r/Eurostar

An appalling system. Bizarre and embarrassing.

E-gates leaving don’t work. Ticket gates poor reading and massive delays. Passport and finger print check again both AI and manual. Bags through X-ray. It’s not just bad but chronic and infuriating that tax money goes on this shit. And all in a cramped airless hall. I’m not surprised people are aggressive to staff. I saw many being called horrendous names. Good.

Just got my train cancelled for the third time this summer. At this point Eurostar owes me therapy.

Booked months ago. Got the email last night. This is now officially a pattern and not a coincidence. Anyone actually managed to get proper compensation rather than a voucher that expires before you can use it or is that just a myth?

Traveling From London to Paris

My husband and I have a 1:15 pm flight out of Charles de Gaule Airport and will be leaving from London. If we take the 6:00 am Eurostar (arrive in Paris at 9:30) will we make the airport by 11:15 for our flight. What is the best way to get from train to airport and how long does it take?

Why are the Eurostar in-train displays so lacklustre?

I mean this fairly light-heartedly but why is it that the on train information display screens are so devoid of useful information and how can we encourage Eurostar to make them better? I do want to make it clear that I like Eurostar and I like travelling on their trains. I think the service is generally very good, this is just a small thing that I think could be better.

I had the pleasure of travelling by train from Hanover to London by train via Amsterdam a few months ago and the difference in information given to you on the information screens between the German ICE trains and the Eurostar was stark.

On the German train, there was a wide range of information that rotated round in a short cycle. There were maps showing where we were, where the next stop was and the route. The speed of the train was shown and crucially there was some really good info on connecting trains and even buses at the next station including what platform those other services were leaving from and if they were delayed and by how much. I'm probably forgetting some things but all in all it seemed to me to be very useful! Plus, it was all in both German and English, and Dutch as well once we crossed into the Netherlands.

Compare that to the Eurostar trains…. Well I just don't think they're as good. I watched the screen on this journey for as long as it took to loop around (which felt like forever to be honest and was probably about 10-15 minutes). The information was as follows:

  • Fleet features
  • Advert for club Eurostar
  • Advert
  • What to do in an emergency - leaving the train
  • Info on bins
  • Advert
  • Tunnel trivia - top speed, tunnel length, depth below sea level
  • Luggage instructions
  • Courtesy reminder - no smoking, feet off seats, please use earphones
  • No inappropriate behaviour reminder
  • Advert
  • Plug sockets info
  • Mind the gap warning getting on/off the train
  • Current speed
  • We'll soon be arriving at… - this was incorrect, we were over half an hour away from our next stop
  • Take your belongings with you
  • Mind the gap warning X2 - repeated twice in a row for some reason, not actually approaching a stop either
  • Welcome to… - also incorrect, we weren't arriving anywhere
  • Meal deal in Café ad
  • Eurostar café location information
  • Free wifi advert

I will concede there's some useful information buried in there about bins, plugs, current speed, the café and the We'll soon be arriving at… assuming it's accurately timed. Plus it was all in multiple languages. But there's a lot of adverts (probably unavoidable but still annoying) and some superfluous info that sometimes feels as though your being talked down to (in my opinion anyway).

I guess what I'm saying is that I want travel connection info. If German ICE trains can do it for a cross country train stopping at over a dozen cities and towns then surely Eurostar can do it for trains that are only stopping a handful of times!? Think of a train arriving at St Pancras; most of the people arriving there are going to be jumping on another train or the tube or a bus. Why not show the status of some key departures from St Pancras, Kings Cross and Euston and give the status of the Underground lines because you can bet that some people on the train would like to know if the Picadilly line is screwed…

Anyway rant over! I know this is a ridiculous thing to complain about but it just frustrates me when an excellent information system is right there in Germany and the Eurostar equivalent does not compare favourably.

How early should we arrive for Eurostar Premier from Amsterdam to Paris?

We are taking Eurostar Premier from Amsterdam to Paris in July. How early should we arrive? I understand there is no customs or security.

London to Disneyland Paris

Looking for the best route from London to Disneyland Paris. It will be just myself and my partner traveling the end of November. Looks like the cheapest route is into Paris Gare du Nord with a connection to Marne-la-Vallée Chessy. Because our trip is so far out the schedule is not available for the regional trains yet. However, I'm seeing that taking the Eurostar into Lille is the less stressful route. I do not mind paying a bit more if this is the better option. Can anyone shed light on the best routes to take. We will also be traveling on a Sunday if that matters.

