I musta missed an announcement: Anybody know why WWOZ just played 3-4 cover versions of “Ode to Billy Joe” in the past hour?

Bobbie Gentry is still alive and the song was released in July of ‘67 (I did some due diligence before asking).

The problem is not Danny’s drinking. The problem is who he becomes when he’s drinking.

Everybody on both sides of this discussion is focused on Danny’s drinking. When The Gang focuses on his drinking, led by sober LaLa, it pushes The Couple into a defensive crouch where they shrug and point around the room at everybody else who drinks. They feel attacked for something “everybody does” and ultimately brush off the criticism. If the discussion focused on who he becomes when he’s drinking, neither of them could deny the problem.

Danny shouldn’t drink. Not because he’s stashing vodka bottles behind the toilet and in the baby’s crib. Danny shouldn’t drink because he’s an asshole when he drinks. Shifting the focus to his behavior is how the base problem gets addressed, imo.

Ten minutes in and I declare that “In The City” is “The Valley, East.”

Take as many weeks as you need to agree with me.
