Flashy plants for a shady garden

Flashy plants for a shady garden

Just bought a new house with a north west facing front garden. We were very excited because our old house’s front garden was fully north facing. It’s been my dream to have an old house with a cottage garden out front, the type of house people smile at when they go past. However our neighbour has a tree that overhangs onto our property a bit. It’s not a big tree at all so we didn’t think much of it. Well, I tracked the sun today to see just how much the garden would get to determine what we could plant. As it turns out we have less sun than we did with our fully north facing garden due to how close the tree is. 40 minutes of sun to be exact. I can’t even plant a hydrangea. Can’t even put a window box out. I’m shattered, honestly I could cry. Please help, what can I plant that’s pretty? I don’t want a boring gravel front garden or a load of hostas.

My husband and I inherited his great grandmother’s sideboard

We just moved to a new house and as we’re the only one in the family with room for it now, it came out of storage to come live in our dining room. I’m absolutely in love with the handles. Halfway between art nouveau and art deco. I cannot wait to give this beauty the love it deserves.

Couldn’t wait to put plants in my new front garden

Just moved into our new house and, aside from starting to unpack, the first thing I did was put some pots out front. It’s so pretty already, but I’ve got big plans for the front garden including taking up that gravel 🥹

My new CC41 bedside tables

The biggest struggle I’ve had in creating the 30s/40s bedroom of my dreams is sourcing a matching pair of bedside tables that didn’t cost an arm and a leg. In my literal years of looking I have almost exclusively came across lone refurbished bedside tables, 30s/40s bedroom sets with one “well used” table, or very fancy art deco pairs with an eye watering tag to reflect that. It turns out that having one per person in a set wasn’t the standard back then and the folks that had the space for two in their bedroom set purchase were usually the ones that could afford a very nice set- the tables of which are high end antiques today.

But then, during one of my evening ‘vintage furniture hunt’ scrolls (these are almost nightly because I’m after several pieces for around the house) I found these. It was like spotting a unicorn. A matching pair of CC41 bedside tables, not in need of serious TLC, and within my budget (though only barely lol). The markings on both mat be faded, and one may have been double marked which makes seeing the logo hard, but they’re undeniably there! They’re slightly more visible in person but not much. I can just about see the “1” one the table that was double marked in person. Now I know that means they may be from as late as 1952,which breaks my “rule” when acquiring bedroom furniture, but they could also be from 1942-1949 and are based off of a 40s design. Plus they’re a cool piece of wartime history. The CC41 marks let me know that they were built with a purpose and that alone makes me love them so much.

Early 1940s Cutex polish in the shade “Laurel”

Plus the bottle of polish remover it came with. I thought it was just your usual 1940s pinky red when I bought it, even though I was happy with that! But looking up old ads online depicted it as very light pink. There was a lot of titanium oxide on the back though from where it’s been resting all these years, so I’ve been shaking it on and off all day to mix in what I can and….. wow! I’ve never seen such an intense shade of pink for a pre1950s polish before, so I’m feeling like I found a treasure with this one. Even online I can’t find anything so intense pre-50s. Heck, I can’t even find another bottle of Laurel documented in the modern day anywhere. There’s still more white pigment even to mix in but the cap is stuck but your girl has no thinner to loosen it so that she can get in there with something to poke at the chunks. I’m still so in shock by the colour. Second pic is a before and after the polish being shaken up for hours.

Snagged a 1940s Cutex Nail Set today

Sold to me as 1930s but my research says they changed the bottle shape to this in 1941. The shade Laurel supposed to be a lighter pink but the white pigment has all settled to the back.

My “Round-the-Clock” cookery Book from 1935

My most recent vintage cookbook find. I was told to post it here, I had no idea the sub existed previously but I’m happy to have found it because I collect vintage and antique cook books. :)

My little 1940s apron

My most recent vintage clothing find, although for domestic use instead of being flaunted on the streets lol look at how much more vibrant it is compared to my modern repro dress! And the pattern is so dreamy!

My newest 1930s Arthur Wood Wall Pockets

The newest to my budding collection! In is in near pristine condition, even with the original chain (that’s a 35/65 chance based off my regular online browsings). The other one has had a harder life it seems. No chain at all, no he silver has rubbed away heavily on the front, and at some point someone decided to “fix” that issue by painting over it with cheap gold acrylic paint. I managed to get the gold off (see that lovely before and after on the second slide) and it looks so good despite its flaws! I plan on getting a chain for it so they’ll be a nice matchy matchy pair hung on either side of my bed, but for now it’s hung up as is with some flowers in both to “welcome” them home. ☺️

My new book case from 1946

Got it from the original owner’s son. He was only getting rid of it due to lack of space. I was thrilled to receive it and he was thrilled to see it go to a good home. (Also Please don’t make rude comments on its placement, this isn’t its permanent spot. Lol we’re moving so we decided this would be a good time to offload furniture we no longer want and pick up things for the new space. So for now it lives in the corner with moving boxes all over the place)

Dry Cleaners recs for vintage and rayon pieces.

Hey all! Looking to get some of my vintage clothes dry cleaned, mostly rayon from the 1940s, but don’t know where to take them. I feel like taking them to Timpson’s might be a gamble unless someone here can vouch for them. Any recommendations of cry cleaners you would trust or know has experience would be greatly appreciated :)
