untapped power of the Darkness, not that Nightmares are the untapped power of the Darkness), unreliable narrators in-game (such as Tha'arak or Bael, who were gifted it, but cannot 'create it' itself) or contradictions from the developers themselves (such as Eclipse being stated as 'Antiparacausal' and turns the 'gas knob' of Paracausality down, but Eclipse Energy Distortions 'unravel the foundations of physics', a paracausal act).

Even though 'Eclipse Energy' was the front and center of the Renegades expansion, it was actually silently introduced in Edge of Fate, where enemies harvested it for generators.

A majority of what we know about Eclipse Energy so far comes from Renegades however.
It is a red/black energy described as being the 'Antiparacausal' in nature, countering and disabling the effects of paracausality both Light and Dark.
We see this when the Nightfall station fires upon the Tharsis Outpost and killing all the Guardians and only the Guardians stationed there, 'tearing their Paracausal soul apart'.

In terms of its source, it 'originates' from Dark Matter and is a 'product' of the Nine, gifted to Bael and the Barant Imperium to 'counter' Guardians.
Whilst a majority of Eclipse Energy comes from a reactor, it is shown that it is 'wieldable' by Tha'arak, whose uses it as a weapon against us in his encounter.

These statements should prove that Eclipse Energy cannot be Paracausal in nature, right?

Eclipse 'Paradoxes' Explained

There are two common arguments brought up to explain why Eclipse cannot be Paracausal in nature, let alone the missing Darkness element.

The first is that Eclipse is 'generated' by the IX through Dark Matter which Ikora states isn't Paracausal in nature.
The second that Eclipse can only affect Paracausal beings and its nature would not only instantly kill us, but be an ineffective damage type against regular enemies, such as Vex or Cabal.
The issue is that the game itself already contradicts this.

Starting with the issue with the 'origins' of Eclipse.
Eclipse comes from Dark Matter, which is explicitly stated to the Player to not be Paracausal, let alone Darkness-related.
Whilst its true that Dark Matter isn't Paracausal, it does act as an amplifier for Paracausal energies as during the Edge of Fate, we bind our Paracausal energies to Dark Matter to amplify them, such as Arc with Matterspark, Strand with Matterweave or Void with the Relocator Cannon.

'But the Nine cannot use Paracausality, only influence its effectiveness! They couldn't generate any new Paracausal energies to begin with!' I hear you say.
Also true, but the Nine don't need to create the initial 'Eclipse energy' to begin with. They merely need to source it elsewhere, which is highly implied to have happened in the Equilibrium Dungeon Lore, where some of Bael's forces retrieved relics from Nezarec's Pyramid, which is latent with 'Nightmare Darkness Energy'.
'Eclipse Energy' can very well be a purified form of Nightmare energy infused with Dark Matter.

The other core 'issue' is the potential effectiveness of Eclipse in a Guardian's arsenal.

"Eclipse only affects Paracausal beings! Eido survived the Nightfall attack thus Eclipse being useless in standard combat! Even if we tried using it against other Paracausal beings, we'd die instantly!". These are convincing showstoppers, but the issue is that we are shown this isn't true.

For starters, Eclipse Energy can very well affect the normal, Causal world.
The Nightfall Station rips itself apart firing Eclipse Energy when we destroy the Stasis reactors.

If Eclipse energy merely removed Paracausality as we are told, then it shouldn't have affected any Causal infrastructure of the Nightfall Station. But Eclipse energy clearly operated in absence of Paracausal forces, contradicting Eclipse as merely as a means of 'Paracausal Negation'.

Since it can clearly affect Causal things, this brings up the why did Eido survive and why was there no damage to the Tharsis Outpost outside of Guardian Final Deaths.
The attack was far too targeted, like Bael was picking and choosing Guardians as targets with the Eclipse Energy.

On the topic of those guardians, another inconsistency with Eclipse energy emerges.
Once again, if Eclipse energy is truly 'Antiparacausal', then it should only stop the effects of Paracausality.
Any afflicted Guardians should be rendered Causal or at the least, Lightless by it, similar to Zavala or Osiris. But Eclipse outright kills these Guardians ripping their Paracausal souls apart.
Do remember that the way to perma-kill a Guardian is overwhelming Causal force or opposing Paracausal forces.

Eclipse Energy is far too unstable and reactive to merely be a force that only negates Paracausality.
This is further proved by the MOT update.

Distortions, Nightmares and Dark Elements

The final content update in Destiny 2 gave us the Distortions event which gives us more exposure to Eclipse.
Upon participating in Distortion events and fighting Corrupted enemies, I noticed a few attributes and couldn't shake the feeling that 'Eclipse' is just coincidentially a red, dark energy that 'counters' Paracausality.

