Linguistic Bridges Across the Western Ghats: Kannada & Malayalam Cognates in Kongu Tamil (கொங்குத் தமிழ்)

Linguistic Bridges Across the Western Ghats: Kannada & Malayalam Cognates in Kongu Tamil (கொங்குத் தமிழ்)

Kongu Tamil, spoken across the Kongu Upland plains, is often celebrated for its distinct phonetic cadence, archaic honorific markers (-ṅka, -ṅko), and conservative grammar.

Linguistically, Kongu Nadu sits directly at the nexus of two major Dravidian crossroads:

  1. The Palakkad Gap: A 30 km natural break in the Western Ghats connecting Coimbatore/Pollachi directly to Palakkad, Malabar, and central Kerala.
  2. The Mysore Plateau & Kollegal Corridor: Centuries of shared borders, rule under the Western Gangas, Hoysalas, and the Mysore Kingdom, directly adjacent to Chamarajanagar, Mandya, and Mysuru.

Consequently, the Kongu lexicon preserves a fascinating layer of Proto-South-Dravidian retentions, areal isoglosses, and border contact cognates with Kannada and Malayalam that are completely absent or obsolete in standard Central/Eastern Tamil.

Here are some of the comparative cognates I can remember. (There are many actually)

Part 1: Shared Sound Shifts (Isoglosses)

  1. *Initial Vowel Shift (u- → o-) [Kongu ↔ Kannada]: Proto-Dravidian initial u- lowers to o- in both Kongu Tamil and Kannada:
    • Std. Tamil ural → Kongu oralu ↔ Kannada ಒರಲು (oralu).
    • Std. Tamil ulakkai → Kongu olakkai ↔ Kannada ಒನಕೆ (onake).
  2. Directional Suffixation with -kaḍe / -kaṭṭa [Kongu ↔ Kannada]: Standard Tamil uses -pakkam (அந்தப் பக்கம்), whereas Kongu mirrors Kannada kaḍe (side/direction):
    • Kannada ಆ ಕಡೆ (ā kaḍe) ↔ Kongu அக்கட்ட (akkaṭṭa).
    • Kannada ಈ கಡೆ (ī kaḍe) ↔ Kongu இக்கட்ட (ikkaṭṭa).
  3. *Retention of Proto-Dravidian Initial ā- [Kongu ↔ Malayalam]: Standard literary Tamil palatalized initial *ā- into *yā- (yāṉai, yāṟu), whereas colloquial Kongu and Malayalam preserve the archaic *ā-:
    • Kongu ஆனை (āṉai) ↔ Malayalam ആന (āna).
    • Kongu ஆறு (āṟu) ↔ Malayalam ആറ് (āṟu).

Can these companies set-up their R&D offices in Coimbatore by 2030??

I made a list by scrapping top campus recruitment employers from amrita university & psg tech (took past years double digit hires) & did a LinkedIn search for alumnus of either institutes + coimbatore + erode + karur folks & took the list of companies with more headcount.

Can managers, leadership people, HRs of Kongu native in these companies in Bengaluru take steps ?? C suite, investors?

You visit any tech park parking, you see many TN Kongu registration cars bikes parked in ORR. We have a huge volume of techies & legacy STEM institutes.

(PS: There can be some error bcz Amrita university includes multiple campuses. But that's negligible)

Fluorosis was common in my hometown & later realised it's due to Bad crystalline geology of Kongu belt. | Don't consume borewell water

Generally Kongu region sits on a hard crystalline rock terrain (granite & gneiss), the deep rocks naturally leach fluoride into the aquifers.

Whenever I gave a test, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) frequently far far far far exceed the safe limit of 500 mg/L.

Hydrogeological studies in this belt reveal that over 90% of groundwater samples fall into the "poor" or "not permissible" categories for human consumption. (Kangeyam taluk, Dharapuram Taluk, aravakurichi taluk)

Consuming this water will cause dental and skeletal issues.....

I gave a sample water to test in labs. It's highly saline, more fluorine, highly dissolved calcium and magnesium, etc

If you live in gram panchayat in kangeyam/Dharapuram/Palladam/Aravakurichi taluk that don't have any river water, it's unlivable there. !!

No amount of தீர்மானம் in கிராம சபை கூட்டம் works! !

Kongu Tamil & Mysuru Kannada :- highly polite slang with heavy use of honorific verb conjugations.

Already there are tons of post about cultural similarity of Kongu belt & old Mysuru region.

