Opinions on 2024 Lexus NX 450h+ Sport

I have my eye on one that just came up for sale. 30,000 miles, $52,000. Any opinions from this wise group? Is this a good car at a good price? It's been so hard to find any PHEVs in stock that I tempted to buy it asap, but also worried that I'm jumping in too quickly, as I have not done lots and lots of reading up on this yet.

Did you move today?

There’s a yellow and black plastic bin at the intersection of Washtenaw and Geddes that looks like it fell off the back of a truck. It has a bunch of personal items inside. My son and I moved it from the middle of the road to the sidewalk.

If you were moving today and you’re missing a box like this you might want to come get it!

9-Month Contract/Requests for Service over the Summer

For those of you on a 9-month contract, how do you respond to requests to do service work during the off-contract months?

I teach at an R1 in the U.S. I was asked by the dean last year to serve on a committee preparing a new event that they hope will become an annual thing. I did this, the event happened in the spring and all went well.

Now I just got an email from one the staff members who also worked on this event last year asking me to join a meeting next week to plan next years event. I suspect she doesn’t realize what she’s asking. Staff usually work 12 months. And they probably sense that faculty do too, as we do work all summer — researching, writing, revising or designing syllabi, etc. But we are not actually paid over the summer, and attending committee meetings is not the norm. This is especially true when no one has asked me to serve on this committee in the fall so I thought I was done. Now it feels like there’s some assumption that I’m on this thing forever.

That said, I could attend. It’s on zoom. I do have experience that would be helpful to them. But I don’t want to. I want to keep my head in my research and not break up my day with committee meetings. Do I just attend to be helpful even though I would be resentful? Do I tell her no and explain that I am literally not paid to do this? Do I make an excuse that I am not available (and never will be until the semester begins)?

What do you do with requests of this kind?

What to expect in a 504 plan

Our child was recently diagnosed with ADHD and their school just put together a 504 plan. I’ve never seen one of these plans before but was really surprised by what was included (and not in a good way) — all kinds of diagnostic information from my child’s doctors - intelligence level, test results, etc. I thought that would be protected information that would only go to the counselors, and that the plan would just be the accommodations part. But it looks like all my child’s info will be sent to their teachers. Is this normal?

Moth balls

How worried should I be about my parents’ use of mothballs? Their whole condo unit smells of them, so much so that the smell starts in the common hallway outside their door and then just gets more intense as you come inside.

They are used to the smell and so don’t notice. And they believe mothballs are necessary (I’m not sure why).

Should I be urging them to stop this practice and clear the air? It’s gross to me, but I don’t live with them so that doesn’t matter. Is it unhealthy for them?

I also worry that their friends and neighbors won’t want to come over to visit but also won’t want to tell my parents why.

Anyone here have a recommendation for a good dry cleaner for your graduation regalia? A professor friend of mine (at another university) had her doctoral hood ruined when she got it dry cleaned and she thought it was because the cleaners just weren’t used to this weird item (I mean, they are such strange items!) I figured dry cleaners in Ann Arbor have probably seen many of velvet-trimmed hoods and robes over the years, but would love recommendations for a place that has done this well.
