Not every photo backup needs another monthly cloud subscription

I use cloud storage. I like the convenience.

But after years of photos and videos piling up, I started asking myself:

Why does my second copy also need to live in someone else's cloud?

Sometimes I just want to plug a drive into my iPhone and keep a physical copy that I control.

That's why I built VaultDrive: USB Backup.

Connect a compatible USB drive or SSD directly to your iPhone, select the photos, videos, albums, files or documents you want, and copy them to the drive.

No Mac required.
No PC required.
No VaultDrive account required.

For photos and files already stored locally on the iPhone, the transfer goes directly to your connected USB drive. VaultDrive doesn't upload those files to its own cloud.

And if you use Optimize iPhone Storage and some full-resolution originals exist only in iCloud, VaultDrive can download those originals through Apple's system first and then copy them to the USB drive.

You can choose:

• Wi-Fi only for iCloud downloads
• Wi-Fi + Cellular

It also preserves the original files without intentional compression/re-encoding and keeps embedded photo/video metadata.

I don't see this as a replacement for iCloud, Google Photos, OneDrive, etc.

Cloud sync is incredibly convenient.

I see it as something much simpler:

Cloud for convenience + a physical second copy for control.

Especially for family photos and videos I don't want existing in only one place.

VaultDrive is free to download, with a one-time Pro upgrade for unlimited backup rather than a recurring Pro subscription.

For the people here who use several TB of cloud storage:

Do you also keep an offline copy of your important photos, or is cloud storage currently your only copy?

I built the iPhone backup workflow I wanted: iPhone → USB drive, without a Mac or PC

I wanted something surprisingly simple:

Plug an external drive into my iPhone, select the photos/videos/files I care about, and make a physical copy.

No Mac in the middle. No PC in the middle.

That became VaultDrive: USB Backup.

Connect a compatible USB drive or SSD directly to the iPhone and VaultDrive can copy selected:

• Photos
• Videos
• Albums
• Files and documents

For content already stored locally on the iPhone, the files go directly to the connected drive—there's no VaultDrive cloud upload involved.

One of the bigger problems was Optimize iPhone Storage.

A photo may appear in Apple Photos while its full original is actually only in iCloud.

VaultDrive can now detect those items, download the original from iCloud, and then copy it to the USB drive. You can choose:

• Wi-Fi only
• Wi-Fi + Cellular

Other things I've focused on because they matter for an actual backup:

✅ Original files without intentional compression/re-encoding
✅ Embedded capture metadata preserved
✅ Useful original folder/source organization
✅ Original file dates where supported
✅ Resume interrupted backups and skip files already copied
✅ Detailed progress so you can see what's actually happening
✅ Clearer reasons when something doesn't copy
✅ No VaultDrive account required

I also want to be clear about what this isn't:

This isn't a full iPhone system image and I wouldn't recommend keeping your only copy on one USB drive.

The idea is to make it much easier to add a second physical copy of important photos and files to whatever backup strategy you already use.

For someone using iCloud Photos, for example, you can keep iCloud for syncing/convenience while periodically keeping another copy on external storage you physically control.

If anyone here wants to try it:

VaultDrive: USB Backup

I'm currently running 75% off the one-time Pro upgrade:

https://apps.apple.com/redeem/?ctx=offercodes&id=6772883827&code=WELCOME75

I'd particularly appreciate feedback from the backup crowd.

Attached the screenshots, just in 3 steps you can take backup of your media from phone to USB drive

What would VaultDrive need to do before you'd consider phone → external drive a useful part of your own backup strategy?

Back up iPhone photos directly to USB. No Mac or PC needed.

If your iPhone has years of photos and videos, you shouldn't need a computer just to make a physical copy of them.

I built VaultDrive: USB Backup for exactly that.

Connect a compatible USB drive or SSD directly to your iPhone, select the photos, videos, albums, files, or documents you want, and copy them straight to external storage.

Why people use VaultDrive:

✅ No Mac required
✅ No PC required
✅ No account or sign-up
✅ No VaultDrive cloud upload for files already stored locally
✅ Original-quality files — no intentional compression or re-encoding
✅ Embedded photo/video metadata preserved
✅ Keeps useful folder/source organization
✅ Resume interrupted backups without copying completed files again
✅ Detailed progress and clearer skipped/failed-item information

Using Optimize iPhone Storage?

VaultDrive can also download originals that exist only in iCloud before copying them to USB.

You control whether those iCloud downloads use:

• Wi-Fi only
• Wi-Fi + Cellular

The idea is simple:

Your iPhone → your USB drive → your physical copy.

