Any John and Carolyn podcasts you’d recommend?

I’ve read books on John and Carolyn, and now am making my way through some books on the broader Kennedy family.

But are there any decent podcasts you’d recommend on John and Carolyn or the broader Kennedy family?

The ACT public school system — how long to stick it out?

My eldest child has started at Ainslie Primary this year (kindy). My husband and I are so passionate about giving our kids a public education, but we’re already being tested…

Term one: one of the kindy teachers leaves. I ask the executive teacher if there’s a plan to replace the teacher. Executive teacher tells me verbatim, ‘no, there’s nothing we can do.’ Despite this occurring in term one and surely there being ample opportunity to recruit a new teacher. Instead, the solution is to fold three kindy classes into two… One of the remaining teachers is an early career teacher too so it seems like a big ask, but I nod and say nothing more.

Then the ‘school report’ arrives and I use the term loosely… What arrived was a generic document with ticks against vague criteria and not a single comment. Nothing. Told me absolutely nothing. Ok, so maybe there’s some kind of opportunity to meet and discuss? Nope, nothing. Term three now and one of the two remaining teachers (the early career one) has now left for the remainder of the term (over a month of leave). The solution is to have two new teachers a week teaching the kids.

The principal and deputy principals have also disappeared for reasons unknown.

For anyone whose kids are in the public system here, is this standard? Or anyone whose kids are at Ainslie, is this what we should expect? Does this continue through the senior years?

Anyone tried Rosary instead? I really, really don’t want to send my kids to a Catholic school, but I really, really want them to have some consistency and learn something. How long to stick it out in the ACT public system? The system seems broken.

How to get husband to go to the doctors?

My husband has had some rectal bleeding and I’m incredibly stressed that it could be something serious.

I asked him to book a drs appointment when he told me, which he did. He has since cancelled it because he’s busy at work, which I find INFURIATING! He needs to get this checked out asap, we have young kids.

I know he hates going to the drs and is anxious about what he found, but how on earth do I get him to the drs without cancelling the appointment? He has a busy week at work coming up, but I’ve told him he should fuck it off for an hour or two and sort it out. Haven’t got anywhere though, help!

EDIT: thank you all so much for the helpful suggestions! He’s got a doctors appt after work on Monday 🎉

Is this mould?

I went to go drain my latest hatch and noticed these fine dots all over the top layer (most visible in the top right hand side of these photos). It’s been sitting for 48 hours, which is about the time I usually strain it. Have never seen this before though and not sure if I should bin it. What do you think?

An apology 8 years later…

I got this apology 8 years after we dated. I’ve been in a long term relationship since and so has he. Why’d he send it?! Does it seem genuine? It seems like it’s totally about his catharsis… would you reply?

Melbourne recs for kids

Hi Melbourne parents!

My family and I are visiting your fine city next week and would LOVE your kid friendly recommendations!

Would love kid friendly food recommendations around the Collingwood/Fitzroy/Northcote area, bonus if they’re allergy friendly (peanut and dairy allergies). Currently have Cibi and Friends of the Earth on the list.

And recommendations for fun things to do with young kids - best parks, exhibitions, whatever you think they’d love (kids are 5 years and 11 mths). Around the city/Collingwood/Fitzroy/Northcote area ideally.

Also, keen for a hair trim for my Afro textured hair since having my last baby. Any recommendations? Someone I could get in to see last minute too.

Thanks so much!

What’s the current climate in the APS?

I see a lot of comments and posts on here about the climate in the APS at the moment…. I’m reading this while on mat leave so can you fill me in a bit more? I’m out of the loop!

I’m an EL1 in a federal agency with specialist and generalist experience. I’ve acted as an EL2 so was hoping to go for a round in the next 2 years once I get through that first year of daycare and all the absences due to illness. Am I totally dreaming and I’ll just need to be grateful to (hopefully?!) return to a job and move on from promo aspirations in the near future? HR send me the internal job ads and there’s barely anything popping up… For those who’ve been around for a while, how long do you think this grim climate will last?

Appreciate your insights.