I am adding this one too

Tamil:- Instead of using the singular vā (come) or pō (go), polite slang Tamil uses the plural suffix -ṅga or full literary endings: vāṅga, pōṅga (Please come / Please go).

Kongu dialect is widely perceived by other tamil speakers as naturally gentle, soft-toned, and exceptionally polite. It softens commands and incorporates indirect phrasing..

Equivalent of that is Mysore & Mandya kannada which is widely regarded as the most sweet-sounding, standard, and polite form of the language.

It also relies heavily on honorific pronouns. For example, addressing someone formally requires shifting from the singular neenu (you) to the plural niivu (you), and appending respectful verb endings like -ri (e.g., banni instead of baa for "come").

From where these habits would have originated??

Periyanna Venadudayar: Legacy Freedom Fighter from Tiruppur district, Dharapuram Taluk, (Sankarandampalayam Chieftain)

Periyanna Venadudayar was a prominent Indian chieftain, political figure, and the hereditary Pattakarar (chieftain) of the Sankarandampalayam in the Kongu Nadu region of present-day Tamil Nadu.

Known for his fierce autonomy during the British Raj, he is historically noted for running an independent local administration in the erstwhile Coimbatore district, Madras state.

His entry into the Indian National Congress during the pivotal 1937 Madras Presidency Legislative Assembly election played a decisive role in breaking the pro-British Justice Party's dominance in Kongu Nadu.

Lineage and Title

Periyanna Venadudayar held the traditional title of 33rd Sankarandampalayam Pattakarar (Thenkarai naadu). The Venadudayars were historical agrarian chieftains of Kongu belt whose lineage records trace back to medieval times, with historical titles such as "Arthanari Venadudayars" granted during the Chola era. He governed the Sankarandampalayam region, an agrarian territory near Dharapuram, where his family patronized the Sankarandampalayam Rathina Moorthy Swamy Temple as their clan deity.

Administration and "Parallel Government"

Periyanna Venadudayar joined Congress in 1910s on personal invite of Sardar Vallabhai patel. He established many schools & humanitarian organisations in Dharapuram, Palani, Oddanchatram & Coimbatore.

During period of national movement, Venadudayar maintained significant regional autonomy. He is recorded in regional histories as a highly popular Kongu chieftain who successfully operated a parallel independent government within Kongu Nadu against coimbatore district collector. Without external support, he managed agrarian issues, resolved local disputes, and governed his territory in defiance of standard British administrative oversight (coimbatore zilla).

Despite operating outside the typical colonial framework, his localized influence and authority were so undeniable that he was appointed as the District Board Chairman of the Coimbatore Zilla. This was a massive administrative role during the British era that covered the vast territory of modern-day Coimbatore, Erode, and Tiruppur districts.

Political Career and the 1937 Elections

The 1937 Madras Presidency elections served as a turning point for both Venadudayar and the political landscape of the Kongu region. Prior to these elections, the most parts of southern India was politically dominated by the pro-British Justice Party, which was heavily backed by few wealthy landowners and Zamindars. The most powerful of these in Kongu region was the Pattakarar of Palayakottai (Kangeyam Taluk), who ran as an independent candidate with Justice Party support.

The Indian National Congress leadership, led locally by figures like K.S. Periaswami Gounder, recognized that they lacked the immense wealth and regional influence to defeat the Palayakottai Pattakarar outright. To neutralize this threat, Congress strategists approached Periyanna Venadudayar.

Venadudayar was a long-standing traditional antagonist and rival of the Palayakottai Pattakarar. Convinced by K.S. Periaswami Gounder, Venadudayar agreed to contest the elections in a neighboring constituency on behalf of the Congress to neutralize his rival's influence. This strategic move demonstrated to the agrarian electorate that the Congress party was not broadly opposed to traditional chieftains, but only those aligned with the colonial government.

The Adoption of Khadi

Bringing a traditional royal chieftain into the Gandhian nationalist movement required adaptation. Accustomed to the traditional fineries of a Pattakarar, Venadudayar actually had to be specifically reminded by Congress workers to wear Khadi during his electoral campaign. By donning hand-spun Khadi—the primary symbol of the Indian Swadeshi movement—and mobilizing his vast network of loyalists, he integrated the rural Kongu peasantry into the mainstream independence movement.

The strategy was a resounding success; K.S. Periaswami Gounder and other Congress candidates swept the regional constituencies, dealing a fatal blow to the Justice Party's influence in Kongu Nadu.

He passed away on Oct 17th, 1951.
