What’s up with SMAs?

Does anyone have any thoughts on SMAs? Our advisors is not pushing but has presented SMAs as something we might be interested in. We are a teaching couple about 7 years from retirement. Good savings.
I guess just looking for your personal experiences.

Do you teach and allow “fair use”?

My Digital Art 12 class ends with students creating a short movie. They are basically the role of director and editor but everything else they can pull from non-copy-written sources (or make, animate, film on their own). We learn about Creative Commons and Public Domain and other collaborative sources like hitrecord.

And of course “Everything is a Remix” is a staple to show how nothing is created wholly new in a vacuum.

I try to teach the right way to do things but this is muddied by all the available music on Instagram reels and mixed allowances posted to YouTube and of course the leeway given to people creating things for education rather than profit.

I just watched “Nirvanna, The Band , The Show, The Movie” and was intrigued by how far they pushed using other people’s content. There are several videos of them talking about “Fair Use” and I wondered if this could be my newest addition to the course and a way for my need to teach the right way could catch up a bit with current ideas around creation.

I was wondering if anyone else teaches and allows “fair use” in any of their classes and if they had any resources they could point me to.

Did you recently pull Chesterman Beach footage? Looking for a stock artist who pulled their footage

Hi I am well along in a project that used a clip of a sunset at Chesterman Beach in Tofino BC. I was about the licence that footage and now it’s gone from Adobe Stock. I guess that happens but this post is a long shot to see if the artist is here. I downloaded the preview on July 5 and it’s been pulled since then.

Fido or other Canadian data packages on Alaska cruise

My wife thinks we can pay for the Fido cruise data package and it will work while on board, I guess somehow using the ships signal? I am sceptical. Does anyone know how this works?

I had to do triple take to make sure this wasn’t one of you already posting here. Hits too close to home.

Breeding in a fridge?

I have an outdoor covered patio in a part of the world where there are almost no mosquitoes.
However we have some at the patio, consistently more than we would expect.
We have a mini fridge on the patio. Any chance they are breeding in there?

Can’t figure out this effect.

Hello!
I’ve been trying to figure this out and now realize I need to turn to the pros!
This is video footage that I want to “fade” to pure white over a one or two second period.
But when I say fade I want the places to stay black and never go through shades of grey. I basically want the black to be eroded, for the black shapes to be eaten away. As if there is a bright light behind them that is getting brighter. If I had had a chance I would have tried to do this while filming by clicking up the exposure.
I would prefer to keep the effect in Premier but and comfortable with After Effects if need be.

I got close with a combo or Lens Flare, with posterize to deal with the greys, and Black and White to clear up the new colours that posterize created.

But keyframing the posterize as it jumps in is not perfect.

Thanks for any help!

Edit: thanks for people chiming in.
I actually got it looking pretty good by kayframing levels.

Question about music video production “rules”

I have all my footage and it looks great. 4 takes of the full band. Several each of bass, drums and lead.

I’m starting the editing process basically inserting individual shots on top of full shot at key moments. Cool bass riff, symbol hit or cool drum moment, important vocal moments.

The issue I am seeing is that the song itself follows a pattern with chorus, verse ect by its nature as a rock song. So now my edits are starting to follow the same pattern.

And so I’m wondering:
-is that actually what is desired?
-is that to be avoided?
-do you aim for a ratio of screen-time? For every 5 of full we want 2 of vocals and 1 each of guitar drum and bass?

Are there any rules or thoughts about this? Do you have your own aims and guidelines? Do you know of any articles where people have studies videos?

Of course rules are made to be broken but I am just looking for guidelines.

Has anyone tried Bearable?

Our daughter is in her 5th month of POTS and we are now looking back on all the different salt tablets, electrolytes, other supplements, meds ect, and realize we have done a very poor job of keeping track.

I see the app Bearable says it can tack all of that plus sleep and resulting moods. Has anyone tried this? H
Any other apps stand out as useful?

Edit: also interested in hear thoughts of Guava too!
