Hot take, systems suck

Not all system storys are bad but the majority of them are and its because of the system.

Systems can range from simply having a game interface to basically a personal Ai assistant. They are supposed to act as a golden finger for the main character, key word supposed to. Often a system acts as a diamond spoon more than a golden finger. Does the main character need a heavenly cultivation technique? How convenient that it the reward for completing a mission. Or its a purchasable item in the system shop. It completely ruins all stakes or struggle in a story.

systems cheapen any and all accomplishments. When I read that an mc has killed a great monster it just, isnt actually fun when they have no struggle and they just get rewarded with the drops from the monster. I do wished more authors put in thought on how to dismantle a monster for parts. The romance/favor systems are the worst because most of the time its literally brain washing and not just building relationships. Even then, knowing exactly how much someone trusts or loves you is inherently a power imbalance and manipulation.

System stories can be good. though a good system is one thats actually like a game system and isnt just a personal Ai assistant. For example stories like god of fishing, and solo leveling have decent systems. They would be better without systems but the system doesnt ruin the story. Systems should exist to give the Mc a cheat skill like a crafting hub or just knowledge of their health. I feel that system stories have evolved into just, the author's cheap and easy way to make the mc powerful.

There are decent system stories but I have not yet found more than a hand full that are actually worth reading

Tuning ocarinas

I am a maker, I've been making ocarinas for about 3 years now but I've never found any cohesive tuning instructions for 6, 8, 10, and 12 hole ocarinas. If there are other makers on here how are you doing your tuning? And what scales are most popular

Old monsters are closer to their enemies than their own family

Just had a thought recently about how a thousand or even hundred year lifespan would effect your relationships with people.

To the old monsters of the cultivation world their families and decendents are worth little more than nothing. If one closed door cultivation session means missing a someone's whole life , do they even matter? If a decendent isnt able to cultivate it would be meaning less to even talk to them because in less than 100 years they will be gone. Even those that do will never be able to live as long as the old monsters, they would be more like pets than human family. People to care about but not trust in.

Other old monsters though are the only connection on the same lvl. They are as old if not older, understand the isolation. And they do not want your attention for meaningless treasures.

To the old monsters antone not on their level is like an ant begging for sugar. Yes they could give treasures that could instantly break bottlenecks and elevate others but why? Why should they choose this one ant over another. If they had an ant farm(decendents) they will feed them but thats more a hobby than an obligation.

Even if you start off as enemies only other old monsters can talk to you on equal footing and so the only result after a thousand years is an odd friendship. Even if you would kill them given the chance.

Douluo beast soul masters are stupid.

I think that in douluo beast soul masters are very very stupidly written. By stupid I mean that they rarely are written with powers or into roles that actually fit well with their martial soul. For example, the tiger. The tiger though powerful and a very big cat, IS AN AMBUSH PREDATOR. A tiger soul master being a strong attacker and not an assassin is like using a sniper as a shotgun, sure it works but its not nearly as effective.

The lack of actually interesting beast martial spirits have always bothered me too, there are so many animals taht if human size would be extremely dangerous.

There are other example of just, powers that would much much more powerful if the characters leaned into their nature as beasts. Like all the damned wolf soul masters, wolves work in packs that follow the eldest member who usually is the parent of the pack, yet pretty much all the wolf soul masters we see like to fight in single combat. Cat martial souls shouldn't be attacking multiple times, they are ambush predators who kill in a single quick strike. Birds, especially birds of prey use their talons and beaks to rip and tear their prey to great effect. For example the secretary bird stomping snakes.

Alot of them have long ranged energy attacks, far too many of their soul rings have ranged attacks where stacking physical boosts on top of their beast physique would make them very dangerous.

Agree or disagree

Mugs I made

This is for sale, trying to sell it on Etsy but that system is confusing and sucks. Dm me if you want it, 60$ per mug. Otherwise appreciation of my work is joy enough.

Douluo's power system is disappointing

I would like to hear your own opinion the story's power system throughout the series but as for my own, I have given up on it being as good as it was in the start.

My favorite parts of douluo are almost always the first half of the story, before the mc hits lvl 50. At that stage they tend to be alot more creative with their powers, like tang san tripping people with grass, slowing people down with parasites so he can use hidden weapons against superhumans. There is also hu yuhao being largely in a support role with limited super moves that always came with a cost. Tang wulin was consistently the least versatile among his friends, he could hit hard but not much else and that made his character more interesting because he had to rely on his team.

There are still issues at this stage. Douluo tends to focus very heavily on video game like elements instead of letting the powers work like they should in. For example why was tang san limited to 3 nets a day, its not using 1/3 of his soul power per shot otherwise he would be near useless in a drawn out fight. But again, losing soul power doesnt ever seem to effect characters which makes very little sense. There is little to no martial arts in douluo which again makes little sense seeing as most people dont have soul power and tool martial souls would easily beat beast souls if they had any level of proper training, extra range in melee fights is stupid op.

The elements also make no sense the more I think about them. The ones I remember off the top of my head are, fire, water, earth, wind, life, destruction, space, dark, light, strength, defense, evil, luck? They have little to no connection to each other and are just, all over the place. This isnt even taking into account the ultimate elements, the only 2 that makes sense is fire and ice(hot and cold) because thats a measurable power. Ultimate ice is extreme cold and vice versa. But what is ultimate earth? Space, luck, gold? Earth doubled is just more earth. I liked it better when there was less elements and a smart spirit master could actually beat a more talented person.

The more the story goes on the more xiaogang's bull about trash martial souls is just hypocrisy. Not a single time does a person with a "trash" martial soul beat someone with more talent than them, not once. Tang san? Literally one of if not the best plant martial soul. Hu yuhao? Body martial souls can start a bit weak but have a build in second awakening, and his are eyes( literally one of the strongest possible in that category). Tang wulin? With how much dragon bloodline is in his body his grass its not even blue silver anymore. And let's not get started on the 4th mc who i could not name or care about(i couldn’t read pass the first few chapters) but I do know his grass is literally the most op of all the mc so far.

I liked douluo better when it was a story where skills and being smart actually mattered in a fight.

Support types

One thing that always irked me about douluo is how much it relies on video game logic. You have to specialize in one of a few categories, we never see anyone who doesn't unless they have twin spirits. Characters are stuck with their martial spirit and its skills. Support types who cant get attack skills just suffer as the most vulnerable. But that just doesnt make sense. In the thousands of years humans have existed on douluo they have never had complex self created soul skills? Martial arts? Internal arts?

A Support type can be just as dangerous if not more than an attack type if they have self created spirit skills. Heck just simply having a weapon would help. They can just boost themselves with their skills or keep healing. Fighting healers is a pain.

Do you agree?
