Math help due to overcontribution

Hi all,

My husband and I were on my employer HDIP with an HSA until he just accepted a job last week. The math works out better to drop him off my plan and he signs up for their free one and opens his own HSA.

The problem is that HR on my side says I've overcontributed and need to submit paperwork to healthEquity to remove over contribution.

the numbers:

total YTD contributions: $5162.50

max allowed for family: $8750

max allowed individual: $4400

I don't know how to work out what amount is over contributed, considering we did have a valid family plan until last week. Is it just my last contribution of $256.25 that came in a couple of days after he signed up for his insurance? he is still on mine as well for now until he gets proof of insurance I can submit as qualifying event.

Thank you!

What are HSA limits if both spouses have high deductible insurance?

I'm so sorry about the title, I'm unsure how to phrase it.

My husband and I were on my work insurance, a High deductible account with HSA eligibility. My work also deposits $2600 into the account at the start of the policy year for family ($1300 for individual). The member+spouse premium is $190/pay check, would be around $80 for just me.

My husband has gotten a job that also has a high deductible plan, but his company does not contribute anything to the HSA. His plan is free for himself, and would be about $120 for both of us, per paycheck.

Right now he's on both his company insurance and mine, as HR has yet to reply to my request to remove. In the meantime I am wondering, does it make sense to be double insured? Does it change HSA contributions? I can't imagine there's a loophole where we can have two HSA accounts with separate ~$8400 limits, correct?

Simplicity s9960 in knit?

Hi sewing friends,

I would like to make my husband a loose-ish (flowy) buttondown shirt. I have Simplicity S9960 view B, and wondered if anyone around here has made it in a knit before? I bought this mystery fabric a few years ago at Joanns (RIP), and i think it was labeled as some sort of linen blend. It's got a nice drape, would make a decent shirt i think. But i want to make sure this pattern could work with a knit before i go and cut into it.

If you have a different pattern rec, I'm also open to hearing suggestions.

Old accident report completely tanks car value

Hi all,

I own a 2018 chevrolet volt, bought in october 2019 brand new. Thanksgiving that year, with a whopping 100 miles on it, we were the last car in a chain of rear endings on the highway. We had no damage at all to the car, but we stayed to wait for the report because that's what we thought you're supposed to do. What i did not mf know is that will haunt me forever. The car is in otherwise spotless condition, with all routine services and everything.

We have some expensive maintenance coming up and i was curious if it was even worth it, so i checked the value on carvana. Bruv they're offering me $1600. That is insane, correct? I assume that accident report for 0 damage is the issue. Is there a way to get that removed? Via a 3rd party inspection or something? Who even do i contact about this?

eta: I'm not looking to sell the car. i literally just wanted to know the value vs the cost of work, and if the value based on carvana offer is influenced by the 7yo accident report and if removing it would improve the value.

Debating reviewing new (to us) sitter

Hello, We've used Rover successfully for a few years, but as it tends to be near a college town, our sitters have moved away over time. We looked for a new sitter and found someone affordable with only 5 star reviews (over 50 of them) close to us, and set up a meet an greet.

It should have ended there honestly, the vibes were kindof off- but we told ourselves that just because they're awkward with people doesn't mean they're incapable. Clearly the 5 star reviews can't all be wrong.

We booked for hour long visits as our dogs are social and like to be around people. Our security system records comings and goings at the front door, and it consistently recorded this sitter leaving 10-15 minutes early every single visits. Over 3 weeks, that's 10h or so of time my dogs missed out on.

Our male dog also has separation anxiety and will mark his territory in specific locations, which I informed the sitter of and left cleaning supplies in the event any pee had to be cleaned. I do not think they cleaned once, as we came back to all the noted areas covered in dried on dog pee.

There were other, smaller things that overall added to an unpleasant experience. I am hesitant on reviewing, as I tend to be somewhat... afraid i guess of blasting someone publicly and affecting their livelihood. Any thoughts?

ETA: we don't have an overnighter because no one actually wants to offer that service around us. it would be cheaper and less annoying for the dogs to have a person actually stay, but every time we discuss it, it's never really something the person wants to do, for whatever reason.

Snapping turtle laying eggs in yard

Hello, we just noticed a large snapper laying her eggs in our flower bed. She's in the front yard away from our dogs, so likely feels safe for a few hours. Anything we can do to help both her and after she's left make sure her eggs get a fair chance?

Hello all,

We are looking for suggestions on companies or individual professionals who are familiar with expat requirements for US into France. We plan to retire in 5ish years in our 40s. I have european citizenship, my husband does not.

Our questions lie primarily in how should we keep and use our money. Currently we have almost 2 years of expenses in a HYSA. The rest of our money is in ETFs (VTI, VXUS, and QQQ). We also max our 401ks. We are currently trying to decide if we should put 8k/month into ETFs or split 5k into ETFs and 3k into the HYSA to have cash on hand when moving.

We predict we will have a little over $1mil in 5 years in taxable accounts and savings combined. We will also have 750k in our 401ks at that point when we quit our jobs but won't touch that for 20 or so years. Our house will likely net us 400-500k upon sale. We plan to buy outright under 150k euro.

We need help understanding how to use all this capital to live off of in France. I am trying to understand the tax treaty but i am unfamiliar with a lot of the terms and need someone smarter than me to explain it.

Tldr: want to retire at 40 in 5 years in France. Will have ~1.5mil in assets, where to keep to use in the best tax advantaged way
