Kernel advice

Hi all,

Hope everyone is doing good.

I’m new to Linux, have had mint for close to a month now I think and I had a question about kernels. My laptop is on 6.17. That’s the kernel my laptop chose I guess as I don’t remember picking it. I have 7 available but read that people are having some issues and to go with the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality. However 6.17 will only be supported until August apparently and I heard that 7.1 is in beta, so wanted to ask what the recommendations are when it comes to updating kernels. Should I wait until August to update? Should I just leave it on 6.17 until I run into issues in the future? Sorry if the answer is obvious. Would appreciate any advice, thank you.

Is it worth it?

Hi all,

I hope everyone is doing good.

I’m pushing myself to learn programming. I have no prior knowledge but I’ve been familiarising myself with Linux after installing Mint on an old laptop and have got resources on Python ready too. I’d like to take my curiosity and turn it into a career hopefully but with ai and llms, is this just a pipedream? Would it be a waste of time to learn and try things? I do want to learn for me but I’m also at a stage in my life where my curiosity needs to be the means to pay the bills too.

Thank you. Hope you all have an awesome weekend.

How and what to learn?

Hi I hope everyone is doing awesome.

Forgive me if this has been asked to death or maybe isn’t even the right place to ask.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to learn how to code who has no knowledge of programming/coding and is probably missing basic understanding of certain concepts?

To give more context, learning how to write my own scripts to automate things and make the little things easier sounds appealing, but I also just want to learn in general and see how far I can go.

I do feel intimidated and frankly worry that I won’t be smart enough to learn, so any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you very much.

Can’t remove graphics card to access CMOS battery

Hi, I hope you’re all well.

Pretty much what it says in the title. My cmos battery has died but it’s behind the graphics card on the motherboard. I tried to unscrew the mount the graphics card is connected to but the screw won’t budge. I even tried to use a pair of pliers to loosen the screw from the back but to no avail. Not sure what I else I can do (I’m hoping I’m being stupid and tried to unscrew the wrong and it’s a pretty simple solution). Any help would be very much appreciated, thank you.

Just wanted to say, as someone who hopes to ditch windows and permanently replace it with Linux (most likely mint), a thank you to people with experience and knowledge on this sub who help absolute noobs like me (even if someone doesn’t comment no doubt many have benefitted).

I’m not going to lie, I’ll read posts sometimes and it seems like you guys aren’t speaking English with some of the terms and things mentioned lol, but that’s on me to fix by continuing to learn.

I still have some anxiety of coming over to Linux but you guys do help lessen that, so again, thank you.
