Practical shooting competition rifle?

u/EverySockYouOwn is looking for a way to lighten his 13 pound Socom for practical shooting competition... of course I am going to suggest the light weight Blackfeather RS Mod II chassis stock from M14EBR Team Precision

I like my Scout weighing in around 10 pounds, but you can configure one closer to 8 pounds.

A new addition to the family

I drove up to Greenville, SC to buy this rust free 2000 rear wheel drive Base regular cab long bed, it has the 3.4L V6 with an automatic transmission, cloth bench seat, manual windows and door locks. It currently has 183,000 well documented, mostly dealer serviced miles on it. It will be used by my mother to drive around town running errands... she drove it the 120 miles home without issue. My 2007 RCSB pictured on the left performed flawlessly up and back in 100 degree heat.

What was the driving force that lead you to vintage audio gear?

My story: If it wasn't for inheriting the Marantz 2238B receiver that my father bought new in 1977 and our Covid lock down era I can honestly say that I probably would not have any stereo gear worth mentioning, but the combination of the two events mentioned lead me to put together not one but two complete systems made up of vintage gear from the 70's, 80's and 90's.

I am very happy with the results and I plan to enjoy the vintage experience for as long as possible.

What's your story?

The Occasional Audiophile

My personal Vintage Audio web page.

Low-Fi ?
Mid-Fi ?
Hi-Fi ?

I am about to begin my 67th trip around the sun and my excellent sounding high fidelity two channel stereo gear consists of Harman / Kardon and Marantz receivers from '77 and '78, two sets of ADS speakers from '86, two Technics CD changers from '99 and two Schiit DAC's from '24. Total retail cost for everything I own was about $3,855.00 plus sales tax brand new... my hearing isn't the best these days but I hear well enough to receive great enjoyment from what I have, and I am constantly impressed by the sound quality my gear produces.

Marantz 2238B Restoration

The Marantz Model 2238B that has been in the family since my father bought it new in 1977 for $370 is currently undergoing a full restoration with updates including frosted LED bulbs and new speaker terminals. Here are a few images my tech sent over last night, there was nothing wrong with the receiver but it was quite dirty inside and it appears to have cleaned up well.

The History and Development of the USGI M14 EBR Trigger Shoe

Two previous iterations, Aluminum on the left.

Three previous iterations, Aluminum on the left.

Three previous iterations, Aluminum on the left.

2025

I hope you find this interesting and informative. The idea for a USGI M14 EBR Trigger Shoe came about in 2010 when TACOM-RI decided to address issues with the pull angle on the M14EBR-RI DMR rifles in SAGE EBR stocks equipped with pistol grips. NSWC Crane had already experimented with commercial off the shelf trigger shoes for their MK14 Mod 0 and Mod 1 and found all of them unacceptable.

The first prototype USGI shoes produced for testing were aluminum, they worked but TACOM-RI determined steel would be better for their M14EBR-RI builds. The steel shoes were supposed to be issued on the ARMY M14EBR-RI, but the only military rifle to receive them was the NAVY MK14 Mod 2 because production of the ARMY rifles had been accelerated and installing the shoes would have slowed down delivery.

The current USGI M14 EBR Trigger Shoe came out in 2025, it is a result of product improvement and refinement. It is meticulously machined from billet steel for a tighter fit, all sharp edges have been eliminated and the shoe is given a hard salt bath nitride finish.

I have attached pictures over the different versions leading up to the pinnacle of achievement that is available today.

I'm changing things up. I had planned on having the tech that fully restored & upgraded my H/K 730 go ahead and restore and repair my H/K 430, and then sell my Marantz 2238B... over the weekend I decided to have him fully restore & upgrade my 2238B, his payment for this work will be my H/K 430.

Speakers are ADS L570/2's and L980/2's

What do you think of the new plan?
