Beginner master's student completely lost about bibliometric research. Please be kind 🥹

Hi everyone,

I'm currently doing my master's and our university requires us to publish a paper. I've been thinking of doing a bibliometric study because it seems more feasible for me, but I'm a complete beginner and honestly have no idea where to start.

My research interests are maternal and child health, adolescent health, and public health in general. The biggest thing I'm struggling with is choosing a topic. How do people even identify a research gap for a bibliometric study? How do you know whether a topic has already been done or is still worth pursuing?

I also don't know what the complete workflow looks like. What software should I learn (VOSviewer, Bibliometrix, Scopus, etc.)? How do you go from choosing a topic to actually publishing the paper?

I've tried attending webinars, but they often feel like they're meant for people who already know the basics. The speakers move so fast that I end up feeling even more confused. At this point, I'm honestly feeling like giving up because I don't know where to begin.

If anyone has been in the same position, could you please guide me? Even a step-by-step roadmap, beginner-friendly resources, or advice on choosing a topic would mean a lot.

Thank you so much for reading. 🥹

New birdwatcher here. Please be gentle 🐦

Hi everyone!

I'm a complete beginner when it comes to birdwatching, so please be gentle with me. 🥹

I've always found birds fascinating, but I never had anyone to guide me, and now I'd really like to learn.

I live in a city, so there aren't many birdwatching spots nearby. I usually visit the few places I know, but I'm not sure how to make the most of those trips.

What tools do you use (apps, binoculars, books, websites, etc.)?

PS- I USE MERLIN BIRD APP

Also what practices helped you get better at identifying birds and learning about them? Is it possible to become a decent birdwatcher even if you mostly have access to urban parks and city birds?

I'd really appreciate any beginner tips. Thank you!

Put me on to Bhubaneswar's goated desserts 😋

Hellu, drop your absolute GOAT dessert and where to get it.

No gatekeepin

A hardcore dessert enthu, but my taste buds are biased towards chocolate 😂. Hit me with desserts that are actually worth the calories. Bonus if it's not overly sugar syrupy. 🥹

Ex-smokers of Reddit

I'm dealing with a lot of personal stuff right now, and smoking has become more of a crutch than anything else. I know it's making things worse, not better.

For those who managed to quit, what was the moment that finally made you stop? I'm hoping your stories might give me the push I need.

Which hospital in Bhubaneswar would you avoid, and why?

We recently had a disappointing experience at IGKC Hospital regarding the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY scheme for senior citizens. We were asked to purchase a significant amount of medicines and arrange other things despite being registered under the scheme. It left us quite frustrated.

I'm not trying to start a hate thread. I genuinely want to know from people in Bhubaneswar:

- Which hospital would you personally not recommend, and why?

- Was your issue related to treatment, billing, PM-JAY/Ayushman, staff behaviour, or something else?

- Which hospitals have actually handled PM-JAY patients well?

Looking for honest experiences so others can make informed decisions as well.

Public health students/researchers, how did you publish your first paper? I have no idea where to start.

I'm a public health student and completely new to research publishing. My guide is genuinely helpful, but they've been extremely busy for the past few months, so I haven't had many opportunities to ask the beginner questions that keep piling up.

I honestly don't even know the basics. How do you go from having an idea to a published paper? How do you choose a journal? How do you know if a topic is worth pursuing? What are the biggest mistakes beginners make?

I'm also hoping to publish as early as possible to build my CV. Are there certain study designs that are more beginner-friendly or generally faster to publish (systematic reviews, secondary data analysis, cross-sectional studies, short communications, etc.)? I'm even considering doing a solo publication if that's realistic for a first-timer.

I'd really appreciate any advice on:

  1. Skills I should learn first.

  2. Resources that helped you understand research writing.

  3. Common pitfalls to avoid.

  4. How you published your very first paper.

  5. Whether solo publication is a good idea for someone just starting out.

I'd love to hear your experiences, even if it's just "I wish someone had told me this when I started." 🥹

Thanks in advance!

Which desi superstition aged a little too well?

I'm not looking for ghost stories or horror stuff. I just want to know which Indian superstition you've personally seen play out enough times that you hesitate before ignoring it. Coincidence counts too.

Swimming classesssssss (for adults) in Bhubaneswar

Okay, this is slightly embarrassing but I'm almost in my 30s and I've never learned swimming once in my life. 😭

I have a genuine fear of water and want to overcome it properly, so I'm looking for beginner-friendly swimming classes for adults in Bhubaneswar with an actual trainer (not self-practice).

Also, I'm not an Odia resident, so if there are any enrollment procedures, fees, or things I should know, please help me out. Any recommendations? 🥹
