Thanks r/alltrack!

I don’t recall how I came upon this sub - it was sent to my feed at some point for some reason. But this sub is the sole reason I acquired my Alltrack. I was looking for a newer car with similar utility to my 07 Pontiac Vibe, and once I learned of the ‘track my search was limited to a single “model” (an Alltrack). Within 2 months I was the proud owner of a stock ‘17 SE with 71k.

I love this car so much.

(I just realized I mis-typed the name of the sub - whoopsie!)

Bridgie MB-4 parts bin build

Came out pretty good I think. I kind of like the aggressive stance with the suspension fork for now. Once I have a bit of disposable cash I’ll look into a rigid fork (likely a Carver) - it’s a rare bird with a 1 inch threadless headset currently installed. I like the headset (Origin 8), so I think I’m just gonna go ahead and bite the bullet on a carver front fork - you’re the only one to offer a 1 inch threadless version (plus, those guys and gals are pretty helpful and awesome).

Gear range (1x9 XT) seems to be enough for my terrain - I do have some hills and need to work with the 32t front, but it’s workable. Put on there for some extra insurance (chainring is not narrow – wide). I work on a boat so I think I’m going to make this my in-port Explorer rig. I’ll keep the Suspension Fork in the off chance I can get to some trails while in port (I was fortunate enough to be able to do this in Halifax this past fall and it was super fun).

New to IF - 15:9 to start

I decided to give IF a go as a way to introduce some discipline into my life (M:51), while simultaneously reaping the health benefits that IF imparts. I was a grazer - I would be snacking before and after dinner constantly. Usually right up to bed. It was actually a Huberman Lab podcast that piqued my interest- then I found this sub and started reading.

I’ve been at it about 10d. So far my schedule of a 10a - 7p eating window has worked, though waiting to eat in the am is tough some days. I’m an early riser (5ish) and typically active in the am, so not eating to either fuel the activity or replenish after has been the toughest part.

But I’m already feeling better. I’m sure just cutting out late night snacking is a big victory towards my goal of trying to lose a few. The physiological benefits of a shorter eating window is a bonus.

X-Biking?

Finally got some swell. Stoked to be able to explore some nooks and crannies.

For any XBikers near Worcester, MA

There’s a free GT Palomar on marketplace. (Not mine - I was going to share a link, but I didn’t want to break the rules).

Ps - it’s pronounced wuss-ter

Other models equivalent to a 750?

I’ve become greatly enamored with my 750. However, the frame is much too large for me (23” - I’m 5-8) so I’ve been looking for one in a smaller size and a comparable color way (mine is some smoke grey type color). But as you all likely could guess I’m not having much luck.

I’m curious what other frames/models from the 90s hybrid era would you consider roughly equivalent to a 750?

Front rack option for ~$40

Wanted to pass this along. eBay special - but it has fork-mount struts (can clamp or use bosses). Seems pretty sturdy - I’ll follow-up with a ride report.

Shipping was really fast (2d) from this seller:

Front rack under $40

Haven’t tested in the field yet (did a loaded rip around the block), but this thing seems sturdy. They’re all over the place on eBay from anywhere around $40 up to ~$90. $40 is pretty good for a strut-mounted rack from what I can tell.

Standard low quality hardware that may be best to replace at some point - it does come with brackets for the fork legs if your bike lacks the bosses. If interested, I recommend seeking one out around $40 and put it on your watch list - you’ll probably get an “offer” from the seller to purchase at a discount. I picked this one up for $37 shipped (and it arrived in 2 days).

Help ID year - Bridgestone MB-4 (seat post size)

Hi all- looking for help ID in the year of this lugged MB-4, so I can determine the seat post size. I tried measuring with calipers, but the CT tube is somewhat ovalized so I can’t get an accurate measurement (seat poster came with it was shimmed rubber). I ordered a 27.2 but that doesn’t seem to fit. I think my mongoose IBOC post fit and best I can tell that’s a 26.2. I’ll need to verify that though, but figured I’d put this out to the experts in the meantime.

What grade of gas in your Alltrack?

