Am I correct is calculating ACB for CCETF?

Trying to understand ROC and CCETF and ACB.
Example: I buy an ETF on Jan 2 for $30. The ETF pays 20% yield, once a month. That’s $6 a year or $0.50/share monthly. Entire $6 is return of capital.

Year end, the ETF was flat, ending the year at $30. Since there was no growth, a dividend received of $6 (assume I didn’t reinvest), would my ACB be $24 if was to sell?

Thank you

Cousin Carl in a BBC show

Watching Not Going Out for the first time. Pretty funny show that is now in its 14th season...though BBC comedies tend to run only six episodes a year.

Was surprised when Cousin Carl was in episode S4E3 "Movie"....about a porn director.

FYI...most of the 108 episodes are available on YT.

2027 Gear shakedown

Hello all! Looking to see if there some weight savings from my current setup. I am afraid though, if I cut too much, I’ll then want to bring my Bearikade which is bulky and heavy. But at 61 years of age, bear hangs aren’t fun.

I’m 90% sure I’ll be doing a flip flop from Harpers Ferry NOBO mid April. This will be my 5th time on the AT (3 NOBO and 1 FF attempt). Haven’t quit the trail before due to injury, finances or gear…all mental. I’m stubborn and just want to keep trying til the day I say “I did it!”

Couple notes from my lighter pack:

  1. First time I won’t be bringing a cook pot. I’ve spent the last two years practicing and eating cold soak/tortilla filled meals. After four tries on the AT, a hot meal didn’t do much for my moral.
  2. First time taking a CCF pad instead of inflatable. At home, I’ve been sleeping on it on top of hardwood floor…simulating how comfortable I’d be. Even as a side sleeper, I’ve had no pain.
  3. Ditched a merino wool sweater and keeping just a puffy. I found in the past…a puffy and rain jacket were enough. If…I make it on the SOBO portion late Fall, I can add warmer clothes.
  4. Rain gear: I do like having rain pants. Often where no loaner clothes were available, I was glad to have the rain pants while doing laundry.

So welcome to ideas. My first thought is whether I need my Garmin. I found my phone worked well enough for texting and navigation.

Switched from Zpacks Arc to Evolved Supply Space Ranger

So I'm retired, and I get bored easily during the winter months. Next year, I'll be attempting a thru of the AT. It won't be my first time on the AT, but so missing it. Canadian winters are long. lol, still have snow on the ground.

I wanted to give my thoughts on my new pack by Evolve Supply Co. I had been quite content with Zpacks Arc Air....though the bottom of pack started to wet through from my last thru attempt. The hip belts were a little worn as well and doubt the pack would have endured another long hike.

I have to admit, it was Darwin on the Trail YouTube videos that got me from weekend backpacker to thru hiker. Decided to give his equipment company a go. Watched a few videos, read reviews, then pulled the trigger on the Space Ranger.

There are a couple things that I like right off the bat versus my Arc.

  1. I can easily reach to my sides to grab a spare water bottle. Found the Arc a little more challenging.
  2. I like the pocket underneath the pack. I keep my snacks and hiking gloves. Easy to access.
  3. After years of sleeping with my food (yes, I know), giving my Bearikade a go. Stupid thing has sat collecting dust because I've always decided last minute it's not worth the weight. I think of how many times I couldn't find a good tree...or it was pouring rain and just slept with the food bag. The Bearikade was super tight in the Arc pack, but fits easily in the Space Ranger. I ran my sit pad around the canister to give protection from rubbing again the pack. Lots of room on both sides of canister for my rain gear.

Going out today on a short hike and see how it feels with the canister. In hindsight, this isn't ultralight - with canister I'm 16lbs, but wanted to give a take on what I hope is a great pack.

Here's my current pack list:

Sharing my shipping experience from US to Canada

Just received my order today from Evolved Supply Co. You may or may know...and you may not care, but Darwin on the trail from YouTube is co-owner of this relatively new gear company based in Arizona. My shift from backpacker to ultralight began when I first started watching YouTube 10 years ago. So I thought I'd give his gear a thorough watch, analyze the feedback and eventually purchase.

I've had great success in the past ordering from Zpacks and Wild Ideas (Bearikade) whereby I ask them to ship via USPS rather than a courier like DHL or FedEx. Those extra duty charges are a killer.

So when I placed my order with Evolved, I asked Darwin to send via USPS. That was April 30th. Got my delivery today. Considering I live northern Ontario, received my order today. Less than two weeks to go Phoenix/LA/Detroit/Toronto/Timmins and then where I live.

As for fees other than currency exchange buying online, I had to pay $101.37. $74.71 of that was GST/HST; $9.95 handling fee and $16.71 Duty and or surtax.

So...just wanted to share.

We live couple hours north of Timmins. Lake still frozen, and two feet of snow in bush…but just saw my first bear of the year. And a big one too…less than 2km from my house. Funny, drove by slowly as it sat on its hind legs maybe 30 feet away. Not scared one bit. Moved here nine years ago…I think this is the earliest I’ve seen a bear.
