The Coercion

There came a point, due to a lie That was sent out to cover up for The fallout and accountability negate to A favorite of the one who leads

We sat her down and spoke about the move. A move she thought was suspious. We talked up this new position. The benefits that would be seen coercion at its finest.

Her wheels were forever turning, you could see the process as it was laid out to view. How she, herself, might benefit If she didn't move to the possibilities if she remained.

And yet, the one who could put this All to rest, is the same one who would only see that singular momentwhere she said yes.

The evidence presented fell on deaf ears as her character got assassinated by a trope of an affair within the ranks that never was there.

Another lie was spread far and wide of the tale how it was her idea to move prior To that coercion. Lie after lie to cover for the deceit. The trurh tried to speak but silence was heard miles ahead.

Again, a singular moment was all that was heard. Much like a submission to those who finally yes when they have already said no. What do you consider abuse? When you define it to your will By how you were treated was the status quo.

I Tried To Hold Myself Accountable

TDLR: My associate was blamed for something I originally did. I tried to take accountability by presenting facts that went ignored.

I was in HR for 3 1/2 years. I have the lowman on the totem pole of HR. Think at the local level and still have to answer not just to my local boss but also my HR in the district, then regional, and etc. It's the chain of command in this hierarchy. Some will understand this hierarchy.

When I got into the role of HR, within two weeks, I was already wondering if I was a true fit for the company. I used to joke that if I knew it involved arts and crafts, because of updating boards, I would have declined this offer. But it was more than this. It was within those two weeks, I already saw what I had gotten myself into. My first zoom call with my HR district manager, she sidelined herself to "shiny" and got distracted by watching her neighbors do something rather than the topic at hand. She was working from home.She also mentioned that she wanted to train me and never showed interest other than when she spoke.

What I will talk about is where I believe IATA. I tried to hold myself accountable with a manager who would never take the evidence provided. There was an incident that happened. My store manager, my team lead and myself were all in agreement. This revolved around his promotion. In order to move upward, he needed to go to training for a week and followed by another week on zoom. This was happening during our busy time where all hands were needed. Also, my team lead didn't drive.

We got word of his training and where it was located. It was a week before he had to be there. My team lead doesn't drive. I sent an email to the training coordinator asking for postponement. To which, it was received, responded, and agreed that we could delay this training. I forgot to include my team lead on the email and I didn't see him before he sent his own email. To which the training coordinator responded in the email that she and I already agreed with this. And, she mentioned my name.

Later that morning, I received a phone call from my district HR manager regarding his email. I kept repeating that I was the one who sent the first email and if she read the response, she would see, since she was included on his email and the response was all, she too saw her response. She purposely ignored the evidence to convict my team lead of being the one who cancelled, postponed, delayed, and rescheduled his training.

While this conversation grew, I admit my tone started to get frustrated, so I raised my voice but never insulted, or attacked the manager. I was told to watch my tone and that she didn't appreciate the heightened pitch. I apologized and lowered my tone and said, "I don't understand why you don't want to see the emails that point to me?"

This is where it turned. She stated that we were deliberately withholding my team lead from his promotion. We were going to minimize his bonus by doing this and delaying the role he was stepping into. I said, "You are really not going to look and continue to blame an innocent man for what I originally did." The message was loud and clear. Right after we hung, she called my local manager and I was told that I needed to calm down and watch my tone once again. I recounted my discussion and nothing more was said. There was no validation and there were no excuses. It fell by the wayside and just hung in the air between us.

This was the beginning of the end and it wasn't even the first year. I have tried to hold myself accountable within a company that wanted to blame others rather than look at the evidence presented.

Dear HR

Dear HR,

Or should I CR for Company Resource? Since this is the only real title, why fool the world? When you label yourself Human Resources, you provide resources for all and not the selected few that you or your boss has deemed as worthy.

I want to take a moment and address that I understand how hard it can be sitting next to the pulpit and watching with idle hands as they destroy lives to keep their bottom line from inflating. You work not just with the boss but also with the accountant to keep the numbers down. You and I both know that sometimes your hands are tied.

But, what about the moments that you stand up and rise? Those moments you think are unworthy and will find an easy solution. Fix it with a party, award, recognition, you know, the band-aid solutions. Oh, you may develop training programs and align with what you feel is deserving to learn but you only tackle a fraction expecting real training to happen once the employee goes live, out of orientation and left to fend for themselves.

I also want to take this time to address something that even you have been telling on yourselves through the years. You know those active shooter videos, the unconscious bias training videos, the diversity and inclusion videos, that all say the same thing,

You announce what is acceptable in the workplace and what isn't. However, you dismiss psychological abuse when it's presented. You narrow down the story to a singular event. Not the before and after. You are not a judge who hears all evidence before executing the sentence, yet, you continue to act as one. You will take the short route and therein lies our problem.

You will throw oil onto a fire that is burning, thinking it's wet and it will put it out. But all you do is fuel the fire. The workers aren't stupid. They understand when they see it as a "pizza party", that it's just a ploy to shut down the negative talk or recognition that suddenly starts again.

You throw in benefits and incentives, but the real underlying problem is accountability. Sitting with those employees and actually hearing them. Asking the right questions to get the best judgement. But, you dismiss, much like an estranged parent wondering why they no longer are being sought out. You created this divide and kept the culture as status quo. Why? Because it's easier to control the workers and influence them when they can't think for themselves.

