East Coast Nor'easter Discussion Megathread

If you’re flying into, out of, or along the US East Coast over the next couple of days, you're likely already aware that there's a strong Nor'easter moving through the area. Our main feed has been getting flooded (pun intended) with individual questions about this over the last few hours, so we've set up this megathread to keep things a bit more manageable. Please keep all questions and discussions related to this storm here. Standalone posts will be redirected here for the next few days to help keep he main feed a bit more clear for users not posting about the storm.

A few quick reminders while this system works its way through:

  • Delays and cancelations are completely normal. They're not a sign of danger, they're the system deliberately slowing things down to keep everybody safe!

  • You are safe! Modern aircraft can handle far more than mother nature will throw at them, and pilots are well trained for these types of weather conditions. If the conditions pose a threat to the flight, the flight will be delayed or canceled. You will not fly if it's not safe to do so.

  • Poor weather does not automatically mean turbulence, but expect some bumps just in case. Remember that while turbulence may be uncomfortable, it's not dangerous in any way. Keep your seatbelt fastened snugly whenever seated.

  • Check with your airline for schedule changes. Our community can help reassure you and talk you through your fears and anxieties, but booking, compensation, or cancellation questions are best directed to your airline directly.

Feel free to drop your flight numbers below if you want someone to track your flight, share how you’re feeling, or ask questions about what you can expect. We're here to help you!

MEGATHREAD: K2 Airways Flight 1732

This thread is for discussion on the incident concerning K2 Airways Flight 1732. All other posts on this incident will be removed.

We know that aviation incidents can be distressing for fearful fliers. It is ok to feel upset, anxious or distressed. This thread is for mutual support at this time.

The rules for this megathread are:

  • No external links: All external links will be removed. Media coverage of air incidents is notoriously poor. It is dramatic, sensationalist, and in many cases factually wrong. There is no posting media articles, footage, or commentary of any sort in this thread or on the sub generally.

  • No speculation on cause: Speculation and theories on the cause of the incident is entirely unhelpful. We do not yet know the cause. Only a thorough investigation, completed by qualified investigators and technicians can determine this. We will learn in time what happened.

We are monitoring this thread closely.

REMEMBER:

  • We DO NOT recommend reading, watching, listening to any media, commentary, footage or any other material about this incident. Such coverage is usually deliberately provocative and only serves to feed the (incorrect) belief that flying is unsafe.

  • This incident does not "confirm" your fear. It is a freakish anomaly in an industry with a track record of outstanding safety.

  • Despite this incident, flying remains the safest form of transportation. This incident does not change that. If you have a flight booked soon, get on that flight!

  • Lessons will be learned from this incident that will make flying even safer.

Thank you.
