Modern 8x57 corrosive ammo resistance testing

We built 16.1" 8x57 barrels for the Savage thread pattern. They are 416r stainless with a salt bath nitride coating. This particular rifle is going to get shot starting next week without any cleaning as a torture test.

We'll update on any corrosion that does occur as time and round count progresses if there is interest. None is expected, but we'll see.

Sidenote: a 16.1" barrel with WWII German s.S. ammo clocks at 2400fps, which is much less velocity loss than expected. A suppressed it is suprisingly quite a gentle recoiling setup and the sound is very pleasant.

[PARTS] 8x57 Suppressor Ready 16.1" Barrel - Savage Small Shank (308 also available $249.99 + SH)

When we're not shooting rimfire, 8mm Mauser has always been a favorite cartridge around here. We've had a strange side quest come to fruition -- an 8x57 production barrel for receivers that take barrels with a Savage Small Shank thread pattern. The 416R stainless with black nitride resists corrosive ammo quite well (but you should still clean your barrel).

Some of the surplus ammo is quite accurate stuff with modern barrels and optics -- stacking shots of cheap 85+ year old Turkish or German ammo just hits a bit different. The 16" barrel suppresses quite nicely and heavy ball (196gr) surplus runs ~2400fps.

We made a 308 version as well.

This just started happening one day around 6 weeks ago without any changes to the site, and we're not able to chase down what is causing it.

PSA that ChatGPT can give bad advice (across the board, not just on AR22 questions)

Here's what ChatGPT spits out when asked how to tune an FRT for use with a CMMG conversion kit. A customer called thoroughly confused and sent this in to us.

We've got a robust technical video library and resources page. We'd recommend sticking to our instructions before asking AI how to do it.

Resources: https://borebuddy.com/resources/

FRT Specific Guides: https://borebuddy.com/frt-super-safety/

Video Library: https://rumble.com/user/BoreBuddy

Trigger Guide: https://borebuddy.com/guide/about-frt-triggers/

Barrel length and ammo tuning guide: https://borebuddy.com/guide/about-frt-triggers/

We're currently feeding all our tech pages into ChatGPT to attempt to help the algorithm give better advice since it's a heavily used system for questions like this.

If you decide to ask ChatGPT a question that is highly technical, we'd suggest including a link the the guide for the question you're asking right in the prompt. This will help keep the system from generating absurd advice like the above.

Came across an SA-85 sporter locally that is nearly new (~300 rounds through it with little to no finish wear). What are they worth in 2026?