It's useful if you're running out of phone storage, preparing for a trip, upgrading your iPhone, protecting years of family photos, or simply want another copy of important memories outside your online account.

VaultDrive is free to download, with a one-time Pro upgrade for unlimited backup. No recurring Pro subscription.

Would love feedback from other iOS users and developers who manage large photo libraries.

Update: My iPhone USB backup app now downloads iCloud Photos before backing them up

A month ago I shared the app I built because I wanted an easy way to back up my iPhone photos directly to a USB drive without needing a Mac.

The response from this community was incredible. I received a lot of feedback and feature requests, and I’ve spent one month improving the app.

Here’s what’s new:

✅ Downloads photos and videos stored in iCloud before copying them to your USB drive.

✅ You can choose whether iCloud downloads happen over **Wi-Fi only** or **Wi-Fi + Cellular**.

✅ Original Apple Photos folder structure is now preserved instead of creating date-based folders.

✅ Original photo and video metadata is preserved.

✅ Original file dates are preserved on the USB drive.

The goal hasn’t changed:
• Back up directly from your iPhone to a USB flash drive or SSD.
• No Mac required.
• No PC required.
• Create an offline copy that you physically own.
• Great for freeing up storage, upgrading to a new iPhone, travel, or simply having a second copy outside of iCloud.

One thing I learned after releasing the app is that many people don’t actually want to leave Apple Photos—they just want a true offline backup they control. iCloud is incredibly convenient, but having a second copy on external storage provides extra peace of mind and more control over your own memories.

If anyone would like to try it, here’s the App Store link:

A huge thank you to everyone here who shared feedback on the original post. Several of these new features came directly from suggestions in this community.

I’m always looking for ideas—what would you want to see next in an Apple Photos backup app?

My iPhone has 47,000 photos. I just wanted a USB backup without buying a Mac.

The more I talked to iPhone users, the more I realized this wasn’t just my problem.

People have years of family photos, travel memories, videos, and important files stored in Apple Photos, but when they want a true backup, the options are surprisingly limited.

Most solutions involve:
• Paying for more iCloud storage
• Exporting through a Mac
• Connecting to a PC
• Using multiple apps and complicated workflows
A lot of people simply want to plug in a USB drive and make a copy of their data.

For many users, it’s not just about storage—it’s also about privacy and ownership. They want a copy of their memories that they physically control instead of relying entirely on a cloud service or subscription.

That’s exactly why I built VaultDrive.

It lets you copy photos, videos, and files directly from an iPhone to a connected USB drive or SSD.

✅ No Mac required
✅ No PC required
✅ No cloud required
✅ Create an offline copy you physically own
✅ Works directly from your iPhone

What surprised me most after launch was how many users were looking for exactly this. Some are backing up before upgrading phones. Others want a second copy outside of iCloud. Some simply want peace of mind knowing their memories exist somewhere they control.

One small note:
All original photo and video metadata is preserved during backup.

Currently, when browsing the USB drive directly, files may show the backup date as the file timestamp. Preserving the original file timestamps on the USB drive is already being worked on for a future update.

How are you creating an offline and complete private backup of your Apple Photos library without a Mac or Cloud ?

I’ve been trying to improve my photo backup workflow and was curious what others here are doing.

Like many people, I use iCloud Photos daily, but I also wanted a separate offline copy of my photos and videos that I physically own.

Most solutions I found required a Mac, external software, or exporting from Photos on macOS. Since I wanted something that worked directly from the iPhone, I ended up building a small app that copies photos, videos, and files directly from an iPhone to a connected USB drive or SSD.

One small note:
All original photo and video metadata is preserved during backup.

Currently, files on the USB drive may show the backup date as the file timestamp when viewed in a file explorer. Preserving the original file timestamps on the USB drive is already planned for an upcoming release.

Features:
✅ Back up photos, videos, albums, files, and documents directly to a USB drive

✅ No Mac required

✅ No PC required

✅ No iCloud required

✅ No internet required

Just plug in a USB drive, choose what you want to back up, and transfer directly from your iPhone to the drive.

Now you do not need Mac to transfer / backup photos , videos, files and documents from your iPhone to External USB drive - just insert external USB to your iPhone directly and start backup

Just launched an iPhone app called VaultDrive.

One thing that always annoyed me was how difficult Apple makes it to move large amounts of photos and videos off your phone without paying for more cloud storage or connecting to a computer.

So I built VaultDrive.

✅ Back up photos, videos, albums, files, and documents directly to a USB drive

✅ No Mac required

✅ No PC required

✅ No iCloud required

✅ No internet required

✅ Optional encryption for private backups

Just plug in a USB drive, choose what you want to back up, and transfer directly from your iPhone to the drive.