Starting off with a simple aesthetic coincidence, both Nightmares and Eclipse are 'dark red energies' that 'displace' and 'corrupt' individuals, whether it be spatial or temporal.

Whilst a reach, it is worth noting that 'Eclipse Energy' is classified as 'Kinetic' in the kill cam.
Whilst Kinetic tends to be the 'default' damage type, 'Dark Element' weapons also tend to be in the Kinetic slot.

But in regards to the physical, 'Dark Elements' aren't just energy, they tend to have a 'matter' associated with them. Stasis spawns Stasis Crystals, Strand uses 'Weave Matter' in Threadlings and Woven armour.
'Eclipse' happens to produce 'Corruption' Bubbles and create 'Strange Matter'. which is retrieved from defeated Corrupted enemies and nearby resources.

On the topic of the Elements, some Corrupted enemies gain an additional overshield to their Elemental Shield that show 'damage resist' numbers to ALL forms of Elemental damage whilst it is active and when broken, releases a burst of Eclipse Energy/Matter.
After that, their underlying Elemental Shield is vulnerable to their corresponding element.

Perhaps the most damning correlation is Eclipse Retaliation Seekers make the exact sound as Anti-Barrier Champion Shields.
What are Anti-Barrier Champions tied to? That's right, Nightmare Energy.
What happens when 'Corrupted' enemies and Champions die? BOTH VIOLENTLY EXPLODE INTO JAGGED RED VEINS.

Eclipse Energy embodies signs of underlying characteristics of Dark Elements beyond coloration, and a clear undeniable correlation between Eclipse Energy and Nightmares, which have been established as 'Darkness-derived energy'.

So with what we can glean about Eclipse, what is it truly?

The True Dark Nature of Eclipse

Let's analyse the statement 'Eclipse is Antiparacausal'.
It is a misnomer, because whilst it is true Eclipse does negate Paracausality, it has been established it can do much more than that.

It's more accurate that "Eclipse is 'Anti'-Paracausal"...

Eclipse Is The Dark Paracausal Force of Opposition

With this framework, it explains a lot.
Even the name 'Eclipse' suggests this, as An Eclipse is a Dark Shadow originating from two opposing bodies.

What is Eclipse Energy?

Eclipse energy is a Dark Paracausal energy that changes the polarity of things. It is the 'purest' Darkness Element and is the Antipode of Arc, the 'purest' Light Element.
Whereas Arc is change, Eclipse is resistance.

Why does Eclipse Energy negate Paracausality?

Because it causes Paracausal energy to clash against itself, ripping it apart like a Matter/Antimatter reaction.
It's why it goes further than simply extinguishing Paracausality, the Paracausal force is directed inwards and 'rips apart the Paracausal souls', obliterating itself and leaving no trace.

Why does Eclipse Energy affect normal matter?

Because as the Paracausal force of Opposition, it inverts Causality, creating Anticausal systems and unraveling the laws of physics, something that the Distortions have been stated to do.

Why was Eido unharmed by the Nightfall Attack?

Because despite volatile, Eclipse is Paracausal and like other Paracausal forces, the user determines what is affected. The same reason why Threadlings only targets 'enemies' is the same reason why Eido was unaffected, Bael didn't consider her an 'enemy' during the attack.

How can we actually wield Eclipse if it should kill us?

It isn't the first time we have wielded something that is a 'direct counter' to our Paracausality.
Stasis was thought to be as such until we learned to use it properly.
And Stasis and Strand both kill you when wielded wrong.
Eramis was frozen over from being unable to control Stasis, and we were unravelled multiple times when trying to forcefully use Strand.

Likewise, Eclipse would take a new mindset to wield properly and actually wouldn't instantly remove our own Paracausality.
It would at worse 'drain' us of our other Paracausal powers temporarily if we used it wrong.
This is supported by the fact that we don't permanently lose our Paracausality to small Eclipse attacks in Distortion zones and that it took an overwhelming blast of Eclipse energy to kill the Tharsis Outpost Guardians.

As a matter of fact, we may have even subconsciously used Eclipse in the past, during Season of the Haunted to return Nightmares into Memories, the 'inversion of inversion'.

What would it do gameplay-wise

Eclipse could be used to 'dampen' incoming attacks, drain abilities, create portals and modify projectile trajectory.

Conclusion

There is simply too much evidence left behind that implies Eclipse as a Paracausal energy itself.

Even though we aren't getting any more new content in Destiny 2, I do believe that Eclipse has a high chance as being established as the missing Darkness element somewhere in the future.

Even though it has been folded into Speed Cola in mainline games, I have been working on a custom Dark Aether variant of Timeslip Tonic for my map.

It just needs a few more decals and material touchups, alongside animations.