I’ve been using Regular (87 octane) since acquiring the car in October. My mechanic recommended at least mid grade because “gas in the Northeast is dirty”. It got me thinking- what grade do all you non-diesel Alltrack owners use.

*bonus question: ever tried SeaFoam motor treatment?

RIP KHS bikes

Picked this up as a tribute - read a lot of stories about KHS Montanas being people’s first “real” MTB - and for $25, I couldn’t help myself. New chain, cables and tires. Parts bin bars (not quite wide enough, but they’ll do for now. Gonna be my lunchtime campus shredder at work.

Sunday Score: Bridgestone MB-4

Grabbed this before my wife woke up for $20. Felt like I won the lottery (Marketplace message:”[seller] is getting a lot of messages about the listing”.

Frame has some wear - it was clearly ridden hard. Stoked on the lugged frame and there’s a mix of decent components - WTB wilderness trail brakes, LX rear XT front derailleur and cool STX combo lever / shifters (which I like so much I may leave it a 3x). Maverick WRD 542 wheels with Botranger hubs (no model #) - not sure if it would take a 8/9/10sp anyhow

The tires are actually pretty cool, though I’m a tanwall fanboy. May try a rigid fork if I find one, though the GILA seems to be in good working order.

Front rack

Looking to add a front rack to balance out the weight a bit during my partial commute to work (5-6mi round trip) and possibly other adventures (getting some wobble at speed with loaded panniers). If you got one, let’s see it!

I’m thinking a rack that will most commonly accommodate my computer bag on its side might be good (5x10x16”). There’s a surly 24-pack locally ($80), but that thing looks quite big. Also considering a Jack the Rack, but it’s a bit spendy.

Pic for attention 😊

Wobble with full panniers

I’m attempting a partial commute to work 2-3d /week via paved road (good shoulder bike lane). I noted on the past 2 rides that when the panniers are loaded up (10-15lbs each) I get a speed wobble at (guessing) 17-20mph. Is this common? I’m running low tread 700x45 gravel tires (*actually set up at 38mm).

Bike is a trek 750.

Lucky Vans - San Fran | my first tat!

Stoked on my first tat. Not completely original, but I came across this line from DT’s poem in a book on the eve of my 50th birthday and it struck me like lightning. Couple other artists around MA / RI rejected my request because it was just words. I’m glad they did, because I love how this came out.

It’s in the inside of my forearm so I could see/read it when I need it. Because, that’s the point.

Shout out to Van (owner) too - he was awesome to work with and we talked story together like old friends.

Unhumble wheel brag

Scored a cherry set of Ritchey Vaantage Experts with a HG Freehub for $30. I find wheelsets to be the most difficult part of building a slo-bike, so I’m stoked to have a set. I’ll probably change the 7sp freehub to one that will take a 10 or 11 sp cassette for a 1x build.

Just wanted to share my stoke with someone who may appreciate it. My wife just doesn’t get it (“…a bike is just a bike”)

KHS lives

Scored this for $25 today. Was gonna give the acquisitions a rest for a bit (seriously running out of space), but with the news of KHS shuttering and the bonkers cost of acquisition, I couldn’t pass it up. Thought it was black & white - couldn’t see the splash fade in the ad pics (it was pretty dirty).

Puch Chapparel

Cool little lugged step-thru. Frame is bigger than it appears (ST is 19-1/2”) and a bit too big for me - hence the cruiser bars. Could use a front rack / bag / basket.

Last of the winter projects. Not sure this will be a keeper - though it may work well with a surfboard rack attachment to explore the nooks and crannies.

(Put the orig Puch seat back on)

Tool loan: 1-1/8 fork thread die?

I have a cool 1-1/8 threaded front fork I’m trying to fit on an old Mongoose IBOC. The steerer tube is long and I need to extend the threads about 1” to get the top race to fit the bearing/top cup.

Does anyone have a 1-1/8 24 tpi right handed thread die and die wrench kicking around you’re willing to lend? I’m happy to pay shipping and kick in some beer / lemonade $$.