You lose so much when you keep people from seeing their true potential. Innovation, team comadre, thriving environment one where everyone works for what's best for the company and not divide the teams. You will decrease turnover and survey results would improve.

You know exactly the harmful effects of psychological abuse causes. And yet, you do nothing to stop it. Sometimes, you encourage the victim to turn away and be the bigger person. And let's come back to that singular moment. How are you able to take into account of a sexual harassment claim and yet, dimiss so blatantly this invisible but dangerous entity?

I could only assume that you, yes, you, rally around to shut down the OSHA component of NIOSH because this would create more work for you and you are already up to your ears in spreadsheets, numbers, and schedules.

Please, I beg you. Either change your title or start being a real advocate like you claim to be. Stop the lie or start speaking the truth.

I need to know and please. I enjoy learning more about myself and seeing where I went wrong. I kind of already know but I want to see if it aligns with the majority of you.

For a little backstory. I was a stay-at-home for nine years. Once I left that marriage, I found a job in hotels and stayed in that industry for 12 years. Might have been a different properties but still in the industry. I also grew into management roles during my time. From Front Desk Manager to General Manager. I decided to move into HR due to wanting to be an advocate for the employee. My last hotel job, HR was, just this, a name on the wall.

When I got into the role of HR, within two weeks, I was already wondering if I was a true fit for the company. I also could talk about how I brought my level of hospitality to my new found career while seeing I was the one of the few who treated the workers with a certain level of respect and respected their time more than my own. Meaning, if someone had an issue overnight, I would come in early and readjust my schedule, I never believed it should be the employee adjusting their life.

Dear You,

You have worked 20+ years with a company. They give you a choice. You may find another department to work or you may leave the company with a severance pay. You decide to retire, especially now, that you have been diagnosed with autoimmune disease. One where you are barely able to get up in the morning due to the pain throughout your entire body. Forget the 20 years you put into the company, the last 12 weeks of your employment will determine your severance pay. You were on a leave absence that has expired and by the time you are able to get in to see the doctor, it's already past the time of your employment. Your severance was not what you were told or shown. Because, you missed days in those 12 weeks due to your disease. Why is 20 years of your history overrode by 12 weeks?

What I Know

Here is what I know. I know that when I presented all the information, with receipts, I was not the one held accountable but my supervisor was still blamed. In fact, I was relieved of all responsibilities that would have promoted him faster.

I know when I listed the reasons why a manager could not be trusted with his employees after lying about where the implementation of an illegal policy came from. The manager was willing to have his subordinates rest and take the blame. When I presented the information, I was the one blamed for lack of trust. I owned up for whatever I did while not having any evidence presented and removed myself from that position.

I know that when presented with details in a letter and having another supervisor tell their story, in its entirety. I was asked what was the purpose of this, and her truth wasn't valid. I know that the supervisor was coerced into another position due. I know this because I was part of that coercion. But, when the final answer was yes, that's the only answer that counts. The lie and defamation was already spread. I know, because I was presented when the lie came out of the manager's mouth.

These are just a few of the stories where psychological abuse takes place. When you have nowhere to turn because the one who stops it, is also the one who is supposed to listen with unbiased opinions. And as long as HR is under the control of the CEO, management, and the likes, HR, itself, will never be for the employees and the Open Door does nothing.

I have since left and am in a position where I am able to heal. I am better and these stories, while only a year and half ago, I first hand witnessed, feels like a lifetime ago.

This is where I challenge you. A movement begins with one voice, that turns into thousands, then millions. This vision will not see the light of day until long after I am gone. I am looking for help to lay out the blueprints so that future generations can take hold.

The employees, the associates, the workers, blue or white collar, need a place when the abuse happens. Something can be done and something needs to happen.

This isn't just about now. This is going to take years, decades, generations to finally correct what went wrong. But you can't stop the signal once it gets out and you can't silence the message of what is needed. The way you can help is to help keep the momentum that psychological abuse needs to be acknowledged and held accountable. Only then, can we finally grow as a society.

You have failed in your very Open Door policy that, we the workers, would be heard every step of the way. It stops short, in most cases, at the next level HR Manager that is off site. In doing so, these managers have already formed opinions and personal relationships that prevent an honest investigation to happen.

You have failed to protect your workers from serious harm. The training videos for activer shooters usually pinpoint a digruntle employee. The problem with this, while you promote mental health there is lack of training for psychological abuse that managers put us through.

Rather than preventing fires, you systemcially cause them. Not everything is a emergency and less is not more. You are wasting more money is you hiring then you do with retention.

Now that I have opened this letter psychological abuse. There seems to be a clear lack of accountability, ownership and correction when it's presented. Coercion of an employee, even when their final word was yes, it's still abuse. Anyone abusing the Open Door or creates tickets for malicious purposes. Those who abuse their power by demeaning, belittling, and insulting.

It's time to make some serious changes in the workplace and allow for real harmony, growth, and innovation to happen. This will lead to less turnover and a willingness to work for the business.

If these changes do not take, we, the workers, will reform an entity, much like OSHA, to handle the investigations, hold accountability, and develop training in psychological abuse. We will also ensure to provide workers with consultants who specializes in workplace abuse cases. They will be able to instruct the employees how to use the Open Door, when to go to management, and the when and how to document the abuse.

As a company, you want to prevent the fires, not just put them out. This is about decreasing turnover, increasing yout productivity line, and employment satisfaction. Only you can make these changes.