Brussels midi station and metal detectors at St Pancras

I am going from London to Brussels. I am travelling with small tote bag containing two costume jewellery metal rings sellotaped to the inside of a birthday card, as well as a small wall hanging which has a metal wire going horizontally attached to each side by 2 very small hooks made of metal to hold the hanging to the wall as well as metallic wrapping paper. Will this all have to be unwrapped to show the detecting people the aforementioned items? Will they have to be placed separately inside the tray. I don't have a case, just a small canvas tote type bag. I am also scared my bag may be removed from the scanner at the other end and stolen as I am disabled and can't get through the line quickly.

Does anyone know how to get from Brussels Eurostar exit to the front of the station exit/entrance doors? On the Place Victor Horta side. I have special assistance booked but was told they won't take me further than outside the immediate eurostar area, even though I cant walk more than about 30 steps. I am traveling alone and cannot push my own wheelchair as arms don't have strength due to my disability.

Any help or answers to these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

(rant) I was today years old when I discovered...

... that I cannot travel from Amsterdam to Lille in a direct Eurostar. like WTF. So must change in Brussels regardless...which is a bit stupid becase all the trains from AMS to London literally stop in Lille but only for passenger boarding. I know it is because the juxtaposed EU/UK border at AMS centraal but still...operationally that is so easily solvable with assigning different train set / cars. Alors , rant done. I will need to drive 😞

Printing tickets and Brussels cancellations

Do they print you tickets at St Pancras if you don't have a mobile phone or printer, or does this mean you won't be able to travel due to not being able to get through the gates where people scab their boarding pass as a qr code. Elderly and know no one with a printer and miles from any print shop.

Also, I leave for Brussels on 26th May at approx 7 am from St Pancrss, and apparently according to the email I got on my desktop computer, the arrival time is 10 am is. However, above that ot says the journey time is 4.5 hours. This, even given the time difference doesn't add up. Does anyone have any idea what this may mean as I am meeting someone at Brussels station.

Many thanks in advance for anyone who can help answer either or both of these questions.

Paris to Amsterdam - disembark in Brussels instead?

So I had purchased a ticket from Paris to Amsterdam in November, but in further planning our trip we decided to spend a night in Brussels in between. But in trying to change the ticket, the end destination cannot change, and the refund fee will only leave me with five Euros.

Since the train stops in Brussels, the question is - is it as simple as just keeping the current ticket and disembarking in Brussels? I'd hope it would be that easy but not sure if there are certain cars for disembarking only, security issues, etc. If anyone has experienced this please let me know, thank you!!

Car seat (like on plane?)

Hello! When we travel on the plane with our 2 y.o. we buckle him into the car seat for extra safety, and ease of sleep. Is this possible on the Eurostar? Or a booster seat? We don’t want to do lap sitting and not sure about him sitting in a regular seat with nothing. Can’t find anything on the website about this. Thanks!

Edit: thanks for the responses. For us the car seat is not just about safety/turbulence, it is also about comfort for the child in seats not designed for them, it is easier to take a nap and to reach the table and so on. But based on this information sounds like we will go without!

How late can you be for Eurostar and how late is too late?

Hi, guys just wondering if my timing for my return back to London will be doable. I am arriving from Paris Gare Du Nord to Lille FLANDRES at 7:48.Then my Departure time for the Eurostar to London from Lille EUROPE is at 8:36. This approximately gives me 48 minutes for everything but that’s without counting the 5 or 15 minute walk (depending on how busy it is) I’ll have to do from Lille Flandres to Lille Europe. When I get there I’m not sure how long I’ll be sat with to get to the gate before it closes. This is the day after the large music festival in Paris so wondering how hectic it will be, how lenient Eurostar are in general because I know the gates close 30 minutes before departure, and how busy it is at this time in Lille and what’s the latest anyone has arrived to either Lille or for a Eurostar in general. Thanks.

Timings: 7:48 Lille Flandres
5-10 minute walk to Lille Europe
At Lille Europe 7:58 the latest
8:36 Eurostar departure

Special Meals: Eurostar Plus

Taking ES Plus from STP to Midi in a month or so time from now.

I was wondering what the special meal was like in Plus (as well as Premier, why not).

I'm a Type 2 diabetic so would be looking at a Diabetic meal or other low carb option.

Travelled Standard, Standard Premier and Business Premier in the last year and the honest verdict on whether any of it is actually worth the price gap might surprise people?

Standard is fine. Perfectly fine. You get there. Business Premier is genuinely lovely and if someone else is paying for it you will not be disappointed. Standard Premier is the interesting one. The price difference from Standard is significant. The difference in experience is real but smaller than the price suggests. The seat is better. The meal is included. The check in is faster. But at the price it sits at versus what Business Premier costs you are in a strange middle ground. What do people here think is the actual sweet spot for value.
