London-Amsterdam OR London-Paris-Amsterdam with a Bike?

#eurostar

Hi all, very luckily I was able to catch the news about the Eurostar disruption in Rotterdam (it's been a week) before booking anything. The website now says the chaos will continue until Sunday, even Monday 5 July.

I'm about to travel with a bike (mechanical) from London to Amsterdam. Coming here to look for advice and saw someone saying that the route, though not including Rotterdam, is abysmal. Another person said that Paris-Amsterdam is rather fine.

I'm not in urgent need to travel, but I do want to leave the UK by 13 Jul. Checked the ticket price, my guess-timation is that Lon-Par-Ams is probably cheaper than Lon-Ams direct. According to this faq (https://help.eurostar.com/faq/uk-en/question/Can-I-take-my-bike-on-Eurostar), there are more trains allowed to take assembled bike from Lonon to Paris, so more options in choosing tickets & time? (I live in a small village and taking my bike to get unassembled in the city takes more than an hour to walk back, hence Eurostar.)

Would you suggest that I take a slight detour in Paris before reaching Amsterdam? With ticket price, time, disruption, and a bike all considered? There's no fixed arrival time for me and I can find my way in Amsterdam.

A bit of achievement

It's important to celebrate little things. I've been learning Dutch on my own for about two months, from absolute 0 (I didn't even know 'thank you' on day 1). I have an intensive plan.

I've been following the World Cup on NOS. I love soccer. And honestly yesterday I just realised that I could understand about 10% of the commentator's speech. Nothing special, just basics like 'now it's number five...Oh no, that's a corner/free kick/yellow/red card', or 'what a surprise!', 'they are going to try... today is a good day for...', or 'you can see their frustration' etc..

For this I'll keep learning. woo hoo.

Separate verb with modal v. & niet

Edit: Typos after text disappeared somehow. Sorry. Thanks for the explanation!

Hi all, once again I have questions!

I'm learning separate verbs today. I understand how they work in a sentence. I'm trying to make some more sentences with modal verbs and the negation 'niet'. Since the online course handout and dutch grammar website didn't specify this (maybe the latter did, but I want to make sure I get this correct), so can someone just check my sentences please:

(The English sentences are what I want to express.)

Original: Tommy staat om acht uur op.

>

Original: Johan komt om drie uur in Amsterdam aan.

>

I am aware that gaan is not a modal verb, but it allows a second verb within the same sentence, and I learned it in the previous lesson, so I want to practice it.

Thanks as always! 🙏

Writing practice: 'Mijn vrije tijd'

Hello! I'm taking the TU Delft beginners' online Dutch courses and there was a writing practice. It's week 4 now and I don't think anyone is grading our writings. Perhaps the wonderful ppl here can give me some feedback?

The prompt was:

>1. Nu ...
2. In Delft wil ik graag  ...
3. In het weekend ...
4. ‘s avonds ...
5. In mijn vrije tijd
6. Ik houd van ...
7. Ik vind ... leuk
8. alleen
9. samen met ...
10. sport
11. cultuur
12. koken
13. naar de film
14. spelen

My writing:

Two things I'm not too sure about are word order and sentence structure with commas. In English, if you don't have conjunction word, e.g. 'and', then you need a full stop (.). For example, 'I like rice. I make rice (correct)', but 'I like rice, I make rice (wrong)'. I noticed some other languages may not be as strict, so how about Dutch?

Any suggestion or new words to improve my writing is greatly appreciated!

Hij drinkt geen koffie vs. Hij drinkt koffie niet - meaning difference

Edit: Wow, thanks everyone. Everytime I came across a new grammar point, I quickly understood it, but then my mind went around and I started having questions for minor things. Really helpful you guys for the nuances!

I have two grammatically correct sentences and I just want to make sure I understand the nuances in meaning, so when using them, I meant what I say.

>a. Hij drinkt geen koffie.
b. Hij drinkt koffie niet.

What I understand these two sentences (with imagined scenarios):

a. He usually drinks coffee, but today, he didn't/doesn't drink any. Or, coffee was provided, but he simply left it out.

b. He normally doesn't drink coffee. When provided choice, he will decline it. It's a norm and his preference.

Am I right?

Qs: Time/place position, worder when inversion?

Edit: oops, apology for the title. I meant 'order', not worder (wth).

Edit 2 (1pm): Thanks so much for your help! Grammatically correct vs. pragmatical is always a big issue for me when learning languages, so all your answer is really helpful. :)

Hello! This is my first post in this sub. :)

Currently on Bart de Pau's #dutchgrammar 1. In L24 word order, I came across these sentences below.

I don't have any problem about time and place in a statement sentence (I know it first 'time' and then 'place'), and I know you must inverse subject and verb when you put either time or place in the beginning of the sentence.

I practiced by making some of the variations, but I'm not sure if they are (grammatically) correct, hence the questions.

>Ik moet volgende week op dinsdag om 12 uur naar de tandarts.

Q1. Can I say: 'Volgende week op dinsdag moet ik om 12 uur naar de tandarts'?
(In L24 BdP's exercise, the preposition 'op' is omitted. Should I put 'op' in this sentence?)

Q2. Can I say: 'Op dinsdag moet ik volgende week om 12 uur naar de tandarts?'

Q3. Can I simply say 'volgende dinsdag'? Is this allowed in Dutch generally? (Like English, 'next Tuesday'.)

>Mijn tandarts zit in de Kerkstraat in het centrum van Arnhem.

Q1. Can I say 'In de Kerkstraat zit mijn tandarts in het centrum van Arnhem'?

Q2. Can I say 'In het centrum zit mijn tandarts in de Kerkstraat van Arnhem'?

As you can see, my questions are mostly about after raising a part of the time/place to the first position, what to do with the rest of the parts in a sentence.

Dank u wel!

Qs: Moving and Settled in NL

Hello! I'm about to move to NL and have some questions about more minor things. Can't really find the answer on other subs or here. Apology if they're obvious and appreciate if you can point out where to find.

Q1. I have a bike in the UK and thinking about taking it over to NL via Eurostar. It's not an expensive one nor an e-bike - I got it secondhanded, had quite some repair work done over the years (4+). Reason I want to bring it with me is bc I am a small person and I know Dutch are tall creatures, and I've heard about Dutch bikes using pedal brakes instead of hand brakes(?). Is it reasonable? If I need repair work, would it be difficult to find parts for this English bike (apollo excelle)?

Q2. Does 'Is Angela working here?' work in Dutch bars/pubs? Or does it vary from business to another?

Q3. I know budget supermarkets are eg. Jumbo, AH, Lidl all have loyalty membership. What is your preference? I love a cashback or points scheme when you actually can use for buying groceries (boodschappen doen!), but understood that this might not be a thing in NL.

Q4. I like to read and often buy and re-sell books on platforms. I know there's a boekenbalie app that allows you to trade-in by bulk, so not one book at a time. Has anyone used it? Do they take English books? Is there any other app that does the same? I'm looking for options other than ebay or vinted.

MVV+VVR current process time?

Dear all,

I wonder if anyone could share a bit about their timeline of receiving their MVV?

I submitted my application to school on 22 May. I realised that I should not be entering NL (as a tourist, even tho my passport is visa-free) before I receive a result. I signed up a course that will begin on 6 July.

I have contacted the school to ask about postponing/refund the course, but thought I'd ask about the waiting time for MVV. Thanks a lot!
