Jeremy often rubs people the wrong way. I've never seen him go this far, though.
(DEAR MODS: This is about a man shitting on poor disabled people for not working harder and how that sucks and people deserve to be aware of it before continuing to support his show. Please do not remove it.)
I've loved this show from the first episode of the first season years ago. I can't continue.
After he said people receiving disability benefits should have to write a thank you letter to a random tax paying citizen upon receipt of every benefit check, I honestly have no idea what the fuck he thinks he's doing. That's kicking someone when they are in one of the worst socioeconomic positions of their lives. Shitting on someone who can do very little but tread water is bullying. And doing it from a position of wealth? As if he didn't have subsidized help for his farm? It's inexcusable. He came from wealth. He was a TV show host for decades. He now has a farm in the Cotswolds.
He had readily available healthcare. He had a near fatal heart condition that he was able to remedy in time. He had HELP on his farm. When he was told he couldn't work for a period of time? He had people to do it for him so his business didn't collapse. He got ready treatment for prostate cancer.
If a parent of disabled children, such as myself (also single) were to actually have the ability to work instead of having zero childcare options, a fight for inclusion in schools, and the ability to pay for housing on top of it, I'd be happy to thank whatever extra help I got, but as it is, I will NEVER grovel for what is pennies compared to his pay.
I'm in the USA. The federal asset limit for SSI is $2,000.00. If at any point I go over $2,000.00, the benefits stop until they are spent down to $2,000.00 or less. That changes if I EARN money, and I get to keep some of the benefits... but school gets out before 3 p.m. The amount of work I have to do to pay for the afterschool care would negate the extra money.
The federal asset limit was set in 1989. Every time there are words proposed to increase it, the they fail due to thinking just like Jeremy's. It's a very "don't feed the alligators" position that actually happened here in the states.
Jeremy said we are not even as grateful as his dogs. A man here in the states in the 90's actually called welfare recipients alligators. Don't feed the alligators. As if we are ravenous predators.
So thank who, Jeremy? And if it were you, would you mock me when you read the letter?
It is ironic to me that a show about farming and producing food and the comedy and the scenery are one of my favorite shows when I can't even afford fresh produce everyday. And then Jeremy shits on my existence as if I asked for it.
Jeremy, any day you can be disabled. Your own body has warned you twice.
If you ever find yourself in need of benefits, I'll be sure to leave you stationery and the funds to post your weekly letters of gratitude for your scraps.
Also, fuck you.
