Accounting grad looking to learn IT — BSIT, Master’s with bridging, or certifications?
Problem/Goal:
I graduated with BS Accounting Technology in 2019 and BS Accountancy in 2020. I’m currently working in finance/accounting, but I want to seriously study IT and eventually combine the two.
I’m not planning to leave finance. I’m more interested in areas where finance and IT overlap like process automation, SQL/databases, systems, data, ERP, maybe even AI applications in finance.
The problem is I’m not sure which path would be the most practical and efficient at this point (tumatanda na ko and although naglalakas loob ako, there's also this fear na baka kinakalawang na utak ko hahaha).
Context:
I’ve been working as an outsourced accountant for around 5 years now. I’m not a CPA, but I genuinely enjoy what I do.
At the same time, IT was actually the course I wanted to take back in high school. I ended up taking Accountancy instead, and now that I’ve been working for a few years, I keep seeing situations where having proper IT knowledge would be really useful.
Sa ngayon, I am looking at several options & weighing their efficiency & practicality:
- Take BSIT as another degree and hopefully have a lot of my previous subjects credited, so I can focus mostly on the IT subjects.
- Take certifications/short courses in things like Python, SQL, data, etc. My concern is that I don’t really have a proper IT foundation yet, so I might end up learning things in pieces without understanding the bigger picture. And this may take longer years.
- Take a Master’s in IT/Information Systems, if there are schools that accept non-IT graduates through bridging subjects.
Online learning would be ideal for me because I’m from Pampanga and I’m also working full-time.
Previous Attempts:
I’ve started emailing schools and asking about crediting, bridging subjects, tuition, and online programs, but I haven’t committed to anything yet.
For someone in my situation—working in finance/accounting with 5 years of experience and aiming to move into IT-finance overlap areas, what would be the most practical and efficient path to build strong IT skills without starting completely from scratch?
